Footballers' Careers That Collapsed XI

In this Football Daily XI we are looking at a team of players whose careers unexpectedly collapsed at one moment in time, for reasons more complicated than just issues with injury.
We look at where it all went wrong for Joe Hart at Manchester City, and the Dutch World Cup Finalist Gregory van der Wiel who now can’t even get a club. Meanwhile we profile the Middlesbrough legend Gaizka Mendieta, and try and suss out what went wrong for Joe Cole later in his career.
Finally we look at the legendary Liverpool duo of Fernando Torres and Michael Owen, both forwards whose careers never truly recovered after they left the adoring crowds of Anfield.
None of these players had careers you can consider a failure, but they all share the common theme of watching their professional days fade into obscurity after dominating the headlines during their prime.

People always say Bojan was the natural heir to Messi. There's like three years between them and Bojan broke into the first team at 16 and Messi at 17. In Bojan's first full season in the Barca first team he scored ten goals and Messi who was in his second full season at the time got fourteen. I hardly think the consensus in the Barca board room at that time was "We've got a guy ready to step in after the Messi era." It's just like calling Mason Greenwood the heir to Marcus Rashford.

You can say the same thing for Christian Tello too, although he was a few years after, he would of had to stay at the club for all his career to be considered an heir to Messi

How is Rashford that good though? The gap between Greenwood and Rashford is much smaller than Bojan and Messi.

@@tomjesty3992 I was referring more towards the age gap than the talent. People still call Bojan the Messi successor that never was but how could he have been? Even if he lived up to his talent, today he would be at Barca at 30 years old and Messi is still playing at 33. They're from the same era. If Ronaldo was still at United you could make the argument that Greenwood could be his successor. Not from a talent perspective. But in the sense that he's a young guy in a similar position who can play that position at a high level when Ronaldo leaves. That wasn't Bojan in 2007. In 2007 Messi was 19/20 years old and Bojan was 17. If anything they were both successors to Ronaldinho and Eto'o. So that's where I got the Greenwood/Rashford analogy. How can a teenager become a successor to a player just a few years older than him? A successor is a guy who comes in and replaces the older guy like Ronaldo did for Beckham. If you play together with someone for almost your entire career you're not replacing them.

Let's not forget his world cup winning team mate Kevin Großkreutz. Won the world cup and lit up the Bundesliga with Dortmund before falling from grace. Now he is playing in Germanys 3rd division and has been awful the last few years when he should have been in his prime as a defender.

Retired at 29! Definitely should have carried on playing somewhere or anywhere that could challenge for trophies, not a high profile club but one of the smaller/other leagues, a in club somewhere like Belgium, Austria, USA you get my drift, obviously depending on injuries he’s had or could get 🤷🏻♂️

The biggest career collapse ever in my opinion and one you completely missed. Adriano who was an absolute monster for Inter, and was destined to become one of the best strikers we've seen, before the passing of his father which resulted in depression.

Pato, Robinho, Hell even Ronaldinho could have been much much bigger ... Thing is, when those young people that came from extreme poverty get the taste of money and find themselves in the middle of a ruthless world, they lose track of the most important thing that is their career ... they get exploited and sucked dry by their "entourage" and then they get tossed aside

Towards the end of his Liverpool career Torres was riddled with injuries. He was told to miss the World Cup and to recover but he choose to go, only to make the injury worse. He lost a yard of pace and just like Owen his game was dependent on pace. So it was really clever business by Liverpool to sell a injured player who was never gonna be the same as a couple of years back.

As a Chelsea fan it was clear we signed him during his injury recovery, but he is cherished due to his UCL heroics, injuries were the reason behind his career slowing fizzling out, still World Cup winner and two time Euros winner and a UCL

Royston Drenthe seems like someone who stuck in a child like state. When he was at my club, Reading, he actually met 2 of my friends in a casino and invited them back to his home to play fifa. He was a very nice guy but sadly it felt like his heart was no longer in football and I can understand why. He had been rushed into Real Madrid too soon and was tossed aside at the earliest sign of poor form

Someone you missed is André Schürrle, such a great player, had a fantastic world cup 2014, and then it seems like he didn't have a single good transfer. Ironically he retired today, at 29.

