Since nobody has done this comment so far (that I'm aware of), I will. Here's how the verdicts of this series of videos are so far: NOT CURSED Mariah Carey (1991) Toni Braxton (1994) Sheryl Crow (1995) Christina Aguilera (2000) Shelby Lynne (2001) Alicia Keys (2002) Norah Jones (2003) SORTA/MAYBE/KINDA CURSED Marc Cohn (1992) LeAnn Rymes (1997) Paula Cole (1998) Evanescence (2004) CURSED Milli Vanilli (1990) Arrested Development (1993) Hootie & the Blowfish (1996) Lauryn Hill (1999) On a side note, while I liked the video overall as per usual, I'm not really a fan of one of the changes done to the series' structure in this video. While the 'Should They Have?' section was always redundant and should have been merged with the 'Who Won?' section from the start, I'm not really a fan of the other nominees being discussed first, before the winner is revealed. I thought that section worked better in the previous videos (when it was titled 'Who Else Was Nominated?' rather than just 'Who Was Nominated?'), where it was discussed AFTER the winner was revealed - it felt a lot more like it was part of the analysis about the winner, by comparing them (or at least, them in that time period) to who they were up against and, by extension, help provide some of the context as to whether or not the win was even deserved in the first place. Here, however, because we don't know the winner until after we've got the other contenders of the way, the section about the other nominees feels more like its own thing, and it leads to a slightly more confusing structure where, at times, it was easy to forget that the actual discussion of this video was about the winner (and specifically, whether or not they were 'cursed' after winning) and not about the category as a whole. This is just a nitpick, of course, but it kept bugging me every time it happened.

That nimrod section was the most pleasing thing I’ve saved heard. You were right on the money. It’s my favourite album by them and you pretty much hit the nail on the head why. Also Good #1 choice in Warning! Punk is going against the norm and what did green day do on warning? Go against the norm and play more acoustic songs. It pays off as arguably their most creative and one of their best albums.

I think Weezer tapped the Rejects in hopes that they might write something that would appeal to a younger crowd. Weezer's brand of peppy alt rock was decidedly out of place among all the Nickelbacks, Evanescences, and My Chemical Romanceses of the time, and Weezer were way too old to pull off Blink-182-style snotty, toiler humor-laden pop punk, so they went for a more heartfelt strain of melodic rock. Ok, that makes sense to me. Tapping Lil Wayne and Germaine Dupree on the other hand… like, I don't think 50Cent and Lil Wayne's fans would enjoy this. I don't see how anyone who's ever liked a Weezer song could like this, in fact.

These albums are good modern rock albums, but shit classic rock albums. Imagine hearing Uno right after Insomniac, you cannot compare them. I think of the songs we’re condensed into one album it would be better but still be one of the worst Green day albums.

When I saw that tab, man… wow. Earth Crisis-levels of laziness there, man. But hell, Earth Crisis is a punk band; if they weren't singing about killing drug dealers/users, I'd give them a pass for getting away with not only stealing a riff from fucking Slayer but also playing 90% of the song without fretting any notes. Godsmack on the other hand… I thought the whole point of hard rock guitar-playing was showing off how good you are at the guitar. What the hell are you doing, man?

As bad as it is to talk about Madness in America, it's not as bad as explaining how The Specials did in the US. And it can get worse if you find out alongside how McFly, Atomic Kitten, S Club 7, Sugababes, Kaiser Chiefs, pre-2013 Arctic Monkeys, or Dizzee Rascal did, among likely many, many others

I remember liking #1 as a kid but I never would've thought about the lyrics. I still quite like You Found Me and Over My Head though. Also when it comes to Buckcherry, Crazy Bitch is mostly just really dumb to me, but I have nostalgia for Sorry from it being on one of the many Kidz Bop albums I owned. The video of the bride walking down the aisle to CB is great though.

grammys made the right choice on Alicia Keys. Linkin Park blows. Also, I don't know if I'd really call Fallen nu metal. And even if it was, nu metal did NOT get a shot in the arm, 2004 was the year nu metal died for good until the Chinese Concentration Camp psy-op known as tiktok brought it back. 2004 people either moved on the metalcore, or buttrock. Also, Fallen is diamond. Yeah, diamond. I bet a lot of uncursed bands wish they had a diamond record. And now that I think of it, Come Away With Me is diamond too.

