(ASSOCIATED PRESS) A grand jury has issued a criminal indictment for former Uvalde schools police chief Pete Arredondo and UCISD PD Officer Adrian Gonzales.
The grand jury indictment is part of the broader investigation into who should be held responsible for law enforcement inaction during the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
RELATED: In Uvalde, signs of mourning, healing, frustration and solidarity two years after the Robb shooting
The indictment of Arredondo, unsealed on Friday, charges him with 10 counts of Endangering/Abandoning a Child. Meanwhile, Gonzales faces 29 counts of Endangering/Abandoning a Child, saying that he "failed to engage, distract and delay the shooter," according to his indictment.
Texas law says that a person is guilty of Abandonment or Endangerment of a Child if they intentionally abandon the child in any place under circumstances that exposes the child to an unreasonable risk of harm.
Arredondo was employed as the Chief of Police for the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) during the Robb Elementary School shooting on May 24, 2022. He has been criticized for his role in the response to the shooting. Arredondo had claimed that the gunman couldn't be stopped because the doors to classrooms 111 and 112 were locked. Other evidence did not support his claims.
In an interview with The Texas Tribune, Arredondo said that he didn't think he was the incident commander for law enforcement, while Texas Department of Public Safety officials said that he was and that he made the decision to treat the situation as a "barricaded suspect" instead of an active hostage situation.
Nineteen children and two teachers died in the shooting.

Parents and Uvalde residents have been asking for accountability for the officers involved for over a year - a call that grew in July 2022 when video obtained by KVUE showed officers pacing in the hall for more than an hour rather than immediately acting.
Many of those first responders were seen in the hallway for more than an hour before entering the classroom where the gunman was with victims, in what the U.S. Department of Justice said was a response filled with "cascading errors."

You do know, That the courts ruled that they don't have a duty to protect you. Along with that, they can lie to you. Along with that, they can steal from you? Along with that, they can stop your life. Along with that, they get immunity. What part of their job are they required to do for us? Learn to be your own defense. Because when seconds count they don't even have to show up.

@@MeandBee Same diff. He’s still an officer of the law. Still. How can a whole incident like this bring charges to only one person? Officers, LTs, sergeants, patrol men etc seem to always be the focus. What about blaming those above them who have taken their power away to enforce the laws. Police in general today thanks to weak government have allowed this to happen. For most cops today, damned if you do damned if you don’t. If they would’ve busted in and someone died cops would be to blame, if they didn’t, cops would be to blame. Rediculous

@@eddiecardthat bs statement is ridiculous fr and add a touch of ignorance considering 19 kids were killed while aledondo actively told everybody to stand down so not even close to what you are saying or insinuating trying to somehow defend these cops is pathetic and disgusting

@@eddiecard It’s not the same. He was the Chief of school police, the person in change of the whole operation. He was paid as such. When he was cashing those check he never said “pay me less, I am not qualified or I won’t do a good job”. He accepted the pay, the tile, therefore he should accept responsibility for his bad actions.

@@aintrunnin6608 ignorance? Let’s talk about it.. I’m not saying or said he’s innocent. What I’m saying is, all the blame can’t all be brought down on solely one person. It starts from the top. You think because he was the chief it starts with him? In which way is my statement BS? You don’t think chiefs of police have higher ups? What about the fkn mayor? State Gov? You and I aren’t there to hear what they say behind closed doors. It could’ve been one kid or 100 still a tragedy no argument there and sure he should bare the weight of guilt but he can’t be the sole person to blame.

My thoughts exactly, a 10k bond? And 10 counts?? So the kids that survived lives are only worth 1000 dollars a piece to that judge so the judge should be worth about a 12 cents while the rest of the force is worth about 15 cents aka the price of cheap ammo

Those cops arrived at the school just three minutes after the gunman got there, but it took them a whole hour and 14 minutes to get up the courage to storm into the classroom. Blue Lives Matter.

All the police officers should be indicted are you kidding me they stood outside while kids and teachers got shot and killed in cold blood and that’s not going to bring them back or make up the loss of life at all that’s what training and tactics and assault weapons are for of course you make a choose to put on that badge and uniform to serve and protect with integrity and honor but there was nothing of that sort of actions taken that day by any law enforcement officers now was there 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 imagine now if that was all white kids and teachers there and everyone outside was black Asian Hispanic arab standing outside now that are police officers men and women Americans would want all officers tried now is this what justice looks like or is this something bigger now😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 I cried for an hour watching this 2 years ago now and even last year but I’m white and showed empathy towards those families and I never met them now how many Americans actually cried when this happened now really besides me now
