Fly with me to check out the new runway on Catalina Island. On the way we'll fly over LAX via the Los Angeles Special Flight Rules (SFRA). On Catalina we explore one of the island's hiking trails. After that we stop over at Santa Paula airport for fuel before a beautiful sunset flight back to Whiteman Airport in Los Angeles.

Hey.. beggars can't be choosers, eh? Thanks to those Marines for taking the time to repair that runway. It was definitely ratty the last time I was there. That approach is like dropping in for a cat trap carrier landing, eh? I think I'll call you "Maverick". Nice video.

We are certainly lucky to have that destination available to us. The way it was explained to me was that expansion gaps in between sections of the runway are what cause the bumpiness. Not knowing anything about construction, I'm just curious why a brand new runway isn't smoother. The approach/departure is definitely a fun one. I feel the need....the need for speeeeeed.

Another great video. Thanks for sharing, that flight was awesome. Glad you safely eluded the buffalo. There was a farm near my high school many years ago that had buffalo, remember one night some got loose. Very strange to see a buffalo staring back at you through your car window on the road! "Is that a buffalo or should I not be driving right now?"

Love the video. I grew up 17 miles from Catalina on the beach at Portuguese Bend when United had daily service using DC3s. I would watch the takeoffs with binoculars as they fell off the hump. A neighbor was a United pilot flying the route. He was a WW2 fighter pilot and United let those pilots select their routes. Wrigley owned Catalina & had 2 ocean liners making one trip/day. The Bisons and other wild animals he brought over were for his private open zoo. You could probably get more history off Google. I was in my early teens then and have fond memories of Catalina.

Love your videos. I’m a new subscriber today. Catalina is one of our favorites. I used to take the Special Flight Rules Area but I didn’t like feeling like it was a bunch of uncontrolled traffic funneled through a tiny tunnel. So I switched to the Hollywood Park Route which puts me in positive control with ATC and gets me a lot higher over the water which reduces the amount of time we spend in a situation of not being able to reach one shore or the other in the event of an engine failure.
@Wolficorntv
@Wolficorntv 2 жыл бұрын
I hear the same concern about the LAX SFRA from others. I’ve personally never had any encounters that felt uneasy. ADSB certainly plays a big role in situational awareness there, as well as all over SoCal. That said, I should do the Hollywood route when going that direction one of these days just to change it up :)

@marcs990
@marcs990 4 жыл бұрын
Wolficorn yeah Canterbury is a nice place. Nice pubs 👍. Yeah over here we can’t get Grumman’s or any aircraft for that matter as cheap as you guys can. Yeah flying over here is a bit different. U don’t have as much Freedom as u have in the US. You Must file a Flight plan if you want to go anywhere far from your local airfield. Best to check up on procedures before u do. Most of our airspace is controlled or military. If u can think it’s a thin long country n you basically are in bravo at least always. Also almost every airfield you land at will be charged. U even need permanent over here to start up from the tower. U can’t just start n ask to Taxi. If the controllers know u r unfamiliar they are helpful though and understand that u r used to different things. Yes the flying over here is great with the scenery, it’s beautiful, the reason why I fly. I learned in the army when I asked to transfer for rotary to the army air corps. They only use rotary but the first thing u do is get in aChipmunk n do 30 hours n get your basic license n if u pass u go on to learn in Gazelle helicopters were great n then my final was the Lynx. The fastest helicopter in the world 🌍 👍. Stay safe n happy flying mate.

Awesome as always. The bit about the bison is crazy. They are "left over" from a video shoot eons ago. That's kind of amazing. Before I forget, what do you use to capture sound?
@Wolficorntv
@Wolficorntv 4 жыл бұрын
Thx man. In my research, they actually ended up cutting scenes with the bison from the film. I guess their performance wasn't believable enough. For audio I use a Zoom h5 digital audio recorder. Maybe slight overkill for airplane YT videos, but I use it for other applications too. It's great. I'm still looking for a way to simplify the recording process. As I'm sure you know, balancing operation of the cameras and audio can get a PITA.

@Wolficorntv
@Wolficorntv 3 жыл бұрын
Ha, not quite. I drilled them in as a guide for my main tires when pushing back into the hangar to prevent hangar rash. There's only a few xtra inches in the back part of the hangar between the stabilizer and the wall. The castoring nose wheel can get a little tricky on the towbar. I also put pool noodles on the stabilizers as padding just in case. It's worked out really well. No issues yet (knock on wood)
