Foodies, sea salt, and your thyroid
Hypothyroidism is a condition that comes up much too often nowadays - but this wasn’t the case 40-50 years ago. Why? In this video, Dr. Gundry dives deeper into the causes behind this "mini-epidemic."
You’ll be surprised to learn which “health” foods are contributing to this problem. Luckily, you’ll also learn some very simple tricks to support a healthy thyroid- it’ll be as easy as putting salt on your food (literally).
So if you’re looking for the most updated information about thyroid health, make sure to watch this episode of Closer Look from Dr. Steven Gundry MD!

I haven't and never will be without IODIZED salt. I had a doctor in my early twenties explained the importance of iodine in salt. I'm now in my early sixties and feel that was one piece of valuable information back then.

You are correct! They’ve taken it out of bread and milk so the only thing we have now is salt! It’s a shame how many people don’t know just how important iodine is.

You should throw away your precious "IODIZED" salt 🧂 and get Redmond's Real salt that has REAL IODINE in it along with all the trace minerals your body needs. That garbage iodized salt only has sodium, chloride and a tiny bit of potassium iodide which is really hard on your body...not to mention the anti-caking powder they put in it that often has aluminum in it which is known to cause alzheimer's disease.

The adding of iodine to salt is largely arbitrary. You can get it in seafood, sea vegetables, or supplement it with things like Lugols. In the process you will be getting both better quality salt, and iodine.

Thanks for bringing this up. After my first son I gain 40 pounds and I’ve lost only 20. I struggle with breast-feeding, I could’ve lose the weight, I had baby blues which is normal and I felt inflame. After months I realized my thyroid was off. Bought a book called Thyroid Diet by Mary J Shomon and learned a lot from it. I’ve been following you and I’ve been following all other eating life styles and my recovery with baby number two has been so much different (Better: I can breast-feed I lost all the weight, I feel happy I don’t feel baby blues I don’t feel overwhelmed etc.)

On graves disease it characterize by an over production of thyroid hormone which make you feel hyper, palpitations, weight loss, trouble sleeping, medication of Choice propylthiouracil which block in some way the over production of thyroid hormone, if your case is too severe you may end up getting your thyroid removed in which case you will have to take meds for life including calcium phosphorus plus thyroxine......ca and phosphorus bc ur parathyroid gland will b removed also together with ur thyroid bc it is attached to the thyroid....finaly graves disease can cause exophthalmos....hope this helps....roy RN

Thank you for sharing all your wonderful video's. Cutting way. back on cooked cruciferous veggies, my fav, will be super hard. I do know that raw kale is a culprit as it caused me to have one of the worst panic attacks in my life. You asked what we would like to hear about on future videos and personally I would love more information about those with autoimmune issues and how to reduce inflammation and increase fatigue. Even though my autoimmune markers are not showing up, I cannot seem to improve these areas. I remember when I was on PP Keto, I felt totally awesome. Then I lost too much weight and started adding in Lectin-free Resistant Starches and also almond flour. I ended up sicker than I have ever been and now beginning to come around after 18 months. Thank you so much Dr. Gundry. See you in October!

Watch dr. Berg on KZfaq he is absolutely amazing & explains about iodine deficiency, how important vitamin a is and how lack of causes night blindness and other eye issues. Sugar is the root of all evil so starting there, checking for insulin resistance and reversing diabetes (keto), so when one problem starts another begins, iodine deficiency messes up your thyroid so then you begin having other issues. ❤️

Or fruits. And only locally and seasonally and organic fruits and vegetables. But don't over do them either because fruit is mitochondria poison and cruciferous hurt your thyroid and other vegetables have oxalates, other disrupt your hormones, and all have fiber which your gut "buddies" love but be careful you do have buddies and not just feeding parasites, plus fiber makes you feel bloated and makes your pop supersized... You know what, go carnivore.

It would be great if someone made an episode on hyperthyroidism with the content of how long one should live without iodine and when it would be appropriate to start taking iodine again. Or that there are substitutes instead of iodine. I also struggle with it every day and accidentally ingest a little iodine somewhere and immediately have another attack in which I lose all my muscle mass and strength, but in one it happens to me. I got my hyperthyroidism from skiing for 250 days and overdosing on kelp supplements.

Thanks Dr! Actually there's much more going on with thyroid health that is poorly understood these days, especially among the medical community. I was having serious energy issues and my doc tested my thyroid .. poorly. He used what is called a cascade test which is a test that first tests for tsh levels. Then if tsh is out of line they proceed to to T3 and T4. In my case tsh was fine. My doc also tested for hashimotos at my request. It came back with no antibodies for hashimotos, which was good. About 3 weeks later I was browsing around in the drug store and bought some tincture of iodine. With tincture of iodine you can paint a square on your skin and see how fast your skin absorbs the iodine. In normal people it should take 12 hours or more. Mine was gone in 5 hours. I tested again and again because there is no way I could be iodine deficient. I have taken a supplement with 1 mg of iodine every day for over 10 years! But you know what? It WAS right. Turns out that there are a lot of molecules that are very similar to iodine (bromides), and they can literally block up your cell receptors leading to a lack of cellular iodine. It has taken almost a year but I am now pretty much over it. How did I do it? I mix of iodine & iodide, 12.5 mg in total. During the course of my treatment I did get cherry angiomas from release of the bromides but I starting feeling like a million bucks. So is my issue isolated? I don't think so at all. In fact all of my direct relatives also have this same issue. So if you want to know what I am interested in here's a topic for you. I could tell you many details of my treatment period and symptoms you can look for to tell if you might have this problem. BTW, while iodine was put in salt and still is today the REAL iodine shortage occurred around 1973 when the FDA stopped requiring bakers to put iodine in dough. What do they use today in place of iodine? A bromide of course! BTW, bromides are flourides, fire retardants like you might find in furniture and clothing, and chlorine. All of this is known at a secondary level. The researcher that developed the blood test for iodine levels knows it, for instance, but my doctor who I class as normally pretty open minded, just rolled his eyes at me when I explained it all. In fact that would be another good topic for you .. how long does it take "modern" medicine to change it's approaches and theories about any particular illness issue? I'm betting it's right around 15 years. Thanks again, and if you want a discussion just look me up!

Practice intermittent fasting every day between 16 & 18 hours, that doesn't leave much time to take the many supplements and vitamins I take each day. A lot of these supplements would be classified as anti-oxidants; what I would like to know is should supplements and vitamins be taken when the fasted state is broker or can they be taken in a fasted state? When is the best time to take supplements like Berberine, Quercetin, Pterostilbene, and PQQ? When is the best time to take vitamins C, B's, D and K. Would like to hear you talk about when to take supplements, vitamins and which ones should be taken together to make sure you get maximum results. Thanks for all the great information you provide!
