Many deer and turkey hunters will be putting in food plots this month. The majority of these plots will be under an acre in size. A lot of advice is out there on what to plant in food plots, but a small percentage of that information deals with these small food plots. With the lack of information deer hunters resort to buying a cheap throw and grow style food plot bag on the shelves of sporting goods store. Most of these bags contain a mix of species that are no better than the weeds you will be combating in the plot. This year make a good decision with your food plots and go with the best species for small food plots.
The best species for small food plots is white clover (Ladino or Durana). Either Ladino or its small leafed, but more aggressive spreading cousin Durana clover, are the king of small food plots. They are shade tolerant, heavy browse tolerant, extremely attractive, and are easy to establish. These are all the requirements a small food plot species needs, and it excels far above all of these. With little work and preparation these plots can be established as kill plots in small clearings, ground exposed on a recently open canopy, or on the edges of larger crop fields. Clover is one of the first food plot species to sprout and be full by spring time turkey hunting, and is available through the majority of deer hunting season except the late season months. The attributes make white clover an unbeatable species for small food plots.

I prefer mowing over spraying simply because of the abundant amount of Nitrogen that gets put in the ground everytime I mow. Especially clover, it grows back so thick that most of the time after mowing a couple times it will choke out a lot of unwanted grasses/broadleaf weeds so I really let clover kinda feed itself with the Nitrogen it produces. I understand if it's not accessible that herbicide is the way to go but I've even took my weed eater in to cut a small kill plot down. Frost seeding clover is a great way to get a jump on that plot too. I live in Southern Indiana also. This past April it was snowing but before the snow could melt I frost seeded 1.5 acres and it looks awesome, especially after hitting it with some PlotBoost the first chance I got. Good video tho'. Thanks

Red clover is what I use. White clover can be round up tolerant and hard to get rid of if planting other plants. Works get for a just a clover plot though.

Do you recommend not breaking soil with a disc or tiller before spreading soil?.

Don't walk into your spray, walk away from it and make sure the spray is blowing away from you if you want to grow old... and and I hope your swampers are not your hunting boots.

It’s a free country. If he wants to use a legal product he has the right to do so. PPE is a good idea and recommended in the product directions. Americans have choices.

Glyphosate has been or will be banned in at least 10 jurisdictions, including Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam, and at least 15 additional countries restrict its use. The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer formally classifies glyphosate as a “probable carcinogen.” Jul 13, 2020

@@illuminati_killr9322 thank you for your comments, just waiting for it to be banned in USA..IT probably already would have but the last 30?years we have spent millions$$$$ in the developing genetically altered seeds making them Roundup tolerant, a major blow to agriculture industry!

Holy shyt, I can't believe it, he goes through all the pain of setting this all up for the perfect kill zone but then proceeds to spray a well-known Carcinogen without wearing a mask or gloves?? WTF did I just see? Dude needs to get educated on products he's using before spraying them. On our farm we grew everything organically(Hay, grains, veggies beef chickens), my best friends farm only 1 mile away used only chemicals to feed and weed. within 25 years all the girls had major health issues(Lupus), the mother got breast cancer and died. To this day I still think it's because their homestead was surrounded by then land which at various times was being sprayed by chemicals and in those days we didnt wear masks at all nor wear gloves..but now the science is out and the chemicals ae bad for you big time!

your doing your plot wrong you can have a very diverse small plot, plant the first 5 yards in a rye or oat, let that establish until it hits about 6 inches, plant your clover or what ever you choose once you outer ring established, feather cut or hinge cut, bring down the natural browse, stump some bigger trees and let their shoots grow out and bam put a water source in and you have a honey home on an acre

So why hunt if you are going to use all these chemicals, I hunt because i want good real organic meat. (Yes i know the deer get into poison fields like yours, but i do my best to be organic!)
