This interview took me back to my time when I was working on F86F and F86E in Pakistan Air Force and it reminds me all the happenings took place in Peshawar and Karachi Base. Tahir Alam is right about stalling of F86E engine and structural fatigue and failure on both models. I am talking about 1974 to 1979. There were lot of accidents on these aircrafts. Great to hear from Tahir Alam.

Super interview with a pilot whose modesty is lovely. Thrilled to hear more about the F-86, or any Cold War aircraft of this generation. Thanks to both of you.

Refreshing to rear a fighter pilot admitting something that went wrong was his fault. In a community know for the high egos of its members, is good to rear lessons learned the hard way. Although, by the time this gentleman was flying, fighter aircraft generally made the pilots pay with their lifes for mistakes.

magoid I suspect it’s down to the need to make judgment calls so quickly, so instinctively, that they can rarely afford self-doubt. If they make a bad call, they might not survive it. But if they take too long to make the right call, there are a lot of situations where they straight-up won’t survive that moment of indecision.

In truth I must say that you still pay for your mistakes often with your life altrough modern fighters of nowadays seems to be more reliable but the dangers are always lurking behind...

loved the interview and a perspective on how they trained in “low tech” days. I do fly rc jets and God knows i end up crashing more on the maidens that not... cannot even imagine getting in a real jet w/o instructor in the back seat ... hats off to the early day jet pilots .. you guys are amazing.

The F 86 was designed by the German Alexander Lippisch. He designed the famous rocket plane the Me 163, the fastest plane of its time capable,of doing speeds of 700 mph/hour. Just a shade below speed of sound.
@joetaylor486
@joetaylor486 3 жыл бұрын
Oh my! I did not know that. Herr Lippisch was clearly a very talented airframe designer, but the Germans in that era seemed to have an embarrassment of riches when it came to aerospace innovators and especially advocates for delta wings - The Horten brothers and Prandtl spring to mind.

Are you sure. I think it was Edgar Schmued who designed the F86, also the P51.

Excellent! A true pleasure to listen to & the questions had a very nice flow covering all phases of training & the individual a/c descriptions! I was wondering whether or not this Fighter Pilot ever dove the Sabre into supersonic flight? I ask because on one version of the RCAF Sabre it could go through the Mach in a dive. One Pilot related that he could even deploy the boards in supersonic flight with no problems. In the 1960s the RCAF used the F-86 in a similar manner as the PAF as a lead in fighter/trainer for the very hot CF-104 Starfighter. Thanks & Cheers to You Both!

Both in 65 and 71 the "PAF" comprehensively outperformed the "IAF" despite the latter owning the then formidable Mig-21, I guess the Indians truly lived up-to their moniker IAF= "Incompetent Air Force".......Kudos for the upload.

Whilst the pilot exploits from the USAF, USN, RAF, Armee de L' Air, and Aeonavale are great, it's always special to hear from the lesser-known air arms such as the Pakistan Air Force.

Pakistan has pilots which served in 4 air forces... Pakistani Ace Pilot shot down 5 indian jets in 1 minute 4 of which were under 30 seconds... due to mistake of indian jets not breaking up.. 1 broke up of 5 so he just took 4 out as they were easy target and then went after the 5th... Then we have 8 Pass Charlie (codename given by indian army) an unknown pilot who used to do bombing raids but he instead of dropping all 8 bombs at once used to do 8 passes with precise strikes.. and he used to swtich his engine off while going for the dive and start it once he had dropped the bomb... Many more pilots are there..
