I've owned B&W for years everything from the 600 series to the CM series, they are excellent speakers. Yes they will give you all the micro details of the recording, they very much excel at doing that but after an hour the ear fatigue creeps in. I sold my CM5's and got these Focal Aria 906's all I can say is that they do everything the B&W did but with the high's/trebble toned down just a notch. They remain very refined and I can listen to just about anything without getting tired, very pleased with the Aria 906's!

It seems that there is always a trade off between brightness/sweetness and the ear scratching..... A long time relax listening shall be more preferable for those who fk or get fked during the day and want to take a real true breath in the evening. So 906 rules.

I have both right now and I think that if the Focal 906 bass is a little bit more weighty, it will blow many speakers in its price range. I guess you can get the Focal 906 and add on a good subwoofer, which will cost a lot of money, but performance will be superb. The B&W 706 S2 is a more exciting speaker to listen to, but can be fatiguing after awhile. Just my 2 cents.

Great review! After listening to your audio comparison, I feel like you’re description in this video is exactly right. I’m not sure how you record but you did a really good job recording. I have been watching your videos for years, and you always do a really good job. I think people have different tastes when it comes to high frequencies; that is usually the biggest divider. Maybe because of my hearing, or just my taste, but I tend to enjoy speakers that have exceptional detail and do not sound mushy or veiled. I would say the the Focal are veiled; just not as precise and airy as the B&W. The base performance on both I thought were excellent as well. I also like the bass on my speakers to be present, but certainly not boomy and out of control. Both were excellent in that regard, but the B&W extended a bit lower, and produced a more balanced overall sound in comparison to the Focal. I honestly felt the midranges on both were excellent, and very close in comparison. If anything, the B&W midrange was a bit more defined and clear. Thanks again!

Having had both the B and W 602 and monitor audio silver 8, they are all exceptional speakers. But all British speakers seem to have the same sound. Refined and smooth as silk. Not bad at all but your ears do get jaded to that style of coloring the sound. Enter Focal flax and my ears jumped at a new flavor of sound. Much more lifelike and vivid. Put these Into my basement system with a small Martin logan sub crossed at 120 hz and it's a brave new world. Put the same drivers into a 2009 hummer h3 and it's a concert hall. Needed a subwoofer to smooth the low end but haven't heard anybody close to it. Finished it up with the clear headphones an my zone is complete. Can't recommend them enough. Come over and have a drink and a listen. Game changer .thx for reading my thoughts

The B&W 706s2 are not your typical "british sound" speakers. They are not "mid centric" like Harbeths, etc. They have more marked bass and highs. They sound much brighter than your "classic british" speaker. I love how they sound. What I haven't had a chance to try is how I would feel after an hour or two. Fatigue? I don't know. There is always graphic EQing to attenuate certain ranges if they become annoying. (?)

Thank you , very helpful review. If I would like to buy more than one couple of speakers and have the similar setup as you have, how is the speakers connected to the receiver? Do you need to unplug a set of speakers and then plug in the ones you are listening to, or can you connect all four speakers to the receiver and switch input between them? I am just starting to get interested in HIFI and I like the idea of having different speakers to choose from, depending of music or mood.

A big difference between the speakers is the port location. In theory that should make the focals a little less fussy to place as less sound energy is fired backwards. Could you do an experiment where you push the speakers (messured from the front) closer to the wall please?

I'm hopefully getting the Aria 906 for my Dad - they have a narrow shelf and it's right against the wall. Recessed terminals and short cabinet depth make these probably the best option for the shelf space.

The Focal all the way. B&W bloated upper mid and hard-edge highs. Fatigueing. I heard them both and bought Aria 906...yes, a tiny bit more laid back, but AMAZING vocals and highs and deeper base. Plus Focal has front port allows placement. Wide open soundstage. EVEN sound. Disagree ur opinion on midrange. One even (906) one more forward (706)

I've run those exact Focals with a Naim Nait 5si SS for 2 years then McIntosh C2600 and MC275 VI for another 2. I can't understand anyone who says the bass is lite... I'd look at your other components bcs my impression of these speakers are someone forget to tell them they are only bookshelves. I can listen for hours and never ear fatigue. I think if your system is harsh on your ears something is not right. Cable, pre, pa, source, media, etc either way that is not right. I have demo'd b&w in a studio and was impressed. But I have not critically listened to my familiar music for hours and hours to give a worthy opinion. I will say this. I did put together my 3rd system and it's a game ender...however I kept my focals and Naim I don't think I'll ever sell them if that means anything to someone looking at them.

I owned the Focal Aria 906's for a year and was very impressed with them, they are not harsh in the treble as some people have said about other models focal speakers, in fact they are very smooth & clean for a metal inverted dome tweeter. They are very relaxing to listen too and can generate a large scale with plenty of volume and still remain in control. Midrange is also very smooth, more so than a lot of recent designs which I find fatiguing, only complaint was I found the bass response a little odd which may have been my room or the amp I was using at the time. I doubt you'd do better if you can get them at a discounted price. I actually regret selling them.

