This video shows our footage in chronological order from 25 May 2023 4PM - 26 May 2023 11:30AM.
Update: 26 May 2023 1:30PM
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews today remain at the scene of a major fire in Surry Hills, dousing reignition points and assisting with investigations.
The blaze, which at its peak was declared a '10th alarm', destroyed two multi-storey buildings on Randle Street yesterday afternoon.
More than 120 FRNSW firefighters and 30 fire trucks, from multiple stations across Sydney, battled into the night to contain and extinguish the flames.
They managed to save several buildings, including adjoining residential apartments and office blocks on the opposite side of the road.
The fire is now out, but a small number of fire crews remain on-site, monitoring for potential flare-ups.
They are being assisted by FRNSW's Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), or drones, which are helping pinpoint potential areas of concern.
Significant structural collapse has occurred at the site.
Engineers and other experts monitoring the stability of what remains of the buildings.
An exclusion zone is currently in place in the vicinity of the fire scene and, at this stage, is expected to remain for at least seven days.
As a result, at least 50 nearby residents have been left displaced.
The advice for anyone who has been displaced and has not yet registered should do so via register.redcr...

This video shows the importance of two things. The importance of keeping nearby building cool to prevent the spread on other buildings, such as the one infront And the effectiveness of firewalls, which allowed to keep the buildings next door from the two that burned from going down aswell

Absolutely terrifying. I walked passed the ruined building yesterday - there were still so many fire trucks, firefighters, police officers, engineers, and reporters there. Thank you to the firefighters for working so hard and facing dangerous conditions to protect the city from this fire. I met a lovely Australian firefighter in London UK area.He had accumilated about a years worth of leave / holidays and was travelling around world for a year.he had been a fireman for quite a few years and now worked in fire prevention. One of the questions i asked him was, Did he miss being a fireman on active call? What he told me was something like ..He liked his work fighting fires but generally by the time he arrived on a call the fire had taken hold of the structure and often it resulted in exhuming remains of humans from the fire..He said that he found his prevention work saved many more lives getting smoke detectors and alarms fitted..Keep up the good work chaps and ladies Regards from UK.

@FlorenceSlugcat
@FlorenceSlugcat Жыл бұрын
Well actually one of the two attached buildings did burn. But the ones of each sides of thoses two burned down buildings didnt. It appears that the building next to it had a portion of the main building collapse and fall on top it it, since it is much lower. The pictures makes me believe all that burning materials fell down on it and trough its roof, inside of the building which probably is the reason it couldnt be contained.

A few things stand out in this video: #1: Undying respect and gratitude for the first responders who don't hesitate to put themselves in front of, under, and even inside of burning, collapsing buildings. These people save lives, often at the cost of their own. I salute you. #2: Too many people underestimate the complexity of firefighting. Imagine coordinating over 100 firefighters, looking out for their safety, evacuation of victims, crowd control, assessing and re-assessing the weakening structural integrity of the building, protecting other nearby buildings, use of technology... Firefighting is part courage, part science, and part chaos. The fire fighters did an amazing job here. #3: Drones... Freakin' awesome. #4: Did anyone else notice the way that the vehicles on the road stopped and stayed where they were to make room for first responders? Even though they had green lights, they didn't move! Utah drivers, take note!

I don't know if those were homes or businesses, but that is why I will never live in an apartment. I won't live in anything but a single family home. Even if my home burns, or my neighbor's home burns, there is a chance that the other homes will be safe. No more than one or two families would be displaced. Having multi-unit buildings crammed next to each other with a multitude of people is a major fire hazard in which people lose their homes or they lose their jobs.

I'm impressed by couple of things here: 1) Blinds that melt down by a nearby inferno, rather than go f-womp! and taking the room in seconds.. some polymer high-techs.. 2) Firewall between the buildings: the new one seem to be unaffected (well, maybe abit advanced on the heating bill at the end of the month). Some architects.. 3) Effective work of fire brigade. I've seen a cottage blaze taking half-o-village in matter of minutes, yet, this multistory inferno caused only light melts around itself. Some Blokes at work!

Every 'vacant' building in sydney should either have a working sprinkler system or be torn down and replaced by something safe and modern. It will probably be possible to construct and 'heritage' facade on a modern building for less than it would have cost to renovate this old brick structure. Now there is no choice but to go for a modern structure. Its a shame that all this drama and possible loss of life had to happen in the meantime !
