Took a Checkout Flight in the Czech SportCruiser at US Sport Aircraft in Addison Texas. There aren't many videos on this aircraft so I decided to take the flight and make one.
The flight went very well. The aircraft flew smoothly and was one of the easiest aircraft to fly. I will be flying it more often and taking longer cross countries with it.
My Setup: All purchases through the links below support myself and the channel. Thank you!
Cockpit Audio Recorder : amzn.to/2y1f8mq
Audio Splitting Cable : amzn.to/2y27msP

Due to this being the first time in a new aircraft, I did not setup multiple cameras. I usually have 2-3 cameras in each video. In the future I will do so. Please consider subscribing as I hope to fly and make videos often. I also volunteer regularly at an air museum and sometimes get chances to fly historic aircraft. Hopefully I can make a videos on that soon. Thanks!

This is one of the best video I ever seen, a little long but great instructions . I am training on a sports cruiser I like the way power setting, airspeeds are called out initially, but stopped after the second touch n go. I wish you would be of continued calling power settings, airspeeds etc. It helps to reenforces my memory.

Got the opportunity to fly a Sport Cruiser yesterday, for the first time. There really is an optical illusion that makes you think you are not taxing or rolling straight. Multiple times, mainly while taxing, I thought to myself “are we crabbing down the taxiway”?!? And it was there on the landings as well. I think it’s caused by the angle of the instrument panel surface and front cowling. Tough to explain but will be evident while sitting left seat. I’m also certain it will go away with a bit more time in the plane.

I agree! That was actually discussed in the video with the instructor I flew with. We were landing and as you may have noticed kept asking for more right rudder. It made me uncomfortable at first due to the feeling of not being "straight" or possibly crabbing.

Nice long video! I’m learning this plane tomorrow. I just can’t see where the ptt transmission button is, it’s like the radio detects the voice and Tx 😃. I think on my clubs version the trim is by the flaps. Pity such a nice plane has electric trim! PS oh I saw it, it’s like a trigger button on the joystick!

Enjoy it! The push to talk is on the yoke/stick. You click it with your pointer finger. It’s not going to be visible from the camera as it’s on the far side of the yoke/stick. Thanks!

No problem! It's really easy to fly and a lot of fun. Here are some links to the items I was able to find on amazon! I now have a lightspeed Zulu PFX Headset and have yet to record audio from it as the feature is built in, but these items got me started recording audio with even a cheap $90 headset. amzn.to/2y1f8mq amzn.to/2y27msP So what you will do is use the Sony recording device to record the audio. The cable allows you to take audio from the airplane going into your headset and split it into two separate cables. One is a standard 3.5mm headphone jack that can go into your iPhone or recorder. I use the sony recorder because the audio quality is great. I have not tried my iPhone though. So you may be able to save money and just get the splitter and use an iPhone to record the audio. There is an option to buy a cable that goes to your GoPro for audio recording, but that can be difficult in a cockpit with having multiple wires around while flying. Especially if you want externally mounted cameras or even ones in the rear of the aircraft.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I've been talking to Patrick about buying a new SportCruiser. I own a DA40 and prior to that a C172R. How does the SportCruiser compare to other planes you've flown? Any negatives? Thanks. Rick

The SportCruiser was a very nice aircraft to fly. The initial thing I noticed was that the input required to control the aircraft was much less than required in a Piper Cherokee/Cessna 172 model aircraft. I went for another flight after this and was able to fly using two fingers and my hand in my lap. Once the aircraft is trimmed, you don't need to touch it. If any adjustments are needed, minimal effort if any is required. Here's what I found Flying The SportCruiser. All the rotation, approach, stall, and VSpeeds were similar. Rotate was around 55 Knots, Vy about 65 knots, etc.. All that is very similar to the Cessna 172 and Piper Cherokee Models. Cruising speeds were about the same as well. Cruising around 100 knots and if you want to push it at near max throttle, you can achieve around 105-110 knots. With winds, my average ground speed my last flight was 95 knots. The engine cruises around 5,000 RPM. It has a noticeable different sound and takes a bit to get used to. Unlike a traditional cessna that has a red-line of 26-2700 RPM. Therefore you may be second thinking yourself when descending and landing as you usually set the RPM around 3400 RPM. Seems high, but you can lose some altitude and airspeed at that power setting quite easily. The aircraft can and will descend if you make it, but due to being very aerodynamic and light, if you are high on final, you either have to gain a lot of airspeed, or slip it down. I have had no issues landing so far, but in my first landing in the video you see we are a tad bit high. Therefore I pitch the nose down a little and in result gain a few knots of airspeed. We had plenty of runway and was able to bleed off enough speed, but in a short field scenario you would want to hit your target approach speed and altitude for sure before attempting to land. Of course the Ballistic Recovery System/ Parachute is very convenient to have. It's the red handle in the middle of the two seats that can be pulled in the event of emergency. The SportCruiser being a light sport aircraft definitely was and felt lighter. We taxi'd behind a light jet at one point and when they accelerated forwards we felt a wing tip wanting to lift due to the thrust from the engines. That was the only time I noticed it though. Turbulence and other winds would be expected to be more noticeable, but I never felt that it was any different from the aircraft mentioned above. That would be the only negative though. It is lighter therefore required a little more crosswind correction and rudder when in gusty/windy conditions. The avionics were great. It was simple to use, learn, and very capable. It makes flying easier and takes no skill to operate. A first time pilot or even a non-experienced passenger could operate and use the autopilot, GPS, and other Flight management systems built into the aircraft. With the curved canopy you will have a slight illusion as mentioned in the video. On final when flaring you will feel like your nose is forward, but you actually need a little more right rudder to be completely straight and therefore not side-loading the landing gear/tires. It took a bit to get used to, but by the end of the flight I had it down. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Additionally, the flaps are not "automatic". You will have to hold the switch and manually look at the indicator to determine what degree/% of flaps you are using. That could be a plus or negative for you depending on what you prefer.

Thanks so much for the great reply. I've got the G1000 in my DA40, so glass will be easy. I'm glad you mentioned the flaps because that what I was thinking the control did. I prefer "automatic", but everything can't be perfect. Patrick said I can register a new SportCruiser as an ELSA and equip it for IFR in IMC, which I will do. You can also take a 16 hour repairman course and do you own annuals on an ELSA. Now, I'm just waiting for the WX to cool down so I can fly from KABQ to KADS and fly the plane. I'm also looking at the Sting. Again, thanks a lot. Rick

Richard Sigler Sounds good! I had no idea you were able to perform your own annuals after taking a course. That will be a great time and cost saving factor in owning an aircraft.

Dan G you’ll definitely get used to it. You use differential braking when slow I found as you have no rudder authority. Once speed picks up and you have sufficient prop wash/authority on the rudder you can use less braking. It’s been a while since I own a cardinal now but they fly nicely. Very simple aircraft. You’ll have a lot of fun when you get the hang of it.

CFI didn’t do you any favors by pulling breaker on stall horn. One of the most important lessons in stalls is hearing the horn to associate that noise with an impending stall.
