Great progress on that example. Couldn't agree more: multi-skill job. Breaks, suspension, fuel lines/tank/filter, exhaust, bodywork. I've done this journey on my Turnier. Took two weeks in 2022. New bolts and bushings everywhere, new copper break lines, new fuel filter, fuel tank cleaning etc. I'm a bit mad tho', my Focus lost the local MOT last week. Worn-out tires.. must be replaced ASAP, just like the right front ball joint (and the bloody leaky thermostat housing).

Mine had a new rear subframe 5 years ago, my biggest regret was not painting it. 5 years on its completely rusted again wish i had zinc primed it and sprayed it.

That's interesting mate you'd think the protection would of improved on the new frame iv just stone chipped everything and not planning on taking it out in the rain

That is really alarming that we have to go over the finish of these new frames! I am suspicious that they wont be a long lived as the originals, but by now most are not used as dailies or less so as time goes on, so less deterioration as less winter driving.

Does the whole IRS not drop out? You are right about the heat up and cool down, well should be, called quenching. Might as well use a garden hose with a spray nozzle. Problem is that rubber. Quenching is underused. Usually better to put it down into a bucket but doesn't look like you'd be able to there. Also looks a bit impossible to get everything quenched at same time.

It can do in one unit but it depends what your replacing, you will still need to detach the hubs/trailing control arm from the assembly to be reusused on the new frame etc!

I've done the anti row bar bushes on the rear axle and that was a nightmare I used my blow torch I could do the job I've got plenty of tools and a mini grinder and a big one don't bother me cutting stuff off if it saves me time and stress bet everything is not cheap would have to be worth doing depending on the state of the focus but would make it easier to do any welding on the back of the car the joy of the but that patch on the drivers side is not good I would have to sort that out would bug me but it's ok for me to say (you know why) but I've seen a few holes in the back on the photos but interesting to know what you got to do 👍

There is some bodywork that will be professional done at some point as you've spotted, this is very minimal on a MK1 which is good for Dave in this restoration. Those rear ARB Bushes are horrible and I got mine out using an impact gun with stupid torque, otherwise I'd be using a grinder myself.

@@usuallyfixingtinkeringI no that's not a lot of welding on a focus I've done nearly the whole back end on one 12 months ago but if he's spending that sort of money on it then it needs tidying up as them plates could of been done better my plates would of been level of the body and not put the plate over it then welded when ground down and painted it would of been hard to see that it had been done just to pass a MOT I hate putting plates over and thing as it sticks out but fair play to Dave can't you just clean them subframe up instead of replacing them? Saves £200

I agree I would want things flush and when I payed for welding to be done on my focus (which you will see soon) on the rear sill it's all flush, the arches could be grinded down flush but within the arch it just has to be relatively neat and functional as it's not really seen. I cannot stand when patches are layed onto the sill that look like a cheap plate tacked over the top!

Fantastic video as always , great to see the rear subframes are making a comeback as mine is looking abit worrying , is this something that just the focus suffers from or is it other platforms like the Mondeo etc? Maybe even the more modern ones that are about ten years old now would be interesting to see if they suffer too
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering 25 күн бұрын
I do think other fords like the mondeo are very much suffering subframe issues, many cars down the years have subframes that rot badly... Classic Minis for one!
@vevos_
@vevos_ 23 күн бұрын
Mondeo suspensions also have the cheap powder-coating. Powder-coating is not durable enough alone, you need extra protection on top of it which of course wasn't done in the factory to save money. With some niche exceptions there is no aluminum anywhere until we got the MK5.

@@vevos_ blimey that’s terrible so even the mk4 mondeos suffer from it which was a car I was originally gonna get

@vevos_ 23 күн бұрын
@@Generalkenobi325 you should get one it's a great car... the MK4 is actually very sound over all in terms of rust. It doesn't really suffer from rust apart from possibly the subframe as I said. There are many nice ones out there.