As a major dance guy and as someone who thinks Guetta's first album is for the most part actually pretty good, yeah that cover is awful lol. It makes perfect sense why every other album of his since has had him on the cover. Also I know debut albums are what count here but in Paul Oakenfold's case, he was likely already well-known in the scene well before that album, although more from his DJing than original productions, which tended to be all over the place. Not saying it's wrong, it just felt weird to me. Granted, that might also be because the only thing he's known for in the general public in America is Starry Eyed Surprise, RIP Shifty, which I don't even like. I can't imagine anybody at the Grammys had heard of Guetta at all at that point, and was quite surprised to see it brought up at all even though it would count, although there were multiple other non-dance examples of that too.

I hate that “Like Apollo / Your Creed, my mission / You’re going down for the count / I count down, ignition” is maybe the cleverest turn of phrase I’ve ever heard in my life, and it’s a childish sex rhyme in a song where the last 40 seconds is gagging sounds, a man angrily yelling SUCK IT over and over, and then racism.

Maybe the reason why the person who reviewed Something to Write Home About didn't use the word emo is because it sounds nothing like the kind of music that was being called emo at the time? It's a very polished synth-heavy rock album, and according to interviews the band was being influenced by Radiohead and Wilco just as much as they were Jimmy Eat World. And anyway, people get too hung up on genre stuff. "Emo" has always been a pretty poor descriptor for music anyway, all (or at least all good) music is emotional. And anyway, influencewise most of the '80s and '90s bands are post-hardcore or post-punk, and the aughts stuff is mostly just what happens when pop punk gets a goth makeover.

@54:41 As a musician/self-producer who just recently bought a 7 string guitar, a 5 string bass, and has already learned 4 Korn songs in the span of a week because the nu-metal renaissance has infected me hardcore, I can confirm that this renaissance is in full swing. I love so much of it, both the nostalgic things that gripped me as a kid (I'm a late millennial) to some of the newer bands. Tallah is great, Chat Pile rips and they're basically like the modern torch carriers; they're the band that grabs the same audience Korn would have grabbed in their hay day, and the more post-grunge adjacent zoomer gaze bands like Nothing or cursetheknife are awesome too. It's like early Deftones but dreamier. I'm actually super into modern day Helmet now too. Their old stuff is still essential but some of their later albums post comeback (Page Hamilton being the only original member) kick a lot of ass. "Seeing Eye Dog" and "Dead To The World" are still on heavy rotation for me. I haven't listened to "LEFT" yet.

Generator is like the Deep Space Nine of Bad Religion albums. It's like, one of the top 3 for every fan but I could understand a newcomer being completely lost. I always recommend Empire to metalheads and it's been a mostly successful way of getting them into the band. Helps if they're into Avenged Sevenfold.

I was pretty young when I got into BR, aside from a few songs I'd picked up from AMVs I hadn't listened to them a whole lot when I downloaded their entire discography and played it on shuffle. I remember when one of these songs would come up I'd just think, "Huh, that one sounds strange," but never disliked one. I didn't know anything about genres were so it just kinda cemented itself as part of the band's history along with the rest of it. I'm actually a big fan of Greg Graffin's solo alt-country/folksy stuff, that same intellect he brings to Bad Religion with a more somber, melancholic tone that you get a taste of in Into the Unknown. I swear these guys could make me like any genre.

Also: with regards to Sean Paul in 2004, I get how it just seems like another Sisqo head-scratcher on the surface...................but there's no denying his lasting influence and legacy these past two decades. I dare say he's remained more culturally relevant long-term than Evanescence overall even despite "Bring Me To Life" still getting gold catalog airplay like mad. So more power to the lyrically and vocally unintelligibly charming one! XD I think I agree with the "Kinda Cursed" verdict on Evanescence for that matter. I think the main thing that cursed them (well, Amy Lee basically, let's be honest about that, hahahaha!)............is album development hell and just allowing themselves to become irrelevant because of that.

It's beyond surreal to me that Avril Lavigne's debut album ("Let Go") is somehow also STILL her most mature album to date, hahahaha! Much like Coldplay were at their most mature with their first two albums (I enjoy much of their later work for the record, I'm just saying they sounded at their most oldest and experienced on their first two albums) and have reverse-aged from there, Avril Lavigne has done the same between "Girlfriend", whatever "Hello Kitty" was and her last MGK-esque album, hahaha!
