In this video I'm going to cover the pros and cons of the foot control steering versus the hand/throttle control on these two Hobie Pro angler kayaks. Both are great options and anyone who gets a Torqeedo, Newport, Evolve etc, needs to consider one of the two options!!

Great video , Miss Kristen I rather foot control in my bass boat too , I like how they raised those seats in the kayaks too , the reason I like is your legs are not straight out no more getting cramped up

I ended up going with Tim Percy’s steering system. For me, being in a PA12, I did not want to sacrifice deck space or rod storage. Easy install, was on the water in the same day. Can’t believe I was gonna go without a steering system. It’s a game changer

I had foot steering on my feel free lure and it was awesome for power fishing banks skinny rivers. I switched to the PA 14 360 and it does stink some times I have to let my bait sink while I adjust but I Loooooove the room I have on the deck. Good trade in my opinion.

I tried foot controls on my rig and did not like them personally. But that may very well be due to my disability. I dont have good muscle control in my legs. I felt i was always over steering and i could not control it at all while standing. I went back to my stick steer with the speed dial on the end of the stick. It just felt smoother and i can prop it up so its right at my hand while standing. I do work the bank a lot under power (running a haswing 65#) but I don t find it much trouble to micro adjust while doing so. I fish a very clear river mostly so i stand a lot sight fishing while cruising the banks.

Can you show an overhead view of the decks to see the set ups & deck spaces, if possible?? Trolling motor on a kayak is super cool for sure, but I know thier not cheap either!!! Maybe for a tournament anglers actually cashing checks they may be more appropriate? I'm on my second Hobie pa12, now the 360. Been fishing from them for 6 year's now. I have no problem peddling it all day I can leave before sun rise & come back at sun set & it doesn't wear me out anymore. So in my mind it would make more sense to put a trolling motor on a less exspensive yak than a pedal drive? Still bad ass set ups!!! Trolling motor just not for me I guess. To each their own.

Debated on add in my 2 cents…this is just my opinion folks. I ENJOY AND SUPPORT KF videos always will. Love what she has brought to kayak fishing. IMO the introduction of motors of kayak, takes away from my belief on what kayak fishing is all about…driving your kayak under your own manpower. Outside of fish finders adding an motor is somewhat takes away from the notion of it. While we’re at it we minus well get drones involved in kayak fishing. Maybe something will be added to grapple the fish out of the water and bring em to your kayak. Lol. I mean where will it stop?! IMO if i want/feel the need for a motor…then I’ll buy a damn bass boat…pretty soon you’ll see bass boats in kayak tournaments. Just my thoughts folks. Much love, support and respect to KF.

Sounds like we need an invention. Foot control connected towards the front center of the hull, and not the front sides. To allow for more rod space. With an ability to turn a tension knob as you would on a baitcaster, for tighter or looser steering sensitivity. Or hydraulic steering because the distance the pedal travels would be half the distance in this case. Hope this makes any sense lol. God bless!

What would be interesting. Is to have a pivoting chair option. That would lock into forty-five degree increments (the advantage of the bass boat is that it can travel on low speed parallel to banks). And at the same time the angler is able to orientate their shoulders. To the direction in which they wish to cast (which could be perpendicular to the bank or edge, or to an angle). The minute that the kayak angler re-orients their chair though. To do that. They lose the option of being able to control steering with feet. The pivoting chair option. Solves some problems, and creates new ones (such as the kayak itself is designed to be more stable when the angler is facing straight ahead). Not hanging sideways over the edge. Having swung one's chair around. To get better casting angles. But having said that. Repetitive strain injury is a real thing (that affects a lot of anglers too). At some stage, the problem will need to get solved for kayak boats. As one get's older. One will start to develop various kinds of repetitive strain injury (cold winds on lakes that run up one's back, are notorious for creating these injuries too). And if one is casting and fishing. Or trying to. At perpendicular or other angles to one's shoulders a lot of the time. It eventually is going to lead to strain to one's posture.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 2 жыл бұрын
The only thing that would defeat that problem. And allow the kayak angler to maintain their straight ahead orientation of the chair. And the boat itself. Whilst moving in parallel to a bank. Is to have some kind of dual motor set-up (front and bank). Of two much smaller battery operated motors. That would nudge the kayak boat a small bit at the front. Then a small bit by the back. So that it could track parallel to a shoreline. Whilst leaving the kayak angler facing directly forward. Able to fish. It would require a sort of drone technology to achieve (in the way they tend to have four propellors). And the power is re-distributed to the four corner propellors I am sure. To allow the software to steer the drone. The control software that was similar for the kayak. Would have to be provided with a couple of GPS points. The kayak angler would set in advance. By selecting two points on a screen. It would enable the software that controlled the propellors then (in the way that a drone works). To keep the kayak moving along a line gradually. At slow speed (while having the kayak oriented at right angles to the direction of movement). Over that distance. Until the journey is completed.
@academicmailbox7798

