I like how his character was introduced as someone the gang didn't want, but needed to keep the bar. His character in the show forced himself into the hijinks which is reflective of how it happened in real life.

It’s great for the story too, because they can do outlandish things with his money, that they wouldn’t be able to do before. We wouldn’t have the Boggs episode, or the Ski episode, or the Gang Broke Dee.

You know usually a producer forcing a celebrity character the showrunners didn't want ends in disaster. But holy crap did Devito jump in straight at the deep end with a 200% performance, to the point it's now his most iconic character.

One of those rare instances where a studio’s meddling with creative choices actually enhanced a show. Always sunny is still hilarious in the first season without Danny and it works without him, but when he came on it was like adding a delicious sauce to compliment an already tender and well seasoned steak.

@@anthonyludwig2891 I watched until season like 10 when I cut the cord. And couldn't pirate it honestly don't know if it's still airing. I remember watching till the cruise ship bit. It really took me awhile to get the bit because I had never really been exposed to comedy where the main joke is how terrible the people are before at first I thought they were just stupid and fucked up with a straight face and after I watched about the third episode I got that they were being ironic. Maybe I'm autistic 🤔 anyway great show I think they tread some really innovative and new ground for network television. If you know of other media that is similar please enlighten me.

iirc, they didn’t want to bring a big star and wanted to keep the show like a small passion project thing between them. i can see how bringing a big name might’ve felt like it would’ve brought a lot of compromising of their vision, considering IASIP, especially the first seasons, weren’t afraid to get real nasty with their jokes lmao. perhaps they thought the star they brought would be “too good” to stoop down to their brand of comedy. luckily danny wasn’t afraid of it lol, becoming arguably one of the most degenerate members of the gang.

Something to consider: Despite how much bullshit higher ups tend to force the minds of a show/movie/game/whatever, there are people who do know what they're doing or make good decisions in those positions.

Its honestly sad how rare examples of this are, since most producers end up completely messing up a production with their stupid decision making. But just as you said, every once in a while there are those times where producers make a call that ends up being the right choice

Fun Fact: When Danny was added in the second season, he only had 3 weeks to film for the show before leaving for another obligation. They filmed every one of his scenes for the entire second season in 21 days. After the success of that season, he was able to devote more time to IASIP

From literally the very second Frank is introduced to the show it’s impossible to imagine it without him. And that’s a testament to not only how well they write Frank but how naturally Danny fits in with all four of them.

They did really well because Danny's character is introduced in the beginning as a no nonsense vindictive business man then he meets Charlie and it completely flips and Danny honestly falls right into this perfect character

Danny Devito fits this show like a glove. There isn't anyone else who could play Frank Reynolds. He is the MVP of the series. If it wasn't for him, the show probably wouldn't have survived.

I love how they incorporate his character as Dennis and Dee’s dad with a bunch of money. A direct metaphor to his real life role in the show as a recognizable person that brought in a bigger budget. Props to Danny, Rob, Glen, and the rest of them for making it work perfectly

this is the only live action show i can watch on repeat and thoroughly enjoy and sometimes i even find another layer to a joke i missed making it all the funnier. the writing is S tier.
