➡️➡️Enter here to win a pair of Focal Shape Twin Studio Monitors: bit.ly/2OyqkTj
I haven’t listened to these monitors yet, so you’ll see my first and honest reaction in real time!
Whenever I try out new speakers, I always reference songs that I know and love. If you’ve been subscribed for a while, you’ll know where I’m going with this! I’m a huge Queen fan, and I always reference Bohemian Rhapsody since it’s a song that I’ve heard, oh I don’t know.. about 11,000 times! haha! I also know how the song sounds in this room.
I’m also going to listen to songs that I’ve recorded and mixed.
The Shape twins are smoother on the top end, with a spectacular low end, they're pretty darn good. They have a-lot more in the low end and low mids!

I think the membrane on the side is called a "passive radiator". I tried to build a speaker using one a while ago but it required a lot more knowledge and math than I had expected. No wonder why speakers from big brands sound so flat and responsive, when they've spend years figuring out how to build them properly :)

Nice review! I got a pair of shape 65s a couple months ago to replace genelec 8020s and I absolutely love the focals!! I actually found it really easy changing from the genelecs to focals because I think they are quite similar sounding for mixing.

Just got a pair of Shape Twins. Running them in, but they already sound marvellous! Paid a tribute and listened to Bohemian Rhapsody (of course), and I had the impression Freddy Mercury was there, in the room with me. Thanks for all the fresh ideas and explanations you bring. I know this video is 2 years old, but I discovered it recently, so for me it's all new, like my fantastic Focals! Thanks:-)

Interesting to note that you described them as being a very flat response and as it turned out the adjustments were at 0. Strikes me that as a design that is spot on as a platform to move forward as you did with tweaking to get the response pattern as you prefer.

@cun7us 5 жыл бұрын
pMx 7001 I also own the Shape 65's and pretty happy with them. Apparently the Twins handle the low end better as they have one driver specifically for the mids and the other for the lows. However, they're both 5" woofers as opposed the Shape 65 which has a 6.5" woofer, so you're probably right about them having less low end.

These look great, and by your assessment, Warren, are good monitors. The 'passive radiator' concept (I prefer your "resonant speaker thing') is really intriguing. I've researched them a bit. Focal is claiming those passive radiators help maintain the tonal balance across various SPL levels, and the tweeters disperse, rather than focus, the radiated highs. Did you hear all that in the Focals when you tested them next to your Genelecs, both before and after your rear-speakers tonal adjustments?
@Producelikeapro

What’s your advice for the sweetspot for this speakers? I found out that’s like it more to sit more between them and not in the perfect triangle. But I get a bit confused because when I move my head back just 5 cm the sound completely changes. I already made a Sonarworks measurement and checked the 30 degree angele etc. but there is still a gap exactly at 62hz and a huge push at 120hz. But this is changing drastically when I move my head within the sweetspot! Any hints?

Focal are nice, but let me know when you are giving away any of the Barefoot monitors. I've heard many monitors in my years of recording but the Barefoots blew my mind like nothing else although they start with the "home studio" version that just came out at just under %k CAD then jump to 10K and up into the 60K plus so the only way I will get them is to win them! But I'd be happy with the Focal monitors too, give ya $20 if you fix it so I win...

My biggest problem is I don't have the opportunity to play it loud anymore. I have a Palmer speaker simulator/power soak to use it in the studio, and I can use cabinet IRs to get a great recording sound, but I miss blaring it out of my 4x12 cabinet and feeling my shirt shake when it got to "5"!

luckystrke indeed! It was a comparative test between speakers. I’m happy to use anything that gives us a real world experience! Speaking of which how is Tidal doing?
@luckystrke
@luckystrke 5 жыл бұрын
@@Producelikeapro Tidal is still great. Uncompressed, and even higher resolution Masters on a lot of releases. It's also great for sampling, i.e to grab some Lossless Drum Samples or loops for production. (I use the loopback function on my RME interface)

Me too, and without wanting to offend Amazon, it pleases me, that there a at least some big music stores, which can offer stuff at a better price. I checked again, the average price here is maybe around 1700-1800€, which is a hell lot of money for most people, but compared to genelec and alike a steal.

Interesting. Makes sense. Privacy is especially important as long as humans continue to live under and support top down statist governmental systems. It becomes mostly irrelevant in social frameworks that are not based on oppression. Good to know, thanks!

@Produce Like A Pro Thank you for your response. I have respect for your knowledge and experience in the studio. It just bothers me that everyone praises monitors on all cost levels when doing reviews and don't mention much about cons. Not sure I would want to keep changing monitors in my studio all the time. It takes time to learn the monitor character in your room especially after they open up a bit. It took me a while to learn my Focal monitors. But now I have such confidence that my mixes are what I want. There is no need to go to the car stereo or anywhere else to double check. Granted I have a smaller powered Yamaha monitors as a 2nd source and Beyer 1990 headphones.
