Block Island its the best place to fly into. The runway is too short for most jets. You get a ride into town and then ride a motorbike around the Island. There are practically no fences on the Island, mostly stone walls. The food is great, the view is outstanding. We've flown the Mooney from Caldwell, N.J. to Block in under an hour. Block Island is the coolest place to go to. Others without airplanes would need to make a three-day trip at least just to enjoy. We leave in the am and we're back before dark. I've heard that the actor Christopher Walken lives there. In the winter the Island is almost empty.

Yes, the free coffee when fuelling your plane. You put $400 of gas in your tanks and you get a free coffee. I always found that funny, but always enjoyed the coffee!

Did you know the Mooney wing will take over 12 Gs and the wing will not break off? The rivets will pop and the skin will warp, but the wing will stay on. A few years ago I was at a Mooney shop down near Trenton. There was a Mooney wing standing alone verticle against the hanger wall. I asked the shop owner why the skin and rivets were all popped off. He told me a pilot was flying IFR in the soup on autopilot about 17,000 ft. when the plane iced up, stalled and went inverted into a split S. The plane self-recovered at about 10,000 and the pilot was able to land it safely. The NTSB computed the wing took a max load of 12.4 Gs during the split S. I'm sure the physician pilot passed out during the ordeal, but it is amazing the wing with its single spar stayed on and allowed the pilot to fly another day? I can't think of any other civil production airplane whose wing would have taken over 12 Gs and not have broken off. Another reason why I love Mooneys.

Great video! I learned to fly at KSWF (at AMR flight school) and KMGJ back in the early 90's. This brought back lots of memories. We used to fly up to 1B1 and have lunch at the golf course restaurant. The Hudson river valley is one beautiful place to fly. I bought my first plane (1979 Beech Sundowner) and kept it at KMGJ on the ramp! Your Mooney reminds me of a fellow MGJ pilot friend who used to keep it across from me on the ramp. He was ex-air force and used to take me with him and do aileron rolls! Such fun! We live in Cincinnati, OH now and still visit Orange County in my Piper Arrow to see friends. Really miss flying the corridor (we used to call it the "slot"), trips to Block Island, KMVY, KGON, Fishers Island, Montauk, Katama, and so many more! Subscribed and following! Keep up the great work and promotion of our passion!

Very nice flight in very nice aircraft. I'd probably leave gear down a little longer in just in case for this super long runway ;)

Michal Luczak thanks for the comment. I love this plane ✈️ Yes I could leave the gear down a little longer. But is hard to put up over 80mph. So I put it up before that. It’s also easy and fast to put back down in emergency compared to electric gear.

Matt, what model Mooney do you have? I'm in the market for an airplane, and trying to narrow down what I want. Mooney's are compelling, but I have never sat in one, and always assumed they were too small for my tall, fat self. I live down near CON, and maybe I could come check your airplane out sometime.
@aloofdork
@aloofdork 5 жыл бұрын
Hey@@soflaav8r, I have a J model. Mooney's are great for tall people. Cabin width is about the same as most other 4-seaters. The challenge is getting in and out. You pretty much have to crawl in, crawl out. Not like a car. You're welcome to come check it out. I'm based at KLEB.

Question-did you train for your PPL at Take Flight? Also are you working on getting your Instrument Rating? Has not having it limited your flying? I want to fly longer trips but concerned about weather. Obviously.
@PilotFun101
@PilotFun101 3 жыл бұрын
Hi got mu PPL through a 3rd party instructor. But Take Flight is a great school if you want to go that route. I don’t like flying in IFR weather but I am finally working on my written IFR test. It’s good to have and it does open some more options to into and out of airports. But for me flying in continuous IFR weather is something I really don’t want to do.

You retracted the gear fairly early. I always thought you should keep the gear down until their is no more usable runway left. What are your thoughts on this?
@PilotFun101
@PilotFun101 4 жыл бұрын
Dominic Bazinet I agree with you 100%. But because I have Manuel Gear (Johnson Bar) it’s much easier putting the gear up under 80mph. It gets hard to do over 80. If anything would to happen I can throw the gear down within a second.

At 5:55 with a carburated Mooney with a constant speed prop do we look for a manifold pressure drop or an rpm drop when suspecting carb ice during cruise? Just wondering.
@PilotFun101
@PilotFun101 4 жыл бұрын
It will be a RPM Drop not a manifold pressure drop.
@daffidavit
@daffidavit 4 жыл бұрын
@@PilotFun101 with a constant speed propeller at cruise speed, assuming you reduced your MP by one inch, wouldn't the rpm's stay at what you had previously set them at cruise speed? I'm sorry, I'm confused. I always thought that at cruise speed if you set your MP for example at 24 inches and your rpm's at 2,400 rpm's and you suddenly reduced your MP from 24 to 23 inches, the RPMs would compensate and stay at the previous setting at 2400 RPMs. So if you get Carb ice and the MP goes down by one inch, the rpm's will still stay at 2,400 rpm. So don't you look for a drop in MP rather than rpm's at cruise with a constant speed prop? So sorry for my ignorance. I'm trying to learn something here.
@PilotFun101
@PilotFun101 4 жыл бұрын
@@daffidavit I am sorry. I should have read your question better.. Your right.. Both would go down. When losing performance you will drop on both. So your correct. Sorry about that.
@daffidavit
@daffidavit 4 жыл бұрын
@@PilotFun101 Well, thank you. But if its a small amount of ice, only the MP will drop slightly. That is the insidious part of the problem. It could be ice or it could be that the throttle crept back a little bit. That's why I agree with you to do a carb heat check every 15 min. or so. The RPM's will stay the same if the MP drop is slight. However, if it's a massive carburetor infection both will drop. I'm glad we both learned something. Maybe others in your audience will also learn something important. After all, we are all here to help each other. Check this out, God bless and Blue skies to all or your subscribers. www.flightlearnings.com/2010/03/02/carburetor-icing/

For private pilot training, this is not the best aircraft. It's a "complex" aircraft because of the retractable landing gear and constant speed propeller. Also, I doubt you'll find a Mooney for rental/training and if you do, the cost will be prohibitive. Not the best aircraft to do initial training on. But once you have your license and maybe at least 100 hours of flight experience, it's a fun (and fast) aircraft to fly.

Hey, I don't really like that you switch views to outside on takeoff. People who watch aviation videos like to see the instruments, especially during important phases of flight. Also don't like that you add the insert outside view. It's distracting plus I don't think you need it since the view from inside your plane is already excellent. However, I realise some of your viewers might actually like it. I think you should do one of those KZfaq polls to get an answer. Reason being, I actually avoid watching your videos many times because of the view changes whereas I would always watch them if they weren't included. I find your inside camera placement to be excellent plus you have analogue gauges so I can easily read them. All I'm saying is that the view changes could be negatively affecting your views. Happy flying and filming man.
