If you have a foot drop due to stroke, ALS, multiple sclerosis or injury to your peroneal nerve, but you’re starting to have better control and movement, this video might help you.
After gaining some control and movement to your foot and ankle in bringing it up or towards dorsiflexion, you need to continue managing it and getting it stronger. This will improve your walking and decrease your fall risk. In this video we will be doing more exercises to improve the strength of your ankle and foot and I will show you a recommended AFO that you can wear every day.
In this video you will be needing some items that you can find at home and cheap items to buy. You also need to get that AFO that I was talking about that you can wear with your shoes. The things that you will need would be a skateboard or if you don’t have one maybe a paper plate will do. You will also need ankle weights for the active resistive exercise part.
The first exercise is sitting down and bringing your leg up with your toes pointing up. Keep your knee flexed or bent and point your toes upwards. Do this 10 times.
Next exercise is foot sliding. Use a skateboard to bring your foot back and forth while keeping your toes pointing up when you extend your leg. If you don’t have a skateboard use a paper plate on the floor to help your foot to slide. Do this 10 times.
Now let’s do an exercise with resistance. Get anankle weight and put it around your foot. Place you leg on another chair Of the same height as the one that you are sitting on and move your foot up and down emphasizing on bringing your foot and toes towards you and your foot and ankle should be hanging to allow more freedom of movement.
Next exercise is knees over toes while sitting on a smooth chair that would allow you to slide forward and back. Keep your foot bended on the floor while sliding your self forward and back on your chair to bring your knee over your toes so you won’t see your foot. Just slide back-and-forth from your chair 10 times.
Next is standing knee over toes. If you don’t have a good balance support yourself using a walker or a chair in front of you. Bring your good leg back and keep it straight. Then bend the leg from the knee and bring it forward. You should not see your foot and toes when you look at it from the top.
And then lastly, practice walking. Concentrate on bringing your toes up Especially during heel strike and right after
toe off.
Now let’s talk about my recommended ankle foot orthosis. This type of orthosis is rigid from the bottom but is flexible enough with the straps that you can wear it while using your shoes. It will look Just like an ankle support.
Your reference would be the whole for your heel and then security Velcro‘s from the top and then for the foot. Bring the long straps Diagonally towards the top part of the AFO and do the same on the other side. Adjust accordingly. This should fit your shoe when you loosen up the shoelaces. This AFO is better worn with your sneakers or your tennis shoes.

My 91-year-old dad fell and fractured his hip and had a partial hip replacement. He was incredibly fit before this accident walked 5 miles a week constantly on the go and was involved in a lot of activities. Since his surgery, he has had a knee immobilizer brace on his right leg that was injured and now he has a DROP FOOT. His surgeon said he might have nicked a nerve during surgery. Okay, but he still has to wear a brace and the doctor is getting him a boot to wear. Why the boot? While he waits for this boot will these exercises help in trying to restore his foot? He still has to keep the knee immobilizer on all day long until he sees the doctor again when his boot comes in in a few weeks! My dad is more than willing to do whatever exercises it takes to restore his foot but feels stuck with the brace and recouping from his surgery which is going well. It has only been 2 weeks since his surgery. Thank you!

N. I tried the paper plate, not moving much. However, as wearing my AFO on my right foot, try sitting on my wchair sliding back and forth, instead on an ordinary chair, NO SKATEBOARD. Is this alright? I can see that using my wchair sliding back and forth, moving around 6 inches or more, my knee is slowly closer toward my right foot when moving my wchair forward and back. ???? !!!! Would this process be alright too. N..Please advise.

Addendum, my right foot is steady on the floor, and it is the wchair moving only. My knee leg and foot is 90° to start and when wchair move forward the angle of my knee and foot is acute angle.

Hi Nathaniel, you don't seem to have a footdrop when you do the 3 exercises as your foot is able to point upwards. I am 86 years old suffering a footdrop on the right leg for half my life, and it is pointing outward to the right side of my body and it slaps the ground as you walk. I use a band to pull up the footdrop when I do my stretching exercise and no way can i lift the toes up without the band. So can you tell me being 86 years old I can still improve with your 3 exercises? I never say die and willing to try out your method.

the foot might not be a true foot drop it could be a spastic foot. you need an ankle foot orthosis or brace to have a sustained stretch to that leg

Practice re-sensitizing. Touching the leg with different textures. And the nerves grow back slow, just wait for it too.

Yes. Is it tight? Or is it flimsy or flaccid? Im any case, stretch the foot to point up amd do exercises for that foot while in bed first. And wear your ankle and foot brace to prevent it from pointing down

Take your meds for it. For exercises do your ankle rocking and marching in place. And decrease sugar and carbs. Not cutting out abruptly but cut down.

EVEN THOUGH IT'S MADE FOR SNEAKERS TO GO IN IT. I HAVE TO FIND WIDE ENOUGH SNEAKERS FOR MY FEET WITH THE FOOTDROP. I TRY WITH THE SUGAR. BUT THANK YOU.

This is brace doesn't work. Not easy to put on and absolutely doesn't help to lift up foot. Looks good only on video...not practical. Exercises not the best. People with legs problem half of these exercises usable to do. Looks like he has no idea what he advice. The same as NHS phisio, very basic knowledge, /free help,no result/
