Been riding since 1970, building since '74 and constructed my first bobber last year from a rotted out '98 Sporty 1200C that sat in the sun and salt of Key West unloved for years. Used a Lowbrow Customs hardtail kit and most of the stock parts and found what I had been missing since my '76 FX Super Glide. I was sitting in the bike not on it, with mid controls and drag bars the sitting position is forward but it stretches your back out and takes the pressure off the lower portion. I love my rigid, fast with a 27T 883 trans belt sprocket and light enough that when I go South for the winter I can drop it into the back of my truck by myself at 65 and enjoy riding in the sun instead of shoveling my driveway. I might build an EVO bobber eventually but that Sporty will be with me for good.

I preferred a rigid back in the 70"s, especially when I was loaded on opiates. After colliding with a station wagon my back couldn't take the abuse, been riding suspension ever since.

Riding a Harley is about doing what you want.. Harleys aren't always fastest ,most reliable, least expensive, but if ya ride a Harley you want to be different than the next Harley rider with drink cup holder ,bagger,flashy lights,air bag suspension and still only ride to bike night or park at HD dealership to talk shop, Starbucks Ride a rigid frame Springer front and pull your tools out and wrench! Learn about your bike and ride.. big twin or sporty. I happen to have big twin bagger and sporty, I never look down on the next guy well except those that think they are better than you because there bank account is bigger. Let the next guy do what he do, not be a sheep!!

ALHD 48 I think no matter what style bike you ride there's always going to be somebody getting shitty on it. I personally like sportsters and have owned a few, but the older I get the more I can't help look at them and see them as beginner bikes. newbies are always going to get teased a little bit. I just think it's part of the natural course of paying your dues. ride a Sportster for a little bit and eventually you see its limitations and you move on to something else. (usually) something a little more line with a seasoned rider. there's always exceptions to the rules but that's what I see. younger kids ride sportsters most often than not

They are fantastic and have been since 57 ,but they are what they are ,solid asphalt, single up, Sport bikes,,great solo "bar hoppers",they are not baggers not long distance cruisers.I've seen guys do amazing things with them,from racing to chopping to bobbing,stock to strokers.but they are what they are .I wish I still my old one that I had for twenty years.Ain't nobody laughing at 'em.

That's very nice. I've been wanting to get a different rear end for my Sportster. I wanted to go with the fat rim/low profile tire. Where can I find one and what should I look for? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks man.

How did he move the gas tank back? What is the space between the fork and the gas tank called?

I don't know what to call that space between the tank and forks, but the tube the tank is mounted on is called the backbone. The gas tank is a Lowbrow Customs frisco sportster tank. Its designed to be mounted as far back or forward as you want on the backbone.

Makes a big difference what roads are you gonna ride on when comparing a rigid to a bike with suspension. You hit a pothole with a rigid and you’re over 25 years old it’s going to hurt. LOL

Aside from just learning to ride and giving us advice on the diff between hardtails and suspended frames,,this kid nailed it as far as this build,,the bike has perfect lines and seems to fit his size with the mids...the frisco tank, bars and stance are bitchen. I say great job young man.

Im 5'8" but I have seen guys over 6' ride sportsters. It all depends on how you set up your bike.

Im 6"2 with a custom built sporty with forward controls and i still feel like i'm too big for the bike. Ended up selling it although i loved the work i put into it

It started life as a Haifley Bros sportster sissy bar. We cut it up then added rings, and a taillight license plate holder. Might work with an old FX or soft tail harley but the lower seating position and stretched wheel base makes the difference, you end up sitting in the bike.
