We caught up with vendors at this year's Toledo Expo to check out some of the hottest new RC products on the market today. In this RC product review video, Pete Ryan from Beacon demonstrates Foam-Tac and Foam-Finish in use and shows us how they can make your builds easier and longer lasting.

When using the foam finish, can you use it on the entire epo foam plane to smooth out all the little bumps on the plane? Also then can you paint the plane?

but how much weight does the foam finish add?

Your title is incorrect. The second product he demo'd is Foam-Finish. They also make a product called Foam-Filler, but that wasn't demo'd here.

as with all glues check first that it does not dissolve the foam....foam tac dissolved foam on my eflite p47, t28, and p17 micro parkflyer rc planes.

That's interesting because I've glued a couple planes back together now with foam Tac and had no dissolving issues. Those UMX micro birds though they seem to be a finer foam, yeah?

@@jonadam5392 I have never had an issue with Foam-Tac on any of my planes and I use it frequently. tip clogging is the only issue I have with the product.

Definitely test it first for sure. That being said, the small micros tend to be made out of the old school EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam which is not resistant to most oils or solvents in glues and paints. That stuff dissolves if you look at it funny... even butter, yes the dairy product, is listed as an oil that will attack EPS. Larger foam models these days are generally made from EPP (expanded polypropylene) and EPO (expanded polyolefin, composed of 30% polyethylene and 70% polystyrene). These foams are extremely resistant to most chemicals and solvents and in fact require glues containing harsh solvents or volatile organic compounds in order to achieve the best adhesion, like the Cyclohexane found in Foam-Tac. Hexane, Toluene, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Methylcyclopentane and various other Hexane isomers are used in other adhesives such as Devcon brand Contact Adhesive. bSi Foam-Cure contains Vinyl Acetate and Methyl Hydrate and the popular Welder glue by Homax uses Toluene. An added "bonus" of this chemical resistance - paint is easily lifted from EPO foam, even with low tack masking tape. It can make repainting a real nightmare. This is also a problem for the auto industry as most modern bumper covers and other parts are made from polyolefin plastics and paint adherence is a real issue. Lots of cars out there with paint flaking on plastic components after a relatively short life because of this.

Thats idiotic - how do you glue large surfaces precisely when you have to pull them apart 10 to 12 times?

I have glued planes back together from crashes and never did that method, maybe pulled them apart once or twice and then put together. They still come out fine, stronger than before ,better than hot glue. Kinda pricey though.