Live entertainment is very subjective besides of the fact of different speaker layouts in concert hall/auditoriums/opera houses there is also the idea that there is live performance that have no speakers where they’re actually completely live and only carry the performance based on the production of what the instrument actually performs with the artist there is no middleman with the speaker receiver recording etc. also to your perception of hearing performances tend to be brighter that is not the Takeaway of everybody as though everybody has a set of ears that everybody hears the same

I have a pair of the first generation ones. A bit of a flatter sound imo. Not as "bright" as older B&W bookshelf speakers I've heard, probably not as euphoric as a Focal (I haven't heard one however). Bass will be tighter but not as prominent as the ported boxes. Weighs a lot owing to the huge magnet on bass driver. The new versions have their own bespoke tweeters, so it should sound better than the Vifa they used to use.

@@AudioElectronicsChicago why exactly? You buy an complete concept. Amplifier who build exactly for the drivers and use their full potential. I personally, never heard a pair of passives in any price range who sounds ,,better,, than the active ones i heard. And i heard a lot of well known Speakers where i wonder how people think that they sound good. Magico, Harbeth, B&W, Dali, KEF... Didnt like a lot of Speaker Models from them at all. The Genelec 8351 was the first speaker where i had a ,,wow,, effect and where i have the feeling, i hear the music and not a Speaker concept... But linearity isnt a concept for anyone. Otherwise Brands like Klipsch wouldnt be so successful. I own the KSDigital c88, abacus aroio & Oppo Darbee and for that money i bought them, there are for me not a lot of other options in that price range where i get these quality. No comparison to my previous Speakers (RF7 from Klipsch) at all... Complete different Level of quality

@@vtkz the amp is build for the speaker argument is false. Every good amp will work great with great speakers. The synergy that most of you claim is either a placebo effect or low quality interconnect, internal wiring or connectors that most of the time are neglected in passive speaker setups. There are amazing implementations of active speakers one for example is the kii three. But the majority in comparison with there passive counterparts are inferior solutions. Sidenote most confuse amplification with dsp. You can add dsp in the form of room correction to your passive setup and get far more better results than any pre build mode.

@@ndis1977 Nick Damianides At the end we can just speak for our listening taste and experiences with audio gear over the years - and compared to all Audio Gear i listen, i prefer the active ones over the passive. And to make it clear, in any segment you get good and bad concepts. But i think you get faster to the finish line with active ones because the manufactures choose the amp and fit to the drivers. I listen to a lot of passive setups from 2000 to 30.000 eur and i personally dont like a single one for 100% compared to (for example) the Genelec speakers, specially the 8351 or my actual KSDigital i listened and love. At the end its a matter of taste. I understand that a lot of people want to experiment with ,,big,, amplifier, cables and all that stuff and live the ,,bigger is better,, motto. But for my taste and my idea of an Hifi setup, i get way better sound with active Speaker in my room. My speaker performes on a realy high level compared to its price and i can thoughts about the realy important things like room acoustics and not ,,uhh that amplifier could work better,, or what cable solution i need - because when you spend some money on passive loudspeakers you 100% think about amplifier solutions and want to test out different amplifier concepts... I dont want that - i want an concept that works for me without testing a lot arround and thats why i choose active gear

Dali's have there own strong soft & sweet "honey" like sound character. Because of that there are missing some sharp and quick punchy notes. Let me put that way. In A-B audition in some HQ tracks (FLAC,CD...) it is hard to find if there are used drumsticks or drum brushes with Dali's Even lower line like B&W 606, KEF's R series for a fraction of second you can hear drum brushes scratching/sliding over the ride cymbal. Dali's character smooth out those fine details (Some may say in a musical manner) when it comes to represent quick/sharp notes So... IMHO deep sound brand signature is kind of the opposite to the "natural" Tharbamar could explain it much, much better than me. Thanks. Have a great day

Better solution => buy none of them or any classic Consumer ,,Low Budget,, passive Hifi and choose some Active Studio Speakers / Pro Audio Gear like the KS Digital C8. Better Concept, better Cabinet and most important better Sound.... There youve - Digital Firtec Filter - Carbon Driver - Steel Cabinet - no typical Hifi Sound - better sweet spot, mono middle and to identify / Locatability of Sounds - RJ45 for an extern Controler to set EQs... But the small Manufacturers never have a chance because every classic Hifi Dealer just sell the big names and you dont make money with small, none High Gloss or expansive lookin veneered, finished Speakers

Hi Dejan, Denon amp it self is not bright with many speakers I had, I’m not sure if you have experience with PMA 2000 IV series(last gen for U.S.) because preamp section is much improved over previous generation and Denon uses top of the line B&W and Dali speakers in their demo room, latest generation Denon amps were demo with B&W Diamond 800 series speakers in their demo room, Denon integrated and AVR sound is very different as well, thanks PS, I replaced my Accuphase E-306 with Denon PMA2000VIR back in 2007.
