More than 20yrs ago when I was in class eight, 14 girls in our school got pregnant during that yr - these were girls between classes 4 to 8. Some local guy even published the story in the newspaper. A well known primary school in Homabay. Didn't get much attention. My deskmate and friend was pregnant during KCPE. 2 other girls in our class were pregnant too. And I now remember clearly 3 male teachers calling me aside one afternoon and I didnt know what they were talking about. I must have looked at them weirdly like what? I didn't understand then, but now I understand. I am one of the lucky ones that got away intact. The saddest part was coming home for holidays in Form 1 and seeing my classmates with babies, having dropped out, some married young. My deskmate got 450 marks out of 700. She was from Mbita. I never saw her again. Don't know which high school she ended up in. That girl - in not for her pregnancy - could have easily gotten more than 500 marks and got a place in a national school. She was among the best girls in our year. *Sigh* My sweet Somali deskmate didn't even get to class eight. I was to meet her later when in high school and I didnt even know what to say to her. She was my age mate, but here she was married with two kids, running her own own home. I remember that awkward moment when I stood outside her house and said hi. God. We were both children for Christ sake. Around the same period - I might have been 13/14yo, could be class seven - another classmate of mine whom we walked home with from the same neighbourhood picked me up from home and told me to take her somewhere. I innocently agreed, only to end up in a well-known guys house in the neighbourhood. This was a holy church guy who would greet our parents when he was passing by with 'Praise the Lord, sister'. He operated a butchery in the neighbourhood. I sat in the living room. I didn't know what she had come to do there. Maybe she was picking something then we leave? She disappeared behind the curtains. It was one of those single room houses with a curtain partition. didn't know the guy was in the house. But I kid you not, I saw her legs protruding from the curtains. I didn't understand. After some minutes, she came out of behind the curtains red eyed. I didn't understand. But I sort of understood. But what did I understand???? God. I never asked her a question. She didn't come back to school next year in class eight. Never saw her again. About the same time, I remember once walking around the shops, must have been running an errand, when this same holy guy called me to the butchery. I innocently went, coz it was right during the day. We bought meat from this butchery so my mind didn't even think that anything could be wrong. Maybe I was supposed to take maet home to my mom, or maybe she ad soe change left there? He started going to the room behind the butchery and was motioning me there. I was confused and hesitated like what is going on? Thankfully, at the same time, a woman came in and loudly called him to come sell him meat. And the omnet passed. I walked back home. It took several yrs later, and piecing info from different memories in my childhood to remember this event that could have turned ugly. Well, I went to high school and in Form 2, there was a girl from Migori in my class. One term, she just never came back to school from holidays. We wondered if it was school fees. Several yrs later I am in college, practical attachment in Kisumu. I am about to enter the gate of the firm I taking the internship when I see this girl/young woman walking towards me from Kibuye market and she looks familiar. But I can't remember from where. She looks tired, like shes a young exhausted mother. She's carrying stuff on her head, she has a baby on her back, I think she was pregnant too. But she looked too familiar, even under the worn out exhausted expression. She didn't look at me or meet my eyes. She passed me slowly like a stranger and continued on her way. I wondered who she was, later on my mind clicked. She was that girl in form 2. I remember well coz she was one of those very dark skinned well rounded African beauties. What happened to her? She walked passed towards the infamous Obunga slums. In Kisumu. Now when I look back, I realise I was one of the lucky ones. It's not because I was a careful, righteous, wise, or even well sheltered girl that I didn't engage in teenage sex or get pregnant then. I was just lucky. I have horrendous memories of seeing young girls who several years behind me in primary school pregnant. I was in college then and coming home for holidays. I was walking along the road when I saw a familiar face - but this tiny petite young girl had a protruding stomach. Who made her pregnant??? Men, leave young girls alone. Let them finish school lease. If you want sex, there are sex workers. There are even grown women willing to be your Mpango wa Kando. Willing to cohabitate, willing to be a second wife, willing to do one night stands and walk away no strings attached. Just leave young girls alone. Please. Just leave them alone. The teenage pregnancy crisis in Kenya is just soo bad. Leave these girls alone, please. And go get your sexual needs met elsewhere with a grown woman who at least knows what she is up against.

I hope these beautiful girls apart from the wonderful contributions given, can be mentored by women of purpose in their desired field of study/interests. All seeds must be nurtured to flower.

May God open greater doors for this girls, so they don’t see themselves as failures because of their mistakes. They need moral, mental, financial and every kind of support. May God bless my hands so I can extend my help to the less fortunate. I thank Tuko and Tuko family for how they’ve been coming through for those in need. Lynn and Kevin, God bless you . Naomi and Becky, don’t get over excited and forget where you coming from, focus, be disciplined, see value in yourselves and make us proud😍😍😍

As a society we need to help and accommodate those who have already found themselves in this kind of situation. At the same time we need to develop strategies to prevent further occurrence and surge in teenage pregnancy.
