The antennas with the lump in them are sleeved dipoles and yes, they have a slightly higher gain than a simple 1/4 wave whip but more importantly, they have a more even radiation pattern so there are fewer null points and thus the range will be more consistent with varying orientation.
@iforce2d
@iforce2d 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting - the idea of signal varying with orientation always bugs me when I'm flying far away like this.

Interesting stuff, I too tested four alternative antenna types with this receiver, mainly in an attempt to get the antennas outside my plane fuse, those stock originals being very short. In the results at 300m range set across my property clear run, I got a base line reading of -74db using the originals, however I got nothing better than -78 with all others, including gp monopoles, 33mm element 130mm wire monopoles, frsky tx antennas and a long set of gp monopoles (180mm). The worst reading being with these at -86db. I then tried trimming the 130mm wire dipoles to exactly 23mm element length, but could only get -79db, I then cut the total length to match the flysky originals with 33mm element and got 81db, trimming back to 23 still couldn't match originals at -75db despite now looking identical. I then repeated all the tests to confirm everything, I used a jig at each end to replicate exact positioning. Here's the witchcraft bit, i also tested an alternative course through trees but with two types only, the originals and the 130mm wire dipoles @33mm element, and the originals were now worse than the 33mm ones by 4db at 100 metres through 12 fully grown, full foliage birch trees in a row... very strange, it was this that made me repeat all the tests, but just inexplicable. Anyway, whatever magic they are using to get such amazing performance from what appear to be incorrectly tuned antennas (except for tree penetration) is anybodies guess, just don't try to make your own replacements :( Apologies for the rant, but as always you presented another great video and with interesting results.

bulky bit on the antenna is a 1/4 wave sleeve balun, used because coaxial cable is unbalanced but the antenna is balanced; the choke stops the shield of the coax radiating.

External smd attenuators are great for range testing when there is no option for lowering power, assuming you have a transmitter that has an external antenna socket in the first place. Inconclusive test is also a good test. I think 2.3km is enough for most typical uses, especially in countries that require line of site.

antenna theory is verging on the mystical... the dipole ones usually have less than the quarter wavelength 31.25mm because of the speed of light travelling down the wire....... i stopped listening there and wished i hadn't asked..., the 23mm made me worry it was supposed to be dipole but didnt get the little bullet casing part put on... the 33mm threw out all previous theories because its too long.... and remember, you do the walk of shame, so we don't have to.

thank you for all vids. Sure, you are right with antenna. The better is the strongest one. It's called in French: "Antenne a jupe". I just tested one of them with a vector analyser. It match perfect at 2.4GHz return loss is about -20dB witch is perfect. These kind of antenna doesn't require groud plane. it's is not the same for a quater wave antenna, to have a good return loss, they need ground plane. And... there is no ground plane at the end of a coaxial cable ! So I'm sure that these antenna are... BAD ! regards

@iforce2d
@iforce2d 4 жыл бұрын
The receiver will usually have either a button on it (press it while powering up to enter bind mode) or a pin that should be connected to ground (same thing, have it connected to ground while powering up). Then on the radio there will either be a binding feature in the menu somewhere, or for this FlySky radio you hold the bind button while turning it on - remember to select the model you want to bind for first.

Love this video. I used to make prototypes for 12GHz things and I am skeptical about the cavity enclosure they put up on the x6b, and I worry if that only adds weight for my 2 once craft. The cavity seems to be suitable for 5GHz things.
@iforce2d
@iforce2d 7 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by cavity enclosure, the metal can around part of the board?
@johncgibson4720
@johncgibson4720 7 жыл бұрын
Yes. The can around. Usually civilian applications don't need that, unless, for that dimension/size, it is 5+Ghz and there are some cavity resonator as part of the enclosure.
@iforce2d
@iforce2d 7 жыл бұрын
I don't quite get why you're calling it a resonator. Isn't it just a little faraday cage/emi shield? Many 2.4g receivers and radios have it.
@johncgibson4720
@johncgibson4720 7 жыл бұрын
The cage is not absolutely critical if it is just there as a shield. But, if you have a cavity resonator in the 12Ghz application, the cage becomes absolutely necessary. 5+GHz can't use quartz for resonator. That is why big CPUs don't go over 5+GHz. Instead they go for multi core.
@johncgibson4720
@johncgibson4720 7 жыл бұрын
When the frequency gets really high, electronics become cages, mirrors, prisms. At 2.4G, electronics should be capacitors, inductors, circuits, etc.

The 23mm should be correct length for the 2.4 band, if you vary from that it can go wonky. My guess is it one were to trim 33mm lengths to 23mm you would have better results. It all has to do with wavelength.

That at my level is beyond me :-). One usually finds the best results at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or full wave. I do believe 3/8 wave will work too, not sure on that though.

I think the optimal length for the exposed part of the wire is 31mm for 2.4ghz. I also have been wondering why the FlySky receivers have varying lengths shorter than 31mm. The lengths are not consistent. On all my FrSky receivers the lengths are very consistent and in the range of 31mm so I'm not sure what's going on...

