In the last great American dynasty her husband is the one who died of the heart attack. And at the end Taylor says “then it was bought by me” so the whole story was about the lady who owned the house before Taylor bought it. ICONIC

Rumor has it that Rebekah’s story will be Taylor’s first movie, starring Blake Lively. Which, if so, I’m SO excited! I really, really hope it’s true (even tho I know it’s probably not).

i think what happens is.....swifties know a lot of her life background which helps us to understand songs. newer people/non-fans listening to the song one time and not knowing......that's why they just don't understand it like we do. listening to her as a swiftie and listening to her as a newcomer are such different experiences in my opinion. i'd have a similar reaction if i were him, i would think it's about a breakup or a toxic friend/family member.

The mirrorball is Taylor. It is about how she is up on the tightrope trying to keep us entertained all of the time. She literally has worked so hard to improve her voice and take dance lessons to keep us looking. She shines brightly but she is broken. She puts her songs out into the Universe. The audience refects their ideas, feelings and broken hearts on to her and her songs. 💔

tbh imo Jack Antonoff just not really good in making indie folk song in production wise. august is the only I can kind of accept but other songs are just meh. I also don't really like gold rush in evermore. It's not bad song, but it just doesn't feel like fit in the folklore/evermore sounding, I feel like it's more on softer Midnight tracks. In the other hand, Aaron Dessner captured the vibe so well makes me actually like evermore than folklore.

My Tears Ricochet: Scott Is the man that discovered her at the bluebird cafe in Nashville in 2005 and signed her to his record label which he didn't even really have one at the time, Taylor was the first artist on the label and basically built the label. He was family to her and her family. Then when it came time to renew her contract with the lable, which was after reputation (which 'Look What You Made Me Do' also was directed towards Scott, Like if you knew everything, that song would probably resonate better with a lot more people and they'd probably like that song more, It's a lot more clever and a clap-back not only to Kanye but to as I said, Scott. Hence "The old Taylor can't come to the phone right now, why? Oh, because she's dead' referring to her basically losing/knowing she was losing all of her previous work, but thats just part of what that line in that song meant; The scene in the music video where she lifted the motorcycles aka the "Big Machines" which is the name of her previous label, Big Machine Records, was an easter egg as to what she was planning to do, reclaim her lifes work by re-recording albums 1-6, also again hence the "Look what you made me do" as in, im rerecording my albums and owning my damn work, the songs I wrote, the words that came from me and my experiences; She was told she basically wouldn't be able to switch labels and own her previous 6 albums so he gave her an ultimatum: resign with me and for every new album you put out, you get one back, and she was like, No? So Scott, who knew she pretty much despised scooter, sold her entire catalog to him out from under her which therefore she lost the right to own her life's work, her own words, her own melodies, all of it. For which then she was told she wasn't even able to perform any of her songs from her first six albums, as it would be seen as 're-recording' them (before she was able to) Which is why we now have Taylor's Versions. I am 100% sure this has been commented but thats what "My Tears Ricochet" is about.

Look What You Made Me Do was released by Big Machine records, before Swift's fallout with Borchetta. Borchetta would have reviewed and approved the music video, I highly doubt Swift knew at the time she would be re-recording her albums.

Mirrorball isn't about a girl trying to keep someone in her life, it's about Taylor's artistry. "I (Taylor Swift) want you (the listener... the Swiftie) to know, that I'm a Mirrorball." It's a love song to her greatest love, the reason she is an artist. The regulars and masquerade revelers are critics and papparazzi. She doesn't see them as her fans. Her fans are not like them.

i love illicit affairs so much. i know what she wrote it about but i connect to it in a different way- how it felt to lose my first love. i felt invisible. i felt him slipping away. and i worried it was all a lie. the “illicit affairs” i think of when i hear the song are how his friend slandered me to him until he was too scared to lose his friend if he dated me so he disappeared. the clandestine meetings are him and his friend group eating lunch together every day, close as can be while i don’t get to be near him. the stolen stares was how i couldn’t stop looking for him, looking at him, for years after the fact. i take illicit affair not to mean like a love affair but just a general matter or thing or event. it kinda reminds me of ivy- one time when i was listening, i heard the song as “my pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand. taking mine, but it(“your freezing hand”)’s been promised to another”. instead of hearing the lyrics as i want you but im taken, it became i want you but you’re taken. i have related to both at some point in my life (both about the same guy, my first love) and i love how the lyrics are written in a way that you can interpret it in the way that will make you cry the hardest

Love seeing your journey discovering Taylor's more recent work, but I'd say it's worth digging into the storytelling on some of the songs that I think you're not quiiiite getting, esp. Mirrorball (is more about trying to keep the public's attention as an artist without destroying yourself) and The Last Great American Dynasty (about a real person!). However I feel like people who just wrote her off as xyz type of musician or rolled their eyes at her music had only ever heard her top singles. Which is understandable that you haven't gone out of your way to listen to her deeper cuts if you didn't like what was on the radio, but I think it goes without saying that pretty much almost every artist that has a chart topping hit usually has some songs that aren't promoted as singles that are way better or more relatable

