The amount of missed tackles in football is crazy tbh. A lot of guys just head hunt and throw themselves head first into contact at full speed only to miss the ball carrier by like 10 feet. Or in some cases they will make the hit but it wont down the player, and since they didnt bother to wrap the player up he just gets knocked back a little then carries on running.

The rules make it so that you have to tackle with good form because you have to wrap your arms around and below the shoulders. Rugby isn’t too much about power size and speed but it’s obviously an advantage but the key to the game is fitness, technique and understanding of the game
@ilafuimaono724

antony love below the shoulders is only for junior league as long as you don’t wrap both arms around the neck and bring them down it’s completely legal with international rules.

It’s never a good thing receiving a hospital pass but you can never get mad at your team mate because it’s all about the team not the individual so we call that” taking one for the team “, sometimes these acts of “taking one for the team “ can actually galvanise the team and build tolerance and a hard edge as you are able to absorb punishment when you shouldn’t really have to , in saying all that I still hate it when I get a hospital pass lol

There's very little protective gear worn in Rugby! A mouth guard is pretty much the only compulsory item, some players you will see wearing a Scrum Cap on their heads, which is not worn to to protect them from hits, as in its name, it's to protect the player against scrapes, cuts, loss of ears whilst they're in a scrum, which is where players from each team interlock in essentially a pushing contest to gain possession of the ball in certain instances.

They tackle high up on the body to stop the player passing the ball in the tackle "Offloading". Players are often taught to "get man and ball" ie: Hit him so he can't pass . These are also all legal tackles, there are far bigger/worse tackles but they normally illegal hits.

TheGreenPhoenix the rest of the world don’t give a shit about rugby league lol it’s only relevant in NSW and Queensland hence the biggest spectacle of your entire sport is state of origin. Your league World Cup is trash and you can switch playing for countries like you can change your underwear. Let alone there are 3 legitimate rugby league playing countries. Rugby union is the 6th biggest sport in the world, league light years behind not even in top 100, hopefully you spend the rest of your life living in NSW or Queensland or you’ll be disappointed. Good night xx P.s. here in NZ (2nd biggest league country) no one cares bout league and mighty All Blacks would destroy the Kangaroos

The early comment on the tackling is spot on as a guy who played both sports. Also, proper tackling, saves you and the other person from injury. Also, they really keep the hitting above the knees and below the shoulders, and use their arms well and do not use their heads.

A lot of tackles on these old clips are now outlawed due to the number of serious injuries - can't lead with shoulder, no contact above shoulders, can't lift players off the floor and slam dunk them

The lack of padding and tough rules force you to tackle properly, its safer for everyone at the end of the day and makes for some spectacular viewing

Nice to see someone with an extensive American football background appreciating rugby and being honest about how they see it in comparison to AF. Too often a lot of AF fans with no basis or reasoning will just disrespect other sports. Good video. With respect to you, from across the pond If your looking to get into rugby recreationally I’d just see if there’s any rugby 7,s near you. ( 7 aside rugby)

I used to play for Newcastle folcans and it's a hard game. I tackled 1 lad and broke 3 of his ribs and broke his collarbone

The reason they tackle with such great form is because its the only way to play a constant 80 minute game (with a half time break) every week without getting injured

i played rugby in new zealand from age 9-26 ive been seriously tackled and ive seriously tackled dudes , one skinny full back in the under 21s club rugby i got under his arm pits lifted him off the ground with my arms fully extended and took him over the side line and landed on him a kind of double arm choke slam but no choke , one time the opposition back line were running it at us but the ball fummbled and bounced up at my face so i caught it but at the same time a masv samoan dude hit me with a big spot tackle i went about 7 feet into the air and landed hurting my but cheek but some how i ended up with the ball and did some stepping and set up our full back for the try, i played wing

A lot of the early tackles are actually illegal, as there is no attempt by the tackler to use his arms. Unlike American football, shoulder charges are illegal in rugby union.

You have to remember despite the ferocity of the “hits” it’s the tacklers responsibility to ensure the safety of the person they have tackled, that’s why they can tackle the way they do due to the respect for your opponent
