After getting a grip on major, minor, dominant and half diminished chords, I think it's important to study fully diminished 7th chords and augmented triads, as they function harmonically in all 12 keys. This exercise will help you to make musical sounding voicings as you navigate through these types of chords.

Dear Aimée, your exercises on major, minor, dominant and half diminished chords were already great in bringing together music and technical exercise. But this exercise here is a masterpiece! These four bars are touching. This little exercise hides a song. I hope, you let it out one day.

Hello Aimee. I know this is random, but I just found your channel and you will be having another subscriber. I just came from a watching a channel on someone who produces electronic EDM music. And one thing I have noticed is that EDM hardly if at all uses any Diminished and Augmented chords in their progressions. And I believe they should. But that's just me. This beautiful chord progression inspired me to see what I can do. I think any body working with any genre of music should check out this lesson. Beautiful lesson and I hope you are well.

Nice lesson. I appreciate your approach to these chords by putting them in exercises with a functional harmonic context. The explanation that a diminished chord is a four way crossroad is also not my usual way of thinking. That is a theoretical view resulting from vertical thinking, popular in jazz but giving me many problems - maybe it's me and others are happy with it. Take a noun or a verb. You can look it up in a dictionary and find different meanings. Chords get their meaning in a sentence, just like words. When you talk you don't think about all the possible meanings of all the words you utter.

This video is very useful for me. You've identified a challenge that I face, which I hadn't fully realized - a habit of perceiving chords primarily with one-handed voicings. I tend to practice left hand voicings with right hand improvisation. An exercise like this challenges me to break my routine and spread my chord perception over a wider range. I really appreciate that you seem highly aware that each learner experiences an exercise differently depending on where they are in their learning process. Many KZfaq jazz videos focus on playing as though it is a behavior - knowing which notes to play, or an abstraction - understanding a musical code. The behavior-oriented videos give you "tricks" which can sound great in isolation but be hard to integrate into one's playing. I wonder if you are simply highly empathetic in your approach to teaching, so your learner-centered approach is natural to you, or if you consciously think through your musical education philosophy. I would love to hear more about insights into learning processes. Thanks, as usual, for a wonderful video.

What a nice comment. Thank you. I think the former is probably true. Most personality tests I have taken place me in the empathetic zone. I always try to put myself in somebody else’s shoes, especially when I’m trying to teach them something. I also try to remember what it was like for me and take myself back to that place when I explain to other people. I’m glad it works for you. :-)

Hi Aimee or anyone! Could you please suggest a basic 2-handed rootless voicing for a diminished chord? Like for a dominant 7th basic options are: L: 3-7/R: 9-6 or L: 7-3/R: 6-9. What would the equivalent basic rootless voicing be for a diminished chord? (And am I right that piano player should use rootless voicing when comping on a diminished chord w/ a bass player?) I checked out your "Diminished Chords: My Favorite Trick" video, but I don't see rootless options in that either? (I put this question there too!) Thank you!
@AimeeNolte

Look at my jazz Bible video. When playing diminished chords, it’s OK to put the root in your voicing. So say Adim...C, Gb left hand and A, B and Eb with the right is a nice option. Or A, D, Eb with the right

Jacob Collier is such a showoffer.. How can someone understand and learn from that explanation? I stick with Aimee so that even the ones of us who doesn't have a degree at Berklee can understand something. Thanks for sharing!
@mer1red
@mer1red 4 жыл бұрын
I don't have a Berklee degree but I did study some of their courses and general music in local schools. All I can say is that Berklee means a lot of prestige, unnecessary complexity and things you don't really need (I'm mainly talking as a guitar player). So don't worry :-). Jacob behaves more like some religious preacher with misty words where in fact the things he explains are simple. He does have a talent (his ability to recognize pitches), but talented people are not necessarily good teachers.

I don't think he was trying to show off in that video (it's actually fairly basic theory about diminished chords). But the theory stuff Jacob talks about requires some more knowledge - he talks about a bit more complex concepts. His stuff isn't for beginners, but understanding it doesn't require a degree either. Any way, it was just a short video about the use of diminished chords (for someone who may already understand how they generally work), whereas Aimee goes deeper into the basics of everything. Yes, Aimee is definitely much more accessible for beginners. But that doesn't make Jacob Collier a "showoff" either.
@mer1red
@mer1red 4 жыл бұрын
@@MaggaraMarine I believe that Marco was referring to other video's of Jacob, not the one with that fragment shown here. At least I was. But, have a look at "How to Modulate to G 1/2 Sharp (Jacob Collier-style)", and others. ... . About the diminished chord: I prefer to say: it's a fairly common description in Jazz, too much resulting from repeating what others say, but, for me, missing a solid foundation and not satisfying. It is not possible to go into detail here. See also my other comment.
@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine 4 жыл бұрын
@@mer1red I see those weird concepts like "how to modulate to G half sharp" more as ways of getting people excited about advanced music theory. I mean, if your music actually modulates to G half sharp, why wouldn't you talk about it? That's what Jacob does well - he makes people feel excited about theory. He makes people want to learn more. I mean, when he mentioned stuff like "negative harmony", everybody was trying to figure out what that meant. He talks about theory in a really exciting way - he makes it sound fun and interesting. He may not be best at teaching those concepts, at least for beginners (everything just seems so natural to him, which is why it may be difficult to relate to the way that he explains stuff, unless you already know a lot), but he is great at making people feel excited about music theory.
