And now a (very late) review of the latest from Foo Fighters, "But Here We Are". Again, apologies this one is so late, but I figured y'all would probably want to see the Curse of the Best New Artist Grammy (1995 - 1999) first and I figured I'd get THAT done before going into this one.
But still, check it out! This was an interesting one.

====================
But Here We Are is the eleventh studio album by American rock band Foo Fighters, released on June 2, 2023. Produced by Greg Kurstin and the band itself, it is their first studio album since the death of their longtime drummer, Taylor Hawkins, in March 2022. Frontman Dave Grohl performed and recorded the entirety of the album's drum tracks in Hawkins' absence. Four singles, "Rescued", "Under You", "Show Me How" and "The Teacher" were released ahead of the album, while drummer Josh Freese was announced as Hawkins' replacement for touring after its release.
Background
As early as mid-2021, Dave Grohl had already been planning for a follow up album to Medicine at Midnight (2021).[7] Grohl noted that each album the band records is a response to the prior one, and in response to Medicine at Midnight, he was considering writing "an insane prog-rock record".[7] Grohl had not even started writing said material, as the band was still focusing on touring in support of Medicine at Midnight.[7] Despite this, all plans were later abruptly cancelled after longtime drummer, Taylor Hawkins, unexpectedly died in March 2022.[8] The band cancelled everything planned for the rest of the year, largely going quiet and leaving their future uncertain. In December 2022, a statement was released confirming that Foo Fighters would continue, but that they were "going to be a different band going forward".[9]
Rumors of a new album arose in February 2023, when radio DJ Chris Moyles on the UK's Radio X casually mentioned a new album to be released in March.[10] Moyles would later apologize for speaking out of turn on the subject, but refused to clarify his comments.[11] The album was later officially announced on April 19, 2023, alongside its official title, But Here We Are.[2][12] At the time of the album's announcement, a replacement for Hawkins had still not been publicly disclosed.[13] It was later disclosed that Grohl performed the drums on the album, his first drumming credit on a Foo Fighters studio album since 2005.[14]
Recording and themes
The album is the third collaboration with producer Greg Kurstin, following Medicine at Midnight (2021) and Concrete and Gold (2017).[15] The band described the album's sound as "sonically channeling the naivete of Foo Fighters' 1995 debut album, informed by decades of maturity and depth" while lyrically exploring "a brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything Foo Fighters have endured recently [...] 10 songs that run the emotional gamut from rage and sorrow to serenity and acceptance, and myriad points in between."[16] The album was also described as "the first chapter of the band's new life".[13] Lyrically, the album explores Grohl coming to terms with not only Hawkins' death, but his mother, Virginia, who also died at an undisclosed-to-the-public time in 2022.[17] "Under You" released as the album's second single, has been described as melodic punk.[18]

The two closing tracks of the album “The Teacher” and “Rest” they’re like… …I don’t know how anyone couldn’t get through them without having goosebumps or shedding tears.

Definitely! I'd also add "Under You" to the most emotionally cathartic and chilling highlights of the album as well. I've heard it will be the second radio single and it definitely should be.

As a huge foos fan this album is what I've been waiting for a decade/decades. I just wish it didn't take what it did to inspire its creation

I remember that morning when me and my father found out about Taylor Hawkins and his death. We truly felt a stab in our hearts, knowing what Dave had already been though with Kurt Cobain. Fast forward, I couldn't even believe it the first few times that I was told about Virgina's passing. Then, when I find out about the Foo fighters making a new album, I couldn't help but worry for Dave. Was this a contact obligation or something? Bless Dave for doing what he wanted to do in memory of his loved ones. I hope this helps him on his journey through grief. Which, never ends by the way. It's a lifetime you have to live without your loved ones. Here's to Dave, hopefully finding peace in this awful time of loss.

Yeah, me too. I'll be honest: when "Rescued" was released as the lead single.............I was very underwhelmed and thought "..............that's it?". It was in my opinion one of the most mid tracks they've ever released as a single. Much to my relief, though, the entire album is superior to "Rescued", and "Rescued" was never a bad track to begin with, just an overly pedestrian and safe one.

While I didn't find much wrong with the first single Rescued, I was looking for more emotionally raw and honest material from a band I hadn't seen that from since Wasting Light. The back end of the album MORE than delivered. Rest is definitely their first song to make me teary eyed, and while I enjoy all of The Teacher I found myself most attached to the last three or four minutes.

Yeah, I honestly was very underwhelmed when I heard "Rescued". I thought, "..............that's it?". I didn't have high hopes for the album if that was intended to be indicative of the album as a whole with how pedestrian and mid it sounded. The rest of the album delivered in a big way, most reassuringly.

I've commented similar on other reviews and in other places, but I am glad that this is a "back to basics" record, but sad about the circumstances that it took to get there. I have liked everything the band has done, but they're a band that didn't need to doing gimmicks to make records.

outstanding and hard-hitting album, i can already see it becoming a classic. easily their best since the immaculate Wasting Light! amazing how a band that's already released so many albums can still deliver so much substance and raw emotion. Taylor would be proud ❤

What stood out to me was the chaotic build-up at the end of The Teacher which suddenly drops out with the lead into Rest, it feels so emotionally devastating. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as the first FF album I have listened to all the way through.