It's sad what happened to Schürle and Götze after World cup 2014. They were never the same afterwards. Actually there are a lot of good German footballers who experienced a downfall

Micah Richards’ decline is pretty straightforward: He picked up an injury and nobody foresaw Pablo Zabaleta taking to the right back role so well. Micah was never able to get a chance to win back his place as Zaba was so imperious in the role. We’ll probably never know if injury made it harder for him or not, but it wouldn’t have helped that Zaba turned out to be pretty much irreplaceable, turning in the type of blood and thunder performances that made him a hero at the Etihad.

Michael Owen won the Ballon d'Or and was league top scorer. After achieving such pinnacles, your career is a success. Yes, it declined afterwards, but overall it was a success! Same for Joe Hart. At his peak, he won three Golden Gloves in four years and two league titles with City, I mean, if that's a "career that collapsed"... please, most goalkeepers would love a career like that. When it comes to "collapse," it should be in the context of unfulfilled potential (or overrated potential), like Fernando Torres on club level.

Adriano, from inter the number 1 decline. He was probably the best striker in the world, but his father died and he got depressed. Even Zanetti said he got goosebumps from that day that he witnessed Adriano when he heard the passing of his father.

Personally I don't like the way Hart was treated by Pep, but that is really unfair, as I recall he trained with Pep for less than a week before the season started(ironically because of being away with England), was dropped and loaned before the following week was up. Clearly Pep didn't like him as a player, but he didn't ruin him

You started the video by stating you aren't including players plagued by injury but then put Micah Richards in there? He was shipped out of City because of a recurring knee injury which he himself has said he played through most of the times he actually did get on the pitch. Then has said he couldn't ever get consistent time on the pitch at Villa because the same injury forced him out.

I remember Micah Richards from FIFA 08. I would always buy him in manager mode because he was rated 83 at age 19 and his potential was through the roof. FIFA always seems to overrate young English players.

I used to watch every game and I think he really was great and just peaked super early. Some players rely on physical ability and dont develop the technical side well as their sheer physical dominance starts to fade

Maniche. No one ever talks about this guy. He was instrumental for Portugal's deep runs at Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006 (making the dream team in each) and also won CL with Porto in 2004. Yet after 2006 he disappeared. He was 28 then and after a bad spell at Chelsea never found rhythm with other team.

Thomas Vermaelen should be on this list - When he joined Arsenal he became an absolute rock, arguably one of the best and most reliable defenders in the world. But then inexplicably after 2 seasons of almost perfection, he changed overnight into a weak bumbling defender who was constantly getting caught out or making mistakes. It was almost like he had turned into a different player!

as a mc fan, it was very confusing watch hart come off a great season to get replaced by bravo, who didnt seem like a great signing and then his performance was honestly laughable and overall embarrassing for everyone involved also micah richards seemed to have a great career ahead of him and even played well against ronaldo when mc and rm met in the champions league, so that one was a real head scratcher as well. It was never let on that his injuries were that serious or nagging, but who knows.

Not sure how common it is these days, but 15-20+ years ago the most talented youngsters in the biggest leagues werent properly managed or protected. Waay to many games week in week out for someone who was not yet fully developed and so they started struggling with injuries when entering their 30s

Drenthe is not playing in the first division in the Netherlands. Moreover, he hasn’t since 2007. He returned to sparta but once they promoted, he was released. His career is a Shame. Royston Drenthe left the Netherlands way too fast. Could have been an amazing player. Great person tho.

Benteke was good for almost 3 seasons he was good at genk even better at Aston Villa shit at Liverpool and for the first season was good at crystal palace but then got bad 2nd season

Joe Hart's problem was always his "hyped" mood when he played .I always remember him jumping around ,clapping and shouting even when in the tunnel before games ... not what you need from a keeper who should bring an air of calm and assurance to his defence . His career was over as soon as Guardiola was announced as City boss, in retrospect it would have better for him to have been moved on straight away rather then inevitably fail to adapt to playing with his feet .

Actually Owen is largely hated by Liverpool fans who remember his glory days at Anfield, (I'm not one of them). His switch to Man United later in his career destroyed his relationship with Reds fans.

Two premier league titles, FA Cup and League Cup show for Joe Hart it was about confidence though Pep gets rid of Joe and brings in Bravo? That never made sense but Ederson is a quality keeper. Forward Torres Chelsea. Another confidence issue.

Seeing joe hart on this list really upsets me, was a top class goalkeeper one of the best ever in my opinion. Hope he finds himself again or it might just be time to hang up the boots. Either way I’ll always remember him as top class