What would be interesting, is if one could get the kayak to move along a linear pathway. While keeping the kayak itself oriented at forty-five degrees angle. To that pathway (instead of the angler casting directly at perpendicular angles to the shoreline). The angler could cast in advance, at a forty five degree angle. Sort of like those Lipizzaner horses in Europe. Were trained to do those canter or trotting movements. Which kept a specific angle to the path in which they were moving. Who knows? In 2030, some group of futurists might some day invent the Lipizzaner technology for propellor motors. It's a very interesting 'control' propblem. For some engineering minds to wrestle with. They've already solved the problem with drones I would think. Except no one's ever done it for water navigation. The list of bass angling techniques. That require the anglers to operate at some specific casting angle like that. Are numerous. So if the navigation challenges could be solved. Kayak anglers would use whatever solution was out there.

It shows it there on minute 02:00 of the video. When Kristine explains about going along a bank on motor propulsion (and wanting to make a bunch of casts). What you will notice that Kristine does. As it's almost locked into muscle memory at this stage. Is Kristine gestures in a way. That both shoulders are still facing directly forward. Ahead of her. At she imitates the motions. Of making a cast. Using a fishing rod and reel. And the lower thorso area is twisting in that manner. Needed in order to cast in a direction. Different to where one's shoulders are pointing. The advantages that bass boat anglers have. Is they have motor foot control. And at the same time. They do get to orient their body. In a way that is most ergonomically comfortable. To make a perpendicular cast. Or an angled cast. Anyone who is a fly fishing angler, or a river bank angler. Who has done much fishing. Has probably sat through days worth of instruction. About fly casting and fly line management. And it's mostly all about. How to orientate oneself in the most comfortable way. While casting and fishing. In order to gain greater efficiency. Kayak angling by it's definition. Sets up the individual to have incredibly good access to lakes, creeks and waterways. However, it does introduce that difficulty. From the very start (which boat anglers don't have to deal with, and neither do shoreline, or bank anglers). Of twisting oneself at an awkward angle a lot. To make fishing possible.

The big reason, why a pivoting chair won't ever happen. When on thinks about it. Is if the mechanism ever moved and pivoted. Or worse, just went into free swing mode. And would not lock back into place at all. Is that it would be the easiest way possible. To get a very significant wrenching of the back muscles and joints. On any kind of rougher water conditions. Going from point 'A' to point 'B'. Even when not fishing from the kayak at all. Which is why. There will always be permanent fixed chairs in kayaks. If one thinks about it though. Bass boats very frequently have swivel chair components. And I've even seen those chairs and such. On Jon boats for bass fishing. Guys in row boats used for fly fishing. Use swivel chairs a good bit. To fish from. It will never happen in a kayak. One needs the stability.

What it does indicate to me though. Is that for companies like Hobie. There's an opportunity to create a platform. For those of us who are older and less flexible. Where the aperture that was made in the floor of the vessel (to put the 'mirage' drive inside of). When using for manual propulsion. There is an opportunity to create a kayak. That has the same apertures designed into it. That were located somewhere towards the front of the boat. And towards the rear too. A second and a third aperture. Where one could locate a couple of electrical motors. And in that way. Operate the kayak in a way that it inched itself slowly to the side (without exceeding a very low speed limit). Instead of going straight ahead. If one had that sideways motor driven propulsion to one's kayak. It would enable the angler to remain facing forward. And fish ahead of the boat. From a more comfortable seated posture. Than having to do the thing. Of twisting one's thorso around all of the time. Over the course of the day. In order to make side ways and angled casts. From the kayak.