I’ve been playing this album repeatedly over the past two weeks. My favorite (and least favorite) tracks change nearly every listen, with each new spin revealing layers to these tracks. The Foo Fighters haven’t released a truly front to back masterpiece (in MY opinion), but this album may have come the closest. It’s catchy, impactful, well-written and incredibly sharp. The ending of the record, the one-two punch of “The Teacher”/“Rest” is **powerful**, “Under You” takes the 90’s sound of the band and informs it with a compelling sense of pathos, and “Show Me How” is instantly one of their best tracks, a beautiful display of Dave’s (and Violet’s) talents. I agree wholeheartedly with this review. This is a must-listen. And I mean.. listen to it a lot. This is some amazing art.

The Foo Fighters have long resonated with me much like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have long resonated with me: they may never be among the more poetic or challenging bands out there.............but one thing you can always count on them doing is steadily writing and recording songs that are honest, emotionally lived in and effortlessly relatable without wasting a single word. They truly are to this generation what Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were to the preceding generation: and that's why they are as beloved and serve as a large part to the emotional soundtrack of countless lives. This is by far their best album since "Wasting Light": another album I felt followed a period of relative complacency but shone with a renewed sense of urgency and hunger that carried it over the moon.

I personally am loving this album as well. I think what you’re getting at is that the band on the last couple of records were trying to be slick and polished and chase weird experiments which were fine but felt out of character. This is a straight up modern rock record, and feels natural, sincere, and genuine. Plus the lyrics are aching and pure. Great record.

@Crash Thompson, you nailed it! I have listed and read almost all reviews and you are the one that truly voiced it better than anyone. Medicine at Midnight, Concrete And Gold lost me. With the addition of the backup singers came a loss of raw edginess that I loved the Foos for. They are back.....and here to stay.

I honestly hated this album on first listen. I wasn't really paying much attention to it at the time. But when I actually listened to it again actively paying attention to it I enjoyed it a lot more. I still have some problems with it, namely how mid tempo all the songs are, the album really could have used some more up tempo songs to break things up a bit and help the pacing because yeah the album does suffer a bit from padding. The teacher really didn't need to be 10mins, they could've easily cut 2mins off and it would've been much better. I do also think the lyrics at times can be a bit repetitive and cliche, and I feel like they can be a little bit too vague at points being simultaneously about everything and nothing and coming off as a break up song at times. I also think that the music is way too flat in dynamics, like there is very little dynamic range here so it kinda adds to the samey feel of the songs. And then there are moments such as the wall of distortion in rest that honestly ruin the track for me, I get what they were going for I really do, but I think there was a better way of achieving it that would have been less jarring and needlessly abrasive, either they could have toned down the distortion or they could have opted more for it coming in and out as more of an ambient flourish. I think I would have preferred it if the song had stayed as just guitar and vocals. Still a good album overall, and definitely the best thing they've done since wasting light.

To me, the albums people complain about having a lack of energy usually make up for it in stronger lyrics (sonic highways has their most interesting lyrical development.) Whereas Wasting light has their weakest lyrical development but their stronger sound. This does kinda keep the lyrical motifs simple, but it feels much stronger and more personal. So I think this has the sound and does what it needs to accomplish to express the emotions correctly. So I would listen to this over wasting light any day. But aside from Concrete and gold being a dud, their other recent albums are better than snobbish critics give them credit for.

Man, this album dropped at the same time as a new Ben Folds album. It was an emotional day for me. I agree with you about the last couple albums. There’s some fantastic songs on them, but Wasting Light is fucking perfect, so it’s hard to compare. This was a welcome return to form. It still hurts to hear it and know Taylor’s gone, and if they come back here on tour, it’s gonna *really* hurt, but I’m excited to see more from them.

@Crash Thompson Well yes to everything said here...although that Dream Widow project though was a massive fucking banger and its a shame it didn't take off given it came out quite literally hours before Taylor's passing! For that reason it's been totally slept on! Also guess I'll have to wait until FIMI for your thoughts on the new QOTSA then! Cheers

You shouldn't have to EQ the highs off the songs for them to sound decent. Apparently that wasn't the case with the last two songs in that album, so I have no idea if it was an intentional choice.
@eliasmg9144
@eliasmg9144 Жыл бұрын
I'd say it was intentional, the production gives it a kind of shoegaze sound imo, and not just the last two songs, Show Me How is a good example for me

I like the last two records, I think what was going on is that they *didn’t* have anything to prove, they were happy and content so they went experimental. And I like that they were in that spot. With this record I think they did have something to prove, probably more to themselves given the situation. And I don’t love the cliche that adversity creates the best art, especially with the Foos that were mostly about having a good time. But… it did here, maybe my favourite record of theirs.

The last good album before this was Wasting Light. And they were celebrating their story in that time. This album is great because it celebrates their survival through everything. Especially Dave's story of resilience and survival. For me, Concrete and Gold, Medicine at Midnight, Dee Gees and Dream Widow were things they did just for fun. Nothing as dense as The Pretender, My Hero, Everlong or I'll Stick Around, but not as bad as people think. That said, First Album is still the greatest of all time, for having that element of surprise. But this album has potential to be one of the greatest albums of theirs in the long run. A lot of growers in there.
