By Airfix standards, this isn't an OLD kit. Growing up in the 1960's, the Gnat always appealed. The RAF chose the Hunter, yet the Gnat could deal with that one in a dogfight! Amazingly, the Gnat was smaller than a Spitfire, yet could manage almost 700mph. Incredible.

Fun to watch you transfer your wealth of information on to new people. As a young pre-teen I remember driving my mother over the bend constantly borrowing her nail files, emery boards, tweezers and what ever else to assist in my new found hobby. Great memories!

Wonderfully finished Yellowjack. Currently building this myself, it's fine for the most part, but those intakes, and that part that goes between the rear landing gear have been nothing but a pig's ear for me. Tooling's certainly showing it's age like you say.

I find using a cocktail stick to apply the glue is a good idea. I use my modelling knife to trim the cocktail stick to a very fine point which makes it a little easier to apply the glue to very small areas.

A nice little kit, and not quite as basic as the Gnat i built back in the day, though that carried the normal RAF Trainer colour scheme. And those wing serial numbers... The display aircraft never used them, certainly for display, but the normal trainers did have slipper tanks, one on each wing, which fitted flush to the underside of the wing...

I always paint a matt white base coat first on anything that needs to be painted yellow, which I find really brings the brightness of the yellow out more easily. Your finished kit does look great Gary.

Nice one. I suggest that it will go easier if the model is given a thin, even coat of silver paint and left to dry completely before applying the yellow paint. This will aid the coverage of the yellow. This kit looks to be a quick weekend build and is very attractive in its yellow livery.

Great job making the model using only the basic tools/paints. Too bad you didn't use the aircrew figures. The sparse cockpit would have looked better with them in it. A base coat of beige makes yellow go on better. Keep up the excellent work my friend. Bill

Another super video Gary, very enjoyable. Thank you. I agree that Airfix are expecting a lot from beginners, especially if they're doing the build just with the box contents. Like their 1/72 Bf109 with its tiny parts and huge sprue gates, really fiddly and difficult. And that yellow paint!!

Hi Gary, I built the Red Arrows 2012 issue last year. The quality seems to have been better than the one shown here. Beautiful little kit. Easy to make. I painted mine with the old RAF trainer colours and included the slipper tanks provided. Another KZfaq modeller ( Model Minutes) built the Lidl/Aldi Jet Provost but there was quality control issues with that one too. Perhaps as you say they were bulk produced with lower QC for Christmas. Your Gnat came out well using just the materials provided. All the best, Ian

Hi Gary, I loved it. I would be interested to see how you make your sanding boards. I see a lot has changed since I last built anything, we used to have enamel paints, thinners, awkward to clean brushes a distinctive smell and, usually, a mess. I like the "stickit to a block of wood with blue tack", thats a new one to me. I remeber that with the soldier sets Airfix did, it was necessary to wash the parting agent off with soapy water before painting. Adhesive from tape might be a problem too. Might that improve the application of these acrilics? Did you intend not to paint the rear cockpit bulkhead? There was definately not enough colours of paint to include the aircrew. She sat on her nose wheel without a bit of extra weight. Unusual but pleasing. Lovely build and you showed a lot of useful techniques that the beginner (or even returner) can benefit from. You kept it simple. Thats very good.

The sanding sticks are just lolly sticks (popsicle sticks to my friends across the water) with bits of sandpaper glued on. I did a short about it and it's in my "10 Top Tips" video from way back near the start of my channel. With almost every kit I wash the parts first in case some release agent has been used - although i know for sure it's not used on the 1/24 Spitfire! But acrylics still have an issue bonding to shiny plastic at first. Glad you like the videos, I try to keep it to what an everyday modeller is comfortable with!

Hi Gary, sorry if this is a stupid question. I'm an experienced modeller but have always made ships. I came across a gut talking about "canopy dipping" and wondered if this is something you know about and could say whether it's useful/necessary
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
I don't do it myself - maybe I should - but I believe the idea is to dip the canopy in some "Klear" floor polish - apparently it makes the plastic extremely, well, clear. I guess it's really good when you've got a lot of cockpit detail - maybe for 1/48 and bigger.

@@garys_stuff Hi Gary, I've got the 2012 Red Arrows issue of this kit (A55105) and I've just opened it to check the moulding. The plastic of the older issue is a darker grey and the moulding looks much crisper and cleaner. This is particularly noticeable on the undercarriage, aerials and air intakes as shown at 18:50 in your video. I'm surprised by the difference as the moulds are only 10 years old and wonder if the newer polystyrene is softer. I did build this kit at it's first issue in 2012 and liked it a lot. That's why I also got the Red Arrows version, plus the last time I saw the Red Arrows live they were still flying the Gnat! From memory the construction around the air intakes, cockpit and fuselage was a bit tricky and I agree that it's not ideal as a starter set both for that and because of the yellow paint. The red one I've got wouldn't be much easier to paint without primer and using a hairy stick. 🙂 Enjoyed the video and I like how you aim these starter set builds at less experienced modellers.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
@@jonmurnaghan6356 thanks for that Jon. I'll ask about this later as I wonder if the Lidl/Aldi offered were moulded in bulk to order and perhaps had less quality control. Having visited the factory where the new 1/24 Spitfire is made, it's clear there are many ways a shortcut can be taken that may have a detrimental effect on a kit, so I hope this isn't the case. The issue of the plastic formulation is an interesting one, as they do add softeners and flow improvers to the raw polystyrene as well as colourants.

I have this kit and there’s something about it that confuses me. There are some parts in the kit that don’t seem to be mentioned at all in the instructions. Those are 1b and 2b and 14a. What are those for?
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 11 ай бұрын
Auxiliary fuel tanks for the wings. In normal service they had extra fuel for longer training flights, for short displays they didn't carry them. Earlier versions of this kit used the tanks.

13:37 did you add thinner or water?
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
I use a little water normally. You can of course use an acrylic thinner but I'm not sure it would make much difference! If I'm diluting for an air brush I use thinner because I think it dilutes more evenly, but with brush painting there is a lot of mechanical mixing during the brushing process and it seems to work.
@randytaylor1258
@randytaylor1258 Жыл бұрын
@@garys_stuff The acrylic thinners also let the paint flow and level out over the finish. Also, it increases the drying time, both of which help hide brush marks.

I’d agree Ian. It isn’t sold as a starter set as such, but when you include paints, brush and glue it is clearly intended for modellers with little or no experience.