This album is full folk/indie, hence the name Folklore. This album has so much depth to it. When you get the chance, watch the Long Pond StudioSession. In it, Taylor is at Aaron Dessner’s upstate NY studio as mentioned by the name of the studio. It’s a small documentary about some of the songs. For some preface, here are a few and some TW for addiction, suicidal ideation, etc: 1. This Is Me Trying is about someone who is struggling with life, addiction, süicídal ideation, etc and is the person telling their loved ones, This Is Me Trying. I wanted to drive off the cliff but, I thought of my loved ones and didn’t 2. My Tears Ricochet is about Scott Borchetta, who was the head of her first ever record label, when she was 16. She trusted him explicitly and he threw her to the wolves by selling her albums out from under her. Now the tears she cried are his because while he’s sitting there wearing the watch he bought off of the money she made him, she began re-writing all of her albums (Taylor’s version) and he effed himself over in the end 3. The Last Great American Dynasty is about the beginnings of her home in Rhode Island and how everyone gossiped that she only married her husband for the money and probably redrummed him with her partying ways. He was an heir to the Standard Oil Company, it’s a true story that took place. There are a lot more but, that’s just some perspective of songs on this album and Evermore, which is in similar style. Of course, you know about the love triangle songs of Betty, James, and August (Augustine).

Simply breathtaking. 🥺❤️🥺 Also, Peace is a song that she wrote for anyone who desires to be near Taylor, because she will always be under media scrutiny, never even being able to go to a nail salon, and constantly being in scrutiny theirselves by association in her friends/loves. She can promise them she will give as much of herself as possible, but, they will not know any peace by walking with her in life.

Folklore is my kind of music. I love folk music and though they are a bit different in Taylor's album they still hit the spot. Her lyrical meanings behind things are INCREDIBLY thought through. Folklore is most definitely one of my favorite albums by Taylor that I can listen to the whole way through without skipping a song.

Mirrorball is about how there are so many different facets of each of us- we’re each a reflection of our surroundings and are different people depending on the circumstances. None of those individual facets tell the whole story of who we are until you put them all together (like a mirrorball).

I think this was her most vulnerable album and without ego as you mention because of when the album was written which was during COVID lockdown - there was so much fear, anxiety and she used this album as an outlet. It was even released without any marketing beforehand - it was a surprise!

You know, I've been seeing and hearing and listening to many many people starting to come around to Taylor who never had before, what I call their Testimony. Myself included when I went to see the Eras tour film last Nov. Whatever it takes to connect to her music and there's a lot and then that's maybe the gateway and eventually the flood gates open! Is this your testimony?! Check out her live Grammy 2021 medley performance of songs from Folklore and Evermore, it's great! Also see the Eras tour film!

Yeah, I kinda feel like he needs to go back and listen to many of these songs with the lyrics in front of him, cuz… he missed and mis-remembered a lot. Like how much of Taylor was in this album, including Last Great American Dynasty. (He also missed the fact that the song was literally about Taylor buying Rebekah’s house and becoming the new woman with bad habits and madness to live there. …I love how they tell this story in Eras.)

Also yes she was all that amazing stuff but the song does describe her as obnoxious in a way she was loud and threw party’s and “had a marvelous time ruining everything” so definitely obnoxious in the best way 😇😇

The last great american dynasty is actually a real story about Rebekah Harkness, who lived in Taylor's house (holiday house/high watch) in Rhode Island before Taylor did. I'd recommend looking into the history of it because the story is actually very interesting.

As someone new to Taylor, it’s understandable that you wouldn’t be 100% on par with what her songs are about. I also think it’s okay to take your own interpretation to her music, that’s what she wants fans to do anyway. I’m so glad you enjoyed this album. Welcome to the fandom ❤

Now listen to Evermore - Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) features on the title track. Also, Taylor and Justin feature again on a song, Renegade, for The National - great song. You also need to watch/listen to the Long Pond Studio sessions… she explains each song motivation and her thoughts on it, and then sings each song acoustically… it’s fabulous.

I watched a breakdown of Illicit Affairs that was super interesting….if you take a re-listen it almost exactly parallels to someone suffering with drug addiction, or having an “illicit affair” with substance abuse, not necessarily another person. Makes it even more gut wrenching but so incredible her play on words to have so many intentional interpretations.

i so agree about taylor’s unique melody writing ability, especially in her later discography. her melodies are very specific and very freaking cool. and what i love the most about them is that she obviously writes her own lyrics and knows how to accentuate them in the melody, so it works really well together. she’s just a genius i don’t know what you want me to tell you
