Swedes have been eating pea soup and pancakes.. Attested since at least the 1300's. The military has been serving it that way ever since then.. sometimes with bits of salty pork in it.. It was cheap.. easy to bring along.. (All you needed to procure was water) And good for the soldiers. I have to take Ludwigs side on this.. That is a type of thin pancake.. A crêpe is thinner and has more eggs in the batter..Making it easier to fill without ripping.. What americans call pancakes.. Are actually originally called "flap jacks". The vernacular has changed over the years.. getting the two mixed up.

Just for info, there are quite a lot of Swedes, including myself, who don’t fancy fishy food such as kaviar or pickled herring for breakfast. Common to have here is also a bowl of yoghurt with or without musli, a soft open sandwich, toasted or not, with whatever you like on top. I prefer butter and occasionally a bit of orange marmelade. Coffee, tea or hot chocolate is common to drink and maybe a glass of orange juice or a fruit. Some slice their fruit and add it to the yoghurt bowl. Some like to have a bowl of oatmeal with milk or a traditional English breakfast which is also popular here in Sweden, often stripped down to only bacon and eggs. A lot of people I know love lingonberry jam on pancakes. It has a slight bitter taste which I think gives the pancakes more of an adult flavour, compared to overly sweet strawberry jams and such which kids usually prefer. I guess Swedes are divided when it comes to jam preference on pancakes. Due to this bitterness lingonberry jam is often used as a condiment to various savory dishes too such as meatballs. I refuse to even go near Surströmming so even Swedes sometimes find those downright nasty. Some love it, some hate it.

Norwegian, Systembolaget = Vinmonopolet. Ertesuppe og pannekaker, was for fridays when I grew up (in the 60's - 70's). Today, pancakes with strawberry jam (the BEST one is from Rema 1000) and sourcreme, and I make it when I feel for it. The peasoup, nah, not in my home. Knekkebrød with the norwegian version of Kalles, Mills Kaviar, is still a staple in my home. In the mid-80's, when I was a UN-soldier in Lebanon, when we got Knekkebrød, kaviar and brown cheese (brun ost), then it was a party! 😅

Surströmming was created during a salt shortage in sweden, i think it was usually dried in salt (like you do with salt cod for exmple. Pre refridgeration) But when you dont use as much salt, it starts a fermentation process instead!

Ärtsoppa/peasoup is usually not eaten as portraid for breakfast. usually with plain mustard or coarse mustard on the side of the plate depending on taste. not ontop. Also pickled herring is not a staple breakfast. However filmjök with musli or corn flaskes/porridge, a boiled egg with salt or kaviar. and sandwich of some kind, especielly knäckebröd. Usually pickled herring in the variations there of, are usually for special occasions. such as x-mas, easter etc. That said in hotels there are more common to find pickled herring then in most swedish homes.

Ärtsoppa(peasoup) is known in the military as "machinegun gruel" and has been a staple food for the military for centuries. I prefer using a stronger mustard for peasoup, that way the soup won't get cold. Ägg, Kaviar & knäckebröd is a common breakfast but not everyday, you'll get sick of it after a while, try liverpaste + picklad cucumbers(sliced or chewed [Boston-gurka]) on knäckebröd or simple cheese (sliced with the norwegian invention the cheese slicer), ham or salami. Good addons are for these are cheese + banana, cheese + jam, onions goes well on salami and on all three, bell peppers or tomatoes is nice. Herring is not a typical breakfast food, makrill (in tomatosauce) is probably more my cup of tea. Don't drink Swedish coffe after 15:00 or you might have trouble sleeping until midnight.

I would encourage people to try making chokladbollar at home, I find them much tastier and quite different from massproduced ones. I like to eat them after they have properly "set" in the fridge and I always roll them in pärlsocker and not coconut since I enjoy the contrasting crunchy texture. I usually add in a bit more oat as well since I enjoy the flavour but if it's your first time making them be careful so you don't end up with a crumbly mess although that can be fixed with a tiny splash of water or coffee or a some softened butter. You should also be able to see the oats in there so just mix it until it comes together and they can hold a ball shape but the oats shouldn't be disintegrated. I mean if you don't think you'll like bits of oats in there just mix until they are disintegrated, they will still be delicious. Damn it, now I want to eat chokladbollar...

It's important to note that while coverage is available in urban areas, the reliability of signal reception may be limited in sea regions due to the nature of the network infrastructure.

In the United States, alcohol sales regulations vary by location. Here in Maryland, current law restricts the sale to stand-alone, non-chain stores, with licensing restricted to Maryland residents. So no beer or wine at the grocery. ☹️ When we were stationed in Louisiana twenty years ago, you couldn't buy alcohol on Sunday. We got around that by going onto the military base where local laws didn't apply.

Not quite true - I am 70 years old and have had coffee first thing in the morning only twice in my life. An increasing amount of Swedes prefer to start the day with tea instead of coffee - it's a choice between waking your stomach up by kicking it (coffee) or caressing it (tea). Furthermore, many Swedes prefer hot chocolate in the morning, along with cheese on crisp bread. The choice is yours! Finally - very few Swedes have pickled herring for breakfast - I really cannot recall ever seen anyone eating it first thing in the morning.

Bulle i bulle is just a gimmick; its been around a few years; its not a swedish tradition, its not mainstream in anyway; its simply something most people think is disgusting. Also mustard in pea-soup is great; but you cant have Johnnys Sötstarka mustard?! It should be REAL mustard (you wouldnt need as much, also the sweetness urk) , also, you need some fläsk el falukorv in the peasoup for it to really shine.

The reason we eat pea soup is because the housemaids had Fridays was all housemaids day off. Preparing the soup a day ahead will only benefit the taste of it. So it was prepared Wednesday, and after it was served at Thursday the weekend started for the servants. If you prepare your soup it is supposed to contain salted pork ham. Btw... Ask your boyfriend what the not so political correct name of your Swedish chocolate ball is.
