Welcome to the first part of my African adventure, thanks to Horizon Horseback. In this first instalment we fly out to Johannesburg, before making the three hour drive to get to the Horizon Horseback Lodge. When I did a similar trip with Ant's they said the horses are allowed to graze because it signals safety to the *animals* you are watching. (Also nice for the horses but not why they do it.) With these outfits the houses live out on the reserve, the animals get to know them and if the horses are relaxed and grazing the wildlife will relax as well.

What is the breed south African Boerperd??

The history of the Boerperd is divided into two phases. A first phase took place between around 1652 and 1836, when the first horses arrived at the Cape - Barb-Arabian crosses imported from Java. Bred with Andalucian and Persian Arab horses, these animals formed the basis of a recognised breed known at the time as the Cape Horse.

Boer means farmer. Boer is an Afrikaans word for farmer. Afrikaans is another language spoken in South Africa.

Afrikaans people in South Africa are decendants from Dutch and Huguenot settlers in the 17th Century who came over to South Africa

The last time I was in Tanzania East Africa my then husband & I went in a hot air balloon journey to follow part of the wildebeest migration 😀 It was fantastic.. Enjoy you're time out there, I know you will 😊 xx
