Former Supertramp lead singer and co-founder Roger Hodgson wrote and composed this song by himself. He has talked about how when he composed it he always saw it being played with an orchestra. So, seeing it with an orchestra, we are seeing it the way the composer originally intended it. This epic is on the album "Even in the Quietest Moments." Autographed CD at www.rogerhodgsonstore.com.
Roger is currently on Tour, selling out shows all over the globe. Roger performs his songs in a variety of formats so you can see him at an acoustic show, band show or orchestra. I love them all. Info on www.rogerhodgson.com or / rogerhodgson .
Roger Hodgson has been recognized as one of the most gifted composers, songwriters and lyricists of our time. The songs Roger sings that are often referred to as Supertramp songs are songs that Roger wrote and composed alone - that is how he creates music.
Even though Roger and Rick shared writing credit, they each wrote and composed separately with each singing their own respective songs. Roger wrote many of the band's hits while he was still in his teens, before he even met Rick. When Roger was with Supertramp, he would make a demo of the song and bring it to the band for them to learn their parts. Supertramp as a band never wrote and composed together. There were only two songwriters for the band. Roger composed many of the songs that brought Supertramp worldwide acclaim such as Give a Little Bit, Dreamer, Take the Long Way Home, Breakfast in America, School, It's Raining Again, Fool's Overture and so many more. Roger still performs all of the classics and also selections from his several solo albums. There's a Repertoire page on Roger's site where you can read about his songs and how he composed them. bit.ly/1Kfgu0W

See what fans are saying -
"Fool's Overture had everyone mesmerized. The lyrics, sounds, vibe in the room all was magical. Roger had everyone in his hands. An absolutely amazing performance. So much so that as people were leaving, I overheard many say they are already planning to come back next year."
"This performance was jaw dropping. It was like turning the clock back 25 years. Roger's voice was as it was in Supertramp's heyday."

I know this is going to sound so corny - this is the one of the few songs that can lift me from the depths of depression up to the point that life is worth living again. It brings back so many memories of good times with people no longer with us. Where did my life go so quickly - 70 years gone in a flash. Wish I had a second go at it.

My dear departed brother brought home the quietest moments album when it originally came out. I'd be about 11 then, and this track just blew my mind. Fast forward to 2021, I'm 56 now, the aches, pains of growing old have started and this track takes me back vividly to those carefree days. Thanks, brother, you were suddenly taken away from us but we'll meet again.

"Fool's Overture is one of my favorite pieces that I've ever written. It was very magical the way it came together. It was actually three separate pieces of music that I had for a few years and then, one day, they kind of all slotted together in what I think is a magnificent, kind of epic piece of music. I always imagined performing it with an orchestra, so when I did start playing with orchestras back in the '90s, it was such a thrill to play this song. I still get goosebumps to his day every time I get an opportunity perform it with an orchestra." ~Roger Hodgson

I was introduced to Supertramp in the 80' by my brother in law who gave me a couple of his old albums and fell in love with their music but never heard of and thought I never heard fool's overture until very recently when I was in a nostalgic mood and I came across it and 1 section which I remembered clearly but could not quite place it other than a news show I watched. Imagine my surprise when I looked it up and found out it was Canada's W5's theme back in the day.

Fantastic!!! I always thought the marriage of a full orchestra and rock-n-roll was the best in music composition. And those writers, like RH, who can accomplish that are truly the talented ones of our time. We are the lucky ones to be privileged to listen to it and to have the open mind to understand the greatness of such a project.

It happens - personality differrences, musical differences, lives move on with marraige, children etc. Life doesn't stand still. He allowed them to continue the name of Supertramp and it was agreed which writer had claim to which songs, it was also then agreed that the remaining Supertramp didn't perform any of Roger's songs and he wouldn't perform any not written by himself. This was adherred to for a while until audiences dwindled for Supertramp because the vast majority of the better songs were Roger's, the band then broke the agreement and played Roger's songs to bring back ticket sales. To my knowledge, Roger never played any of Rick Davies' songs. He certainly didn't when I saw him in London this year and I've never seen any footage of him doing so. His current band is awesome. Long may they continue. If you get a chance to see them live then do so.You will not be disappointed.

I have such an emotional reaction to this song, because it takes me back to when I was seventeen - sitting alone in my room feeling wounded and unsure about what kind of future, if any, was possible for me. Thank you Roger for so perfectly marking that moment in time for me and making me realize now how far I have come.

Wow… Intense… Supertramp was booed in Vermont I heard… I'm sure the folks there were not ready for such a talent and band as Supertramp… Was this true? I'm not sure I was 12 I think… I'm sure all those who booed are ashamed of themselves… If not, they are just not worthy of quality music!

I've said elsewhere that, in my opinion, Roger Hodgson is one of the greatest musicians and composers of 20th century popular music. This particular piece, though, goes beyond even that. For its sheer artistry, originality, and soul-stirring qualities it stands alongside the likes of "I am the walrus", "Stairway to heaven", and "MacArthur Park".
