This video is about KINGSFORD PROFESSIONAL VS B&B Briquets in a head to head shootout to see which is the better charcoal for SCA Steak Cooking.
Keep in mind, that while ANY charcoal is good for cooking on, I am trying to show that different charcoals perform differently.
In SCA Steak Cooking many of us use Grill Grates. We do this to put grill marks on the steak. So in effect the Grill Grates are our heat source. The charcoal is the means to an ends by getting the grates hot enough to "Weld" good marks on our steak. And the hotter you get the grates, the better your marks are.
Also, I want repeatable results. I am looking for "Drop", and overall time and temperatures.
The drop is what happens when the charcoal compacts. The more the charcoal compacts, the further your coals are from your grates, and therefore less heat on your cooking surface.
In this video I used;
B&B Charcoal Briquetes
Kingsford Professional Briquettes
PK Classic Grill
2 Weber Charcoal Chimneys
4 Weber Starter Cubes
1 Set of 16" welding gloves
1 Fire Extinguisher
As always, when working around this type of heat source, use caution, safety and plan what you are doing before you do it.
I am shooting this video so you don't have to. So please, don't try this at home.

TY for this video. I just purchased 3 bags of B&B which for me is not an instant gratification purchase. I live in Maryland and purchased them through ACE, the Hardware Place, hardware store. I ordered them on line and had the bags delivered to the store. My main reason for purchasing B&B is to achieve longer burn times for pork butts and briskets on the WSM. My next steak cook will be B&B in the Weber kettle using grill grates. I am coming from Kingsford professional charcoal so the video was timely for me.

This is the 2nd video of yours I’ve watched and subscribed. I have a gas grill, but I use charcoal when I go camping and cook with my Dutch Oven. Your videos are very informative. I use regular Kingsford, but might have to look into B&B. I might be able to use less charcoal and get the same amount of heat. Would you be up for doing a video on charcoal use for Dutch Ovens? Maybe use B&B, Kingsford, Generic store brand, Lump, etc?

BTW I can’t remember the last time I made burgers and hot dogs, lol. Here’s the thing: when I go to Lowe’s, or Home Depot, there’s a couple of pallets of 2*20 lb Kingsford about 15% off. They push it and I don’t have to go all the way over there to get the B&B. Now I have six bags of Kingsford white bag and thats gonna last a while. No parties with the corona going around. So sad.

Kingsford is always on huge sales for the holidays and it’s because it’s full of fillers like you said. That makes it cheaper to produce and there is less to fill the grill. While it works, it’s not good when you have a large grate to cover with charcoal. Great video. Subbed...

Meanwhile, I see 5,000 bags of Kingsford blue, even at the grocery store. I’ll comment on my first use of B&B later. First I’d like to comment on availability or lack thereof. Viewed this video on Sept 10th, visited my local ACE on Sept 12th, (out of stock but we’ll be glad to order it for you). One week later “sorry it wasn’t on the truck, please wait one more week “. Visited store on Sept 25th, “sorry only part of your order has arrived “ I requested a refund on the rest of the order. Confused, I contacted ACE’s customer service. “None in warehouses & we don’t expect restocking prior to next week. As to how a store accepts payment for an item they know is not available, allows the customer to wait two weeks ;& then requires them to return to the store for a refund is beyond me. I had to drive by Lowes, Home Depot & Walmart to reach ACE. Kingsford is available at these stores 365. I have contacted B&B directly as ACE is useless. The positive side is maybe so many people saw your video, there was a nationwide run on the product. Keep up the good work.

This was a great video! I was really impressed with the B&B charcoal. I usually use lump to grill but I think I might switch it up and try B&B. I agree with you about Kingsford which is why I only use it when I smoke. It's cheap and last longer than store brand charcoal. Thank you for sharing this it was super informative!

@@FLYINGSMOKE Thanks, as a retired aircraft tech, I happen to have ss wire. I didn't catch it in the video so I was thinking you had a custom cut to fit your PK from Grill Grates. The only think I have with using the grate that came with the grill is if I want to grill something that doesn't require the use of the Grill Grates, i'd have to take the wire off to use the grate. Only solution to that is to buy a spare PK grate AND if I want to use the GG's as a flat top (opposite side) for smash burgers you run into another issue if wired down. I'll figure something out. Thanks for the fast reply and keep cookin'!

Agreed. Something changed recently at Kingsford. i quit using them for these reasons: high redisual ash after suggests more filler/binder. Weighed them, each briquetter is 10-20% smaller than the old ones. Convoluted surface = faster burn. As your demo show, they don’t last. So, all my charcoal estimated times and quantities for Kingford, which I used exclusively, went out the window. I speculate they are now run by accountants, not barbequers. I ise a different brand now, cheaper, better.

@@FLYINGSMOKE observing the “What” usually leads toasking the”Why”. I send them emails with my findings and the rely was a deflection. Why would a pk grill be better than a weber kettle? Just curious
@FLYINGSMOKE
@FLYINGSMOKE 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you are using it for. You can get a kettle cheap, but the PK is a steak cooking machine. And since it’s aluminum it stands up to the elements
@odom2142
@odom2142 4 жыл бұрын
Each has its pros and cons. I prefer a Kettle overall, but the PK is more portable than the Weber, and the aluminum on the PK is going to hold up better than the Weber. Then again the Weber’s main shell isn’t the issue... The parts that eventually rust can be cheaply and easily replaced. But the Weber Premium has a better ash-collection system, more easily-adjustable bottom vents, and has more accessories available than the PK, which is why I use one. Not to mention the Weber is half the price of a PK. Happy cooking
