What made you get the 177 over a Lightsport?
@LeftSeatAviation
@LeftSeatAviation 2 жыл бұрын
When I was looking, roughly 6 years ago now, the Cessna 177 was much more affordable than the light sports. I have flown the Czech Sportcruiser and really enjoyed the experience. I just didn’t have the budget at the time to afford an aircraft with newer avionics and airframe. I think the difference for me personally in hindsight, now that I know more, is that the light sport category of aircraft are limited. You can only have 1 passenger (2 people total including pilot), and if I remember correctly, most are not IMC certified or capable? I know the equipment can be IFR capable, but I’m not sure if they’re allowed to fly in IMC? I don’t know enough to say for sure, but my main deciding factor was 4 seats or more because I intended to fly with friends and family.

Thank you! I forget I have these posted! They’re quite old now. I just wanted to be able to go back and watch my flights in full to help see and remember what was done during them. I was in college at the time and was going back and forth from Dallas to Lubbock, Texas. Therefore I went through many different instructors as I was at different airports for the semester and then back home for summers or winter breaks!

@@LeftSeatAviation yeah, I know they are old, it's perfect for a student pilot, I like it because it's watching a STUDENT, not just an instructor or average flight. Also shows me the difference in cockpit conversations. I'll catch up on your vids soon enough and will probably put some up with even smaller view counts, my goal is more like yours is/was for why I put stuff up. It's winter in the north, I've had more weather-cancelled flights than instructed flights. Hence watching.

How do you visualize the runways on the ground as you are approaching the airport so you enter properly
@LeftSeatAviation
@LeftSeatAviation 4 жыл бұрын
Hi runways are indicated using numbers. For example Runway 36-18. This runway is the magnetic direction of 360 and 180. Just add a 0 to the end of the run way number. If you take a compass and look at the numbers on it, 360 is north, 90 east, 180 south, and 270 west. So runway 36/18 means it runs north and south. So if you are on a heading of 090 (East) you know you are approaching the runway perpendicularly. If you are approaching the airport from the north or south (360 or 180) you know you are approaching the runway head on. Now, we do have applications like ForeFlight (on an iPad) as well as the GPS in the aircraft that will show airport orientation. This is a helpful visual aid. If you are wondering why runways are labeled Runway 36/18 is because depending on the wind direction you can use the runway in either direction. So one day it may be windy from the north, so you take off into the wind northbound at a heading of 360. The other day the wind is from the south so you take off Into the wind southbound on a heading of 180. So when runways are labeled, they have two values, both of these being the exact opposite directions of each other.
@Hedgeflexlfz
@Hedgeflexlfz 4 жыл бұрын
@@LeftSeatAviation Yeah thanks for the reply. I am a student pilot and it is just hard to visualize the runways on the ground. I know they are magnetic headings but when I approach a runway I often end up entering a different direction then I expected.
@LeftSeatAviation
@LeftSeatAviation 4 жыл бұрын
Hi ah so when taxiing that’s difficult sometimes for me too. I always try to use an airport diagram. They have taxiways and are labeled. The difficult part is keeping up with your direction and which taxiway you’re on. I use foreflight and have the geo-referenced taxi charts where it shows my aircraft and it’s location on the airport. I always try to plan my full route before I start moving.
@Hedgeflexlfz
@Hedgeflexlfz 4 жыл бұрын
@@LeftSeatAviation Yeah that too. What I meant by ground was visualizing the runways as you are approaching the airport to land. You listened to the winds are know the runway to use, but it's hard to picture the runways on the ground as you after approaching the runway

Dan G you’ll definitely get used to it. You use differential braking when slow I found as you have no rudder authority. Once speed picks up and you have sufficient prop wash/authority on the rudder you can use less braking. It’s been a while since I own a cardinal now but they fly nicely. Very simple aircraft. You’ll have a lot of fun when you get the hang of it.

mj ee yeah I listen to them. I don’t think they’re the worst but everyone has a different taste in music. Also I try to find songs that are not copyrighted as it can prompt removal of videos or strikes against an account. So my options are limited so I have to use alternate versions of songs or use similar songs found in other videos I watch. What I think in this situation is that there’s too much music as all the filming was done by a passenger. I had no cockpit mounted cameras or audio. Therefore the video didn’t have much content. I don’t normally put in music if I have cockpit audio or something to show. This video though is the exception in which there is no sound aside from cabin noise.

Ethan Green it’s nice. I am able to see everything next to, and around the aircraft. With the exception of where the wings are. I like how there is no wing struts as I don’t see them when looking outside the aircraft. It’s a quick aircraft. I only notice one thing and that is from the training Cessna 172’s I have flown compared to the cardinal, it seems the space from the top of the panel to the top of the windshield is smaller. I think it’s just smaller due to the way the fuselage is shaped. I like the aircraft though so far.

How long has this airplane been in Florida? Any signs of corrosion?
@LeftSeatAviation
@LeftSeatAviation 6 жыл бұрын
I believe it spent about 6 years in Florida. It was not there it's whole life as previously it was in Wisconsin. We had it checked for corrosion and it was regularly treated during the annuals. There was one spot in the cowling that cause a stiffener to be replaced before we would buy it, and the inside was treated with Corrosion X as well as spot treated on any screws with signs of corrosion with primer. There was only one spot inside they found and corrected. It should all be written in the logbook, but I don't exactly recall all that was done. The airframe and engine are excellent from what we have been told by multiple independent mechanics. It only has 1275 Total Time Airframe and Engine. It does need a few mechanic things done as well as avionics. I just finished flying it back to Texas. I was unable to record any video with the cameras as I was trying to beat the tropical storm (Now Hurricane Gordon) and took my focus to the flight only instead of making a video. I wish I had more footage from the experience, but I will have plenty more adventures to come now that the plane has a new home. It just had a Garmin GMA 345 Audio panel installed and I love it.

I did have a fuel gauge go from Full to Empty after takeoff within 10 minutes of the first flight. It returned after 20 seconds to full again as if it never happened. It never did it again the other 8 hours. I was watching it closely as if it did, I would land immediately. Not sure what I need to have looked at in that respect, but I have a lot of mechanical things I will buy off Aircraft spruce to clean her up. It'll end up being about $1,000.