Hi, I have a question that you may or may not be able to answer. I bought the KingKong 210gt and it came with a FlySky i6 and the ia6 receiver. I want to upgrade it to get better range. I don't know if I should get the ia6b or the new x6b. I've heard i.bus and s.bus are better connections than the pwm that comes setup already, but I am not sure if I can use i.bus. The FC is the KingKong f3 micro one. hobbyking.com/en_us/micro-f3.html and the manual says it supports s.bus. Does that mean it should also support i.bus? Thanks for any help you have.
@iforce2d
@iforce2d 7 жыл бұрын
If you're running a recent version of cleanflight or betaflight it will support ibus. That's a firmware thing. I don't really have time to do research on FCs that I don't own myself, but usually a serial connection will use receiver pins 3 and 4, so if you have those available on that FC you should be good.

Thanks ! "In other words, at a specified data rate, a receiver with a −98 dBm sensitivity can hear signals that are half the power of those heard by a receiver with a −95 dBm receiver sensitivity." So on paper, ia6b wins by a laaarge margin. I'm wondering what kind of range I can get from my devo 7e with 7105 module. Probably less than the flysky TX wich has 2 antennas. . . Love the frame btw !
@amax2624
@amax2624 7 жыл бұрын
Two antennas dont give you more output but they can be used for better polarization or for splitting the telemetry data apart. One for transmitting and one for reception. But then, they should not have different orientation. For the Devo. The range might be the same under the condition, you use a well made swivel antenna and pay much antention on the polarization of the antennas. A little loss will be there due the screw connection though. The A7105 is capable of a 100mW output as well. If you are using the AFHDS A2 protocol on the Devo, there is no downside.

Have you tired the x6b on true dipoles like the ia6b comes with? In a foam board plane I'm building at the moment and I'm going to be trying out the x6b with the true dipoles that are fitted Inside the i6 and i10 transmitters, both my transmitters have been converted to sma sockets so have the stock internal antennas kicking about. Only ever flown on the ia6b till now so interested to see what range I get from the configuration I'm going to be using. I dont know if it's an error on the paper specs or not but the x6b appears to have a lower sensitivity than the ia6b.

I think you'd get better performance with true dipoles, not really an expert though. I don't have any to try. Oh wait... "like the ia6b comes with" I think those are called sleeve monopole. I have not tried them with the x6b but I suppose it would become essentially the same thing as the ia6b.
@stevefox3763
@stevefox3763 5 жыл бұрын
@@iforce2d technically the Sleeve antenna is a end fed dipole, the metal sleeve is acting as the opposing radiating element. I'll have this build airborne soon buy my overall distance results won't apply to others other than if the x6b manages more range than the ia6b as I'm running amps on both tx antenna lines and already get considerably more range than others on a stock setup.

Way too vague. You mean your fingers keep slipping when you try to push the plug in? :) Look at this question from my perspective, it is impossible to answer. There is a LOT of information out there on this, try reading the docs for whatever flight controller you are using.

Thanks for doing the flight range tests. 16:44 doesn't the I6X TX have a range test switch to attenuate the output signal for ground range walk testing ?? If it does... you could test the 2 RX to max ground range.

I think that's what was concluded. I think the old school ia6b is also better for rc fixed wing airplane flying. but if that's not the case , tell me which one i need for rc fixed wing airplane flying?

Seriously Pro Racing F3 OSD? If the flight controller has an OSD onboard, you will be able to use betaflight/inav to set it up pretty easily. I don't think it does though...

That's probably the PDB OSD, but the F3 itself does not have an OSD. How easy is the OSD PDB to setup?

faced with the same problem with i6b. By default, ia6b receiver keeps sending the flight controller "last good reading" when signal is lost. This behavior can be re-defined in "RX Settings" menu on transmitter itself. You can set desired readings for all channels which receiver will produce in case of lost signal. Check on the internet, there is plenty of articles describing this solution in details.

I know, was just thinking about the props when I saw you didn't make it back with the last flight due to the battery. Doesn't matter, just an observation.

Hi, first of all, thanks for nicely done and very informative video. It's nice to see a high quality material among all the underage morons shouting out their opinions on the internet. Yours - a pleasure to watch. But to the point - I'm very new to all this drone fun, just planning to build my first one. I want to create something small, but full of features. So it will be mini quad frame, but it's going to be more of a fun-testing-ground machine than a racer. Oh, and unfortunately ona budget too. I've been thinking about FS-I6X transmitter, but most of them are sold by chinese with x6b receiver. Will I be able to send telemetry back to the receiver with x6b, or do I need ia6b? Actually I like ia6b form factor more, the case seem to be more study than a naked pcb. You seem to be pretty proficient with all these drone stuff, would you mind being nagged by a newbie a little bit? I'm struggling with existential dilemmas choosing parts... .) Maybe you could advise: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2809492-PDB-LC-filter-or-not
