After you get an encounter there is a down time where you can’t get one. This down time is cancelled when you go in a menu, so the reason you got so many encounters is because you kept going in the character menu to kill one of the boys.

You could have Set their levels to negative. They immediately die when you do that so you could have fought with less than 8 characters.

No clue if you read any comments, Spiff, but I have a guess for why the encounter rate was so bonkers in the bizarro world (and just generally), and it's not as simple as standing still. A strat I've seen in the 157% run endgame, while you're farming for the remaining characters and ludicrous amount of money needed for the last armor, is opening and closing the menu (best I can remember any menu), moving the tiniest bit, and repeating. It _might_ be to somehow magically save in-game time at the expense of huge amounts of real world time (since per the rules loading screen times aren't counted in your final time), but on a 2 hour long category I feel like that's unlikely to be the _only_ motivation. As a complete guess, I think the game sorta puts you on encounter cooldown when you exit a fight, which is reset when there's a loading screen. Closing any menu leads to a loading screen. So areas with really high encounter rates (like late-game and especially bizarro world) bombard you with enemies if you keep opening the menu. Which, indeed, you do a lot in the run where you open the menu after *every* encounter. A real feedback loop, that one.

You can make a character have a negitive level, so when you enter a battle, they die outright. I played a 1 character challange that way in this game.

I like to imagine that Nightmare was a caring grandfather figure to the plebs. I will miss him so much

Hocus Pocus has a chance to change normal enemy encounters into weaker enemies. From my experience it's just very unlikely; probably doesn't work on the bosses, but it might.

I think everytime that character loading screen happens it refreshes the fights so you get an instant fight every time you swap out the characters
