“Maybe she saved her best for last.”
It would be fitting for one of the most beloved horses in racing history, Zenyatta, to close out her broodmare career the way she closed in her races. We had the great honor of meeting her new (and last) foal -- a filly by War Front named Nymue - and hearing the reflections and impressions of the man who signed the $60k ticket for Zenyatta back in 2005, David Ingordo.

I just adore Zenyatta. I have so many great memories of her. Thank you for this fantastic piece. I never get tired of seeing Zenyatta stories. That little baby seems a feisty one! Hope she can run.

Zenyatta is one in a billion! Her new filly is a dandy-may she have a long and healthy life and perhaps keep the line going. WAY too many owners breed their mares until they are so old that they die foaling.

So true. and so sad. Havre de Grace wasn't old, but when I read that they said she had complicated foalings, and yet they bred her again, I was just so angry. Good on them for ending Z's broodmare career now. God Bless her!

Words so true! It takes the right village of people to get a horse like this to her potential! And we know, she never exerted her 100% like all of her struggling brothers in the breeders cup! Truly is an act of God or fate with the right belief and circumstances. And, i’m my opinion, allowing Zenyatta to be who she was at all times. That is unheard of in Thoroughbred training. As John Sherriffs said, he had to learn how to, “get along with Zenyatta!”. I have owned one of Zenyatta’s nephew (Street Boss out of a Dehere mare) since 2017 and he picked me… He also did a dance for me! I was a 1st time horse owner and I have used all the guidance I’ve learned about Zenyatta for his training and taking care of him. I have always told his immediate caretakers , you need to tell him what is going on in advance, or there is going to be a problem. He does not like surprises. if you tell him what’s going on and what the plans are, everything is cool. He understands everything. It has been a struggle getting the right people around him. And I will not allow him to be miserable. These horses are very clear about how they feel and if only , even long time horse people , would stop being so fixed. I can attest that all the things used to work with Zenyatta , I have done with my Jake.

TB'S aren't considered relatives unless they share dams. Everything else is just considered similar breeding

Thanks for posting this! I remember watching the TV show Jockeys and seeing Zenyatta and Mike Smith. Because of them & that show I fell in love with horse racing. I attended my first Breeders' Cup last year :)

Great to see Zenyatta again, and do her pose dance again, as does her Foal.. Zenny is still so calm, so well reserved and i'm just happy she is retired and so happy as a Mom. The front leg movement is obvious, she poses during the interview because she knows humans are talking about her.

What a force of a horse. I also love how horses often continue to eat while the humans continue to talk, except in this case the foal. She is ready to get going. Makes me chuckle.

I just had a chance to look at Zenyatta's foal, wow, she is cute!! I just 💕💕💕💕 her!! She was just a hard-working, determined horse!! She never let anything stop her!! Her races were timeless and Mike Smith was a gem on her!! What a combination!! Late congratulations on your healthy baby girl!!!

Maybe a female goal can carry on more of Zenyattas great qualities than her males did. Nobody should ever expect for the offspring of the greatest horses ever to reach the level of their parent though. Man was she awesome. I still watch her races. It’s funny now to look back and think about the fact that there was an actual debate at the time over who was better, her or Rachel Alexandra. Of course it was already a silly debate then but after their careers it is laughable. I point out that Zenyatta had as many Grade 1 wins as Rachel had wins total (13) in nearly the same number of races (19 & 20). I wish Rachel’s people hadn’t backed out of the “showdown” where since they had spent her entire career avoiding the Breeders cup since Zenyatta was gonna be there) a 5 million dollar purse had been put up in another race to try and entice both to come but obviously only one did. One of my favorite replays Is Zenyattas 2010 Vanity Handicap where she faced off against her stablemate Zardana who had just recently beat Rachel. Because despite carrying an insane 129 lbs (unheard of for a female and hell rarely done for the best males) she ran down a really good horse who got to carry 9 lbs less! But the best part isn’t that it’s mentally picturing Rachel side by side slugging it out with Zardana who zenyatta flew by in a blue on her way to catching the leader

My horse , Jake, foal name, "Mr. Used Car," did her dance the day i met him. video was on face book but I can't find it! He is a Street Boss off spring and he is on his way to Elisa Wallace in January. New name: Street Dance Kid!

Blame Blame for putting the bad spot on Zenyatta's fool proof resume just sorry Mike Smith did not put two crack of the whip sooner all in all what is to be will be or que sera sera Zenyatta will leave us with such exhilarating finishes no other horse has ever shown just magnifique

He's too big. They kept her to smaller horses. Flightline is 16.3 hands and they didn't want the foal to be too big.

@@michellenainkristinabusch1221 They also said Zenyatta was too big. We see how she turned out. I think the foal would be around 6.5 Maybe. The stride though.

She was bred to War Front twice before this one. Who do you think she should have been bred to? Her owners have followed the widely held practice of breeding her to frontrunners/brilliant speed, since Zenyatta herself was totally lacking tactical speed.

@@truthboy1464 All that sounds sensible to me. (Though the owners seem so attached to her, it's pretty evident they would not have shipped her to Europe. They would have needed a European import.) I've wondered why, in light of her running style, and doing well on synthetic, they never tried her on turf. But since she is now 20, and has had a fair amount of reproductive issues, I am glad they are pulling her from broodmare duty.

@@robertdelacy3434 Stud fees are pretty much set at 1/3 of the average of what yearlings bring at the sales. If people are willing to pay out an average of $300K for a War Front yearling, his stud fee is what it is. That's how the free market values him.

@@robertdelacy3434 He's #1 in percentage of stakes winners (14%), he had an $800K filly at FT the other night, his average yearlings sell for $330K and his stud fee is $100K. If that is your definition of "gone that bad" I can't fathom your idea of what a successful stallion does.
