Torqeedo Foot Control Steering on a Hobie PA14 360

Recently upgraded to the Torqeedo 1103 for my Pro Angler 14 360. The extra power with this motor requires some kind of steering system, so decided to install some foot controls. In this video I will walk you through the steps for installing foot controls to a Hobie Pro Angler.

I haven't seen many issues on the drives lately. My 360 drive is still going strong after the past 2 years.

Josh, have you you had any thoughts of adding Boonedox Landing Gear to this boat?

I have added the Boonedox to multiple kayaks and have not had any issues from my customers. So if installed correctly and kayak is not overloaded, the Boonedox works with great. I would recommend the reinforcements for a little more peace of mind, (You can search my other video and I will show you how I reinforce the Boonedox on the PA14 and it is the same process for the 180 and 360.) I will say that is in the one item I miss having on my PA14. However, being I go through kayaks pretty regular I have yet to install it on my last 2 kayaks.

How are you liking the 1103 in comparison to the 403? Is the gain in power worth the decrease in battery? I'm trying to decide between the 403ac and the 1103. Although you have more power with the 1103 man you just have so much more run time with the 403ac.

I love the 1103 over the 403.. I had the 403a instead of the AC so I didn't notice any major decrease in battery life. 1103 is quieter, about 1mph faster, and helps me get throw vegetation better (this was my main reason for upgrading) Like to say if I am going full speed, the displays says I have around 4-5miles.... once I taper it down it jumps up to 15-20miles. If you can figure out the ideal power (~400-600) is what I have found the best running speed/ power consumption. I do also have a 2nd smaller battery as a back-up I can carry with me if I plan to go further or fishing a tournament. I have also began using the motor while fishing long stretches or in the wind as well so the foot control steering has been great as well.

What was the measurement for when you drilled the holes at the back of the hobie for boat cables

Man this install is a couple years old for me to remember the exact size. I did used the Steering Tube Holders so that made for a bigger hole which was probably around 11/32nds. I would definitely check the size of the tube holder and a couple different drill bits. If you don't use the Tube Holder and just flare out the tube instead your hole will be significantly smaller. What size drill bit did you run for your tubing?

I had to use 11/32s for the Tubing Caps. If I would have melted down the ends like Innovative Sportsman install, I would have used 1/4" bit.

innovative Sportsman melts the ends of their tubing. I wonder if those Hobie caps would fit on the tubing from their kit? Do you know the ID of the cap? I am a little weary drilling into the hull but I have to do it sometime since the motor is sitting in my garage.

The Caps ID is 1/4" and like to say I used a 11/32 bit for the hole in the kayak for the cap. Think the tubing the IS is is a softer tubing as well. The tubing I used is more rigged. I helped a buddy finish installing his kit from IS.

Josh. When you drill in the hull (front near the foot controls), I noticed the cord will pass over the other snap cleats. Will the cord rub back and forth on the cleat or does it have enough clearance with the angle? The tubing you used was in the plumbing department? Which tubing did you prefer? I have the IS tubing but that won't work witb those Hobie connectors. Did you just flare the IS tubing you used for your friends? I am a little worried about water in the hull. I mean it shouldn't be an issue since so many people use the same method. Thanks

The line does slightly touch/ rub the cam-cleat, but no sign of wear on the line or the cam-cleat over the 5 months of use. (Used pretty much every weekend since the install if not a little more some weeks) The Tubing did come out of the plumbing section in Lowes. I found the tubing I got from lowes was easier to slide the Hobie Line through since it was more rigid of a material compared the the IS tubing which was more rubbery. We did flare the tubing on the install for my buddy, but that was also a field install so used a lighter to melt the end the night before a tournament. I have seen the back of my kayak with some water come over the tubing inserts, but have yet to see any significant water in the hull due to the install. There is probably some water sitting inside the tubing at time though. Reason I ran 1 solid piece from front to back. Not getting into the hull to my knowledge at least in those areas or enough to tell.

No prob. Hope it goes smoothly... the toughest part is running that tubing, but once you remove the foam blocks in the gunnel walls it is a breeze!
