It's definitely still alive amongst the younger guys. I myself am working on a Yamaha xs650 bobber at 25 and my buddy is building his first at 22. I built a scrabble earlier from a Honda cb750. My goal is to get up to building either a old shovel head or a complete custom big bore like this.

I rode a bike so similar to that for 5 yrs. everything broke eventually and once it was all fixed, it would start breaking all over again. It taught me so much about how to survive on a bike that would try to kill you every other week. I had the clutch cable snap once and shot me across 4 lanes of traffic. No front brake of course. Finally the frame cracked at the tree at 40 mph and I skidded to a stop holding on to just the front end. That was the day My bike and my underwear died. I still miss that bike lots. It could take any amount of water off the road and strategically place every drop down the crack of my ass. Now I’m on a slim with suspension and brakes, nice but not nearly as exciting. Great review. Brought back good memories.

Rode that bike for almost 10 years all over California, Nevada and Arizona. Eventually I sold it to my younger brother and bought a brand new FXDX. My body with all its injuries needed something with a suspension. Anyways great video!!! Thanks for sharing and your right. A long long time ago when i was nineteen, I rode a ‘47 knuckle rigid frame. No front brake, suicide clutch, slap stick shifter next to my left thigh, rear brake pedal return spring missing, front end raked out so far that if you let go of the bars at slow speed, the front wheel wanted to flop to one side or the other. I had to leave a baking pan under it when parked in my girlfriend’s garage so that the oil that leaked out of it wouldn’t stain the floor. If you knew the right procedure it would start on the first or second kick. It was so cool. I look back now and think how lucky I was to survive riding it. I also know that when you’re nineteen you can ride a rigid and it’s cool but at this stage of life, I’ll pass.

Never really "fell in love" with any of my bikes .. although I did have a GSX250 back in the 80's that I was quite enamoured with as it was just "that good" but did have a 250X7 that tried its best to kill me on several occasions. I SWEAR to this day that bike was possessed by something downright evil I considered having it exorcised on more than one occasion. My younger brother PESTERED me to sell it to him for months so in the end I gave in and let him have it for a good price three weeks later a guy did a "U turn in his path as he was coming through at WARP and he buried it straight into the side of the car. He went partially through the windshield with his right arm ripping his wrist apart and severing the artery then was ripped back out and thrown with momentum over the bonnet and on up the road like a rag doll coming to rest with multiple broken bones and claret everywhere. His mate on the back of the bike hit the back of his helmet with his testicles on the way over him as he was thrown into the air and burst one of them as it impacted he also landed in a big mess. When I initially bought that bike it was written off with a bent front end and smashed front wheel and as such I got it cheap but that was the third time it had been in a bad smash in the hands of the same owner. He re framed it and rebuilt it with new forks and front wheels handlebars tank etc. The last time it happened some dumb blonde reversed out of her drive as he came barreling around the corner he had no chance of stopping and went straight into the back and was thrown over the car sustaining a broken arm/wrist two fingers and a broken leg in three places ... she got out of the car and screamed at him "Look what you've done to my car (facepalm). I rebuilt the bike with yet another new frame/forks front wheel headlight indicators front mudguard and tank from a donor I picked up real cheap and that bike tried its VERY best to wipe me out on SEVERAL occasions how the hell I got out of some of them I'll never know but there you have it, some bikes have a soul and personality all of their own this one was Evil incarnate somewhere along the way it picked something up that shoulda stayed dead and buried ... true story.

you have to be able before you build/ride one of these "choppers". which is why it this way because who ever built it did so for his self, the only add on that most won't have is the electric starter put a kick starter on it and it'd be complete and true to it's form. you'll also need a good back to ride a hardtail frame like this. nice bike and good review that was also truthful .

I dig it. Reminds me of an interview with the forever lovely Ann Margret about 20 years ago... "Not a question of if you fall but when". ok, she'd crashed, recovered and rode again. Every bike can kill you. why my 'mom' never let me buy one ;)

Number 3 , Respect , from any guy that knows , and I mean that's all the guys that actually know that 99% of guys just can't cut it on a bike like that , in my day I rode tank shift anything , with suicide trike clutch not even the easy rocking clutch on stock tank shifters , the beauty was 99% of guys knew there's no way they could even leave the driveway without stalling and being laughed at , so you just got that bit of Respect as a real biker , cheers big ears

I would say about the clutch, its so massive that it had to be because of the compression of that huge engine , it had to be heavy. It had to be huge. The specs of the engine requires it to be like that. It AINT for sissies. Its a Mans Bike! A REAL MANS BIKE!!!

Great video and I love the bike, the guy who bought it is a great guy too, I can`nt imagine doing a 4 hr stint on that thing its gotta be a back killer? well after 4hrs maybe.... yeah theres a few things you could do but thats personal choice , there a few nice ideas on the bike, I like the gauge position and the starter , personally I like classic flames I`d have the tank done old skool. keep em coming this stuff is the real thing for me , stick the fake t.v where the sun don`t shine. Great channel I was happy to find it.

I had a 1991 FXSTC open BDL it’s not that stiff. Cable is dry or routed wrong. Finally fished the 91 and gave it to my dad. He doesn’t ride long distances anymore, so it fits his style. It’s in my videos if you want to check it out.

Very nice looking and i like the doorknob starter button, that's a unique quirk done by the builder but it's not rare to see odd starting systems on customs. The clutch is iffy but i'm sure it's not that bad and can be fixed. What are you talking about not getting the bike to run reliably? The carb is probably shot/tuned badly if that's the case.. Nothing major since the engine sounds fine. Just because it's custom, doesn't mean it's unreliable and uncomfortable. It was just made by someone, for themselves and to their taste. All bikes deserve respect and love.
