Welcome everyone!
Today's video is one of the beginning sessions of our Daily Handling Skills for foals. Our foals are born out in the fields as part of a small herd of broodmares.
We attend to the newborn a few hours after birth and check the foal and mum's health to ensure all is going as it should. The first 3 days are always a crucial time to ensure all vital work and the foal can get up, can drink, can pee and poo and is in good shape.
We handle the foals at the time when the mum is getting fed each day. Our daily handling of the foals includes some of the foundational cues eg. voice commands and body language. This video shows you just some of the activities we do in the early stage of a foals life.
-Standing still
-Touching all over with hand and string
-Touching new items (witches hats, brushes)
-Leading in liberty and with a rope around barrel and progression to leading around neck
Keep in mind that this session outline was not planned in its steps, we go with the flow of the foal and its mum and what the environment has to offer in a positive way.
Note: For the purpose of the video we have captured the footage in our big stable so that you can see what we do.
Enjoy.
