Aircrew Interview

3 жыл бұрын

In part 2, former Pakistan pilot, Tahir Alam, talks us through being posted to the MiG-19 (F-6), the role of the aircraft, what the aircraft was like to fly/handle, flying in live combat against SU-7s, and much more including some great stories.
We wrap up by chatting about what he got up to after his military career and we end on a truly positive and inspiring note.
Enjoy!

The MiG-19 like its US counterpart the F-100 was a transitional design. Sandwiched between the MiG-17 and the MiG-21, it does seem to be overshadowed by those earlier and later MiG's. Looks like the Chinese and the Pakistanis got a lot more out of the design than the Soviets did.

Its not that they got so much out of the MiG-19 because it was so good, but rather because the chinese had no choice. At that time they began copying the POS MiG-19 they were cut off from further support by the Soviets. They used it as the basis for the A-5/Q-5 attack jet as well...

Mr. Alam is an excellent person to explain the material. I found his descriptions and assessments to be very balanced, clear and fair. He was 21 years old - lighting the 'burners and going for it climbing at 30,000 ft/min. - WOW. Well done sir!

Fantastic interview with a humble pilot. We started our careers at the same time (1967). I flew military/airline and corporate until I was seventy years old and enjoyed every minute. I can relate to his life as I only had one real job/pleasure the entire time. My congratulations to Tahir on his recovery from a killer disease.

I lived in PAC kamra for all my childhood till the end of my teenage years, my father worked on mirage 3 and 5 , I had personally had seen this beautiful plane many many times as there was a whole aircraft factory named after this plane, the f6 factory, I loved going to the small mountain in f6 residence colony from where all the runways were visible, my father took me to his working area many times where I saw mirages, f6, f7 f7pg, and later the beautiful jf17 thunder, I can go on and on about those beautiful days of my life. The only plane that terrified me was IL78 it is so big too damn loud. Anyway loved the interview ❤️

@markb8489 You're definitely someone and the reasons may be varied, but it's going to be impossible to explain what it's like serving your country branch or job doesn't matter, or what it's like being in war, the difference between killing in a war, a civilian that has to kill in self defense. The experience of the person in combat vs the civilian which practically none at any point in thier day say to themselves "Okay something so off the wall might happen and I'll have to fight for my life. I say this now in the hopes I don't freeze up in surprise and die." Both of their experiences can be worlds apart BUT compared to the individual that's aroused at the thought of killing someone, anyone doesn't matter. The serial killers, serial killer, wannabes, whatever I guess just murderer in general, almost see themselves as something else a predator and everything else prey whose only use is satisfying an unnatural appetite. Well, compared to

A former PAF pilot - who used to fly significantly more modern aircraft - also flew F-6 for a very short time before the aircraft's retirement. According to him if you fly this you can fly anything thereafter. What he meant was that it was very tricky aircraft to handle.

I looked at the Mig 19 at the Tuscon Davis Mohan's Museum! I retired after 40 yrs in aviation, Pilot/A&P/IA and the airframe construction was so crude and rough looking, I would not want to taxi it across the ramp much less go supersonic in it! In comparison to Western Aircraft of the same period, it was SCARY!

Indeed - back in the early 1970's Air International correspondant Pushpindar S. Chopra did a good job of covering the Indo-Pakistani conflicts of those days, but he was obviously on one (the Indian) side - and so it is good to now hear from the other side. At this distance of 45 years or so, it is good to hear.
