Im for sure being a pilot , I love planes and I’ve always wanted to be a pilot , the biggest problem for me could be “not being with my family” but in my case...Im completely alone in this world , so there is no problem for me😃

I’m currently in school with debt for something I don’t even want, never took my dream of being a pilot seriously bc others told me it’s too hard and not worth it, now I regret going to college and not pursuing this. I’m only 19 and am GOING to be an airplane pilot, it’s gonna take much longer than it should for me though, PLEASE take your time on making life decisions and don’t take everyone’s advice, follow your dreams and work hard.

I have started with no money in high school, when I was just 16. Working double time each holidays and school trips and it made me become an airline pilot with age of 21 for one national airline in Europe :D Long story to fit it in one comment, but whatever is your position, just find your way. It may be long and windy as well, but the key is to not give up on your dreams. Good luck!

The minimum rest period is most defenitely happening very often, on a weekly basis on many rosters. Allowing for a max of 1 hr traveling time from the airport the available period is already down to 8 hrs, taking winding down time and preparing to go to rest will wipe another hr. Waking up the next morning will wipe at least another 30 min. Realistically you will during minimum rest never get more than 6 hrs sleep. This often manifest on my roster for up to 3 days in a row

Started flight training in the 90s, and flew out of a small international airport during training. Realized the first year that it wasn’t for me. Mainly because I like being home and around my family. Loved flying, but made the long term change and went into engineering. As much as I loved flying, no regrets

Garrett, you are sooo right about flying, it is the best career and the young people today have the best chance in the world of making that happen for themselves. I was not so fortunate as I try to rationalize why I didn't push harder to have an airline career as a pilot. Oh I've been with a major airline for close to 50 years now and probably, as you point out in Ep.13, I should have put more of other things aside and concentrated on my flying. I got my private in '73, then instrument, commercial, multi-eng, by '81 ... It's easier for me to rationalize other events that put my flying career on hold, wife, children, then in '80s I went to commuters, (as you know where all pilots built their hours), like Air Wisconsin, Great Lakes Aviation, etc... only to be told that they raised their requirements to (get this) higher than the majors. As I was told they were tired of losing their pilots after 1 year. then of course Eastern Airlines folded putting God knows how many pilots in line up and then Braniff Airlines folded... i couldn't get a break... I love flying and now am working on my soaring addition..I have always been healthy as you point out. I have been around airplanes my whole life and given a choice right now there is nothing I wouldn't do even for the right seat. Like i said earlier the young kids today have the best chance in EVER to be a pilot.. There is such a shortage that many of the Major Airlines are paying for your training above private... United even has commercials about being an Airline pilot.. Anyway love your episodes and will continue to be a fan

I wanted to be a pilot when I was in high school, especially a fighter jet. But They told me I don't have 20/20 so I couldn't. Gave up on it. and a few years ago, I just had the chance to do the eye test for free. I was told I have slightly better vision than 20/20. My girlfriend (now fiancee) says it's now or never, why not give it a try? The weather is unpredictable now, but I have my first flight class this month.

I'd like to know how you find so much time to workout. Your job overwhelms personal time. If it's not the days away from home, it's the toll jetlag takes on the body.

As a truck driver. The only real difference is my medical cert is every 2 yrs as compared to 6-12 months. The family time away for me is 6 weeks away then 4-5 days home. Our work schedule is DOT regulated. I would love to be a pilot!

I take medication and i was told that i have to get off it in order to get a medical for private pilot license. Fortunately i can still fly as long as i am with instructor but cannot under no circumstances fly alone.

Like you said I would imagine being away from your family is one of the hardest things about being a pilot. but saying that soldiers have things much worse, they may not see the families for years at a time. I

Im just starting out and honestly the medical kind of terrifies me. I feel like I finally found my passion in aviation but I do have a couple questionable things in my medical history, namely I had a super minor seizure many many years ago (isolated event thankfully, was literally discharged from the hospital an hour later) AND I was medicated for adhd a while back. Fingers crossed It'll be okay. Ive read stories of people passing with much worse than just this but Ive also heard of people failing it for less.

Nothing can stop me from becoming a pilot. I was meant to do this. It’s pretty expensive and I can’t afford it rn but I WILL do it. 😤

The point you made about losing your medical if something uncontrollable happens is really scary to think about! Would you recommend getting a degree in something unrelated to aviation just for a plan B in case something like that happens? if that makes sense?

I'm starting at a danish flight school this august. It's a intergrated course which takes around 20 month to complete with the cpl atpl and mcc. Believe it or not the record down there is 11 months and 22 days for the whole course.

Just a YSK on the sleep schedule portion, melatonin IS approved by the faa. And more importantly does NOT make you groggy in the morning. This is a very common placebo effect/misunderstanding with melatonin, its just a dietary supplement. Its a natural hormone your body produces when it wants you to sleep anyway. After taking it, the supplement wears off within 1-2 hours, leaving 0 after effects the morning after. The groggy feeling is either a placebo from you being told it will make you groggy the morning after, or more commonly, its because people usually take melatonin AFTER trying to sleep and not being able to, so by the time they take it, it's already late and they wont get as much sleep as they need to (i.e. less than 8 hours, usually 6 or less), and they will wake up groggy due to the lack of sleep, but attribute it to the melatonin. As an addon, caffeine has FAR more negative side effects than melatonin. If you are actually trying to perform to the best of your abilities in an aircraft, ESPECIALLY for the HOURS that an airline flight is, you should stop all intake of caffeine, and try getting more sleep. If you think you NEED caffeine at this point, that is even more of a reason to quit, caffeine isn't chemically addictive, but is highly behaviorally addictive, and NEEDING it, is a major sign of addiction, no one should NEED caffeine to wake up and function in the morning. If you have trouble getting up and alert in the morning without caffeine, and after your withdrawals are over (which yes, caffeine withdrawals are absolutely a thing, that should be telling in and of itself), you should increase your water intake (although nearly EVERYONE needs to increase water intake. 75% of ALL Americans are chronically dehydrated!!), drinking more water, ALLOT more, will wake you up, make you more alert, and energize you, not to mention will make you far healthier in general. Drinking more water, in general, is the single thing ANYONE can do to make themselves healthier, and ESPECIALLY if you drink coffee, as its a diuretic so will make you MORE dehydrated, if you drink coffee, you should be drinking WAY more water. A general rule I go by is for every cup of coffee, 4 cups of water, 1/4 ratio coffee to water. If you actually try this you'll notice you have to pee a TON, this is actually NORMAL, people are so dehydrated they think you only have to pee once or twice a day. A properly hydrated person will urinate 6-7 times a day or more, the reason you pee so little is because you are DEHYDRATED! TL;DR Melatonin is fine (and actually looks promising as a preventative measure against Alzheimer's), coffee is NOT fine, and you ALL should drink A LOT more water!

Lift Academy (I don't know if they're a scam or not) claims you can be working as an airline pilot in as little as 12-18 months. Has something changed with requirements?

health part is huge for me, I'm getting ready to start flight school but a personal goal I set for myself was getting my shit together and losing the extra weight first. The way I see it if I cant take care of myself how can someone expect me to take care of a beautiful machine.

I’ve only been interested in being a pilot recently from playing flight simulator. My uncle is a pilot. I was always scared of heights but now that I’m over that it seems very interesting and cool to do, I might ask my uncle what it took him to get where he is now and then try to follow that path

College was not for me, my parents tried to push me to become an electrician or welder once I got out of high school, I signed up for clases but I never went because it’s not what I wanted to do. I’m now 21 and have enrolled to my local community college for aviation
