Don't pay much attention to rugby, so I may be wrong, but isn't it up to the ref if they use VAR or not? Like if they aren't sure and want to double check? Not only would this put the refs under less pressure (I think about every time a ref went to the screen last season it was given, except for maybe once or twice), it puts a single person back in authority and saves a lot of time as refs would go to the screen less. Also can we PLEASE get automated offside!

I’ve very rarely seen Arteta react this volatile in interviews before, both as a player and a manager. I feel his meltdown was more so the culmination of the many dodgy decisions that have gone against Arsenal, from VAR not ruling off an offside goal against Brentford, to Martinelli’s equaliser at Old Trafford being incorrectly ruled off, not being given a penalty against Chelsea when Sanchez made a similar foul on Jesus that Onana did against Wolves (which the PGMOL literally apologised for), Kovacic not being sent off despite making two horrible tackles in 5 minutes, and now Bruno G not being sent off despite blatantly trying to murder Jorginho as well as a goal being given despite a foul in the buildup.
@Finn_Lawless
@Finn_Lawless 7 ай бұрын
There have been many more high-profile incorrect calls against them in the last couple of seasons, and more PGMOL apologies than you've mentioned. My favourite was 'forgot to draw the lines' though. This is what happens when a traditional club is up against the combined financial might of Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

@@mrartdeco It's a matter of contact though isn't it? Players can and do show their boots when they're trying to receive or control the ball in awkward positions. Fouls and cards are given based on the level of danger posed and the contact made. If a player raises his boot chest-high to receive a ball down he's singled out based on when he's doing that. Does it hit an opposition player? It's a straight red then. Does it just miss them by a hair's breadth? Probably a yellow, possibly a red. This kind of a foul is context based. Now for Havertz foul, it's his trailing leg that catches Longstaff. I can see it for grounds of yellow but red would have been too harsh imo. It's definitely a bad challenge though and yellow seems fitting. But if you're comparing it to what Bruno does to Jorginho, it's a disgrace to the sport that we love. There is absolutely no attempt at the ball and it was clearly meant to cause harm to the player.

I think that's what's always gonna continue to fuel this stuff never being addressed to the core coz fans and coaches never keep the same energy. People naturally only stand up when something goes against them but when it's someone else they'll just be like "oh well tough." I remember someone mentioning it after the Liverpool incident that rather than discuss the wider issue as a whole you had fans and coaches being passive about that incident then they'll puff chest when it happens to them and the cycle goes on and on.

There was no clear and obvious error from what I see, maybe you could say the ball is out of play but it's a real tight call and I don't feel like the angles available show concrete evidence of a clear error, it is also hard to tell when the ball last touched Joelinton and if Gordon was offside or not at that time and I fell like the whole foul on Gabriel is laughable personally he tried to go for the header realised he was not going to push Joelinton far enough back and tried to get a free kick by going down a little soft. Now call me delusional if you wish but I will agree with one thing, we did not deserve three points and we were both very lucky to have eleven men on the pitch. What Bruno did for me is a three match suspension there is no excusing that, however I feel as though havertz really should have been given a red card he goes in with his leading leg studs up and clips the shin guard of longstaff then filling through I understand is unable to be prevented but had longstaff played a different ball and not chipped it or followed through a little bit more there is the potential for a very serious injury and I feel that is also a red card. I feel like tempers were flared because of it and that's football if it had been the other way would I be real pissed off? 100% however the VAR team were shocking on multiple fronts on the night as was the officiating in general feel like many more calls were incorrectly given few throw ins went our way when they should have gone the other and vice versa.

@toddmacadam3888
@toddmacadam3888 7 ай бұрын
@@jones2tcI always hate that ridiculous argument. Is this wrestling? No? Then what does muscle have to do with anything? Refs need to realize the ball isn't sitting in an empty room for anyone to grab. One player has possession of it; all other players do not. You're entitled to take the ball away from that player BUT YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO TAKE THE PLAYER AWAY FROM THE BALL! Eddie had possession of the ball. He was pushed off of it. That's a penalty. The NEW defender didn't touch the ball until AFTER he "muscled" Eddie off. Every time we buy into their doublespeak terminology, we give them the power to pick and choose when and where they give penalties. How do we define "enough" contact? This is PRECISELY why these cheats feel justified in awarding that goal, and giving a penalty for Hojlund's "foul" on Rodri. Unless players are going to wear sensors in their shirts so we can measure the force of every push, shove, and kick, we instead need to say that EVERY push, shove, and kick is a foul... you know, like is stated in rules!

Personally I think that VAR and decisions like this annoy people because football rules are incredibly subjective. It is what makes the calls feel so inconsistent and VAR extra analysis exacerbates this. In this case the goal feels harsh because it require 3 borderline calls to go New Castle's way. My main problem with VAR is that it takes so long. A team scores, but you can't celebrate properly until the check is complete. I am in favour of more technology checking things, like offside and ball out of play, but it should be fully automated. Honestly I think even when we reach an age of fully robot refs there will be controversies still; football is just a subjective sport.
@KM-dd1cr

And that is why I have never been a fan of VAR. Controversy is a part of the game, now we are just denying people the freedom to celebrate. Sure it improves the accuracy of the decisions, but at what cost? Time it takes, and the subjectivity of most decisions makes it feel like an illusion of a fairer game.

@barrycarter7274
@barrycarter7274 7 ай бұрын
@@grahamdhv3812you get lots of close calls in rugby. The white line belongs to the ref in rugby so you will have tries disallowed because a players big toe touched the white line. There isn't the same kind of offsides but we will still have them. Also, the ball can get held up over the line so there's lots of times where a try can/cannot be given because the video evidence is inconclusive and then they refer back to the onfield decision.

Newcastle fan here. I can obviously see why they gave the goal because they couldn't conclusively not give it. But it's crazy that we don't have an overhead camera for the touchline so we can make an actual decision if it's out or just in. That same camera could have probably worked out whether it was offside or not. For me it's definitely not a foul though. I just compare it to cricket and rugby since the world cups are happening and their versions of VAR work thousands of times better and they have far less money than football.

I was expecting your opinion on another dodgy VAR decision against United and yeah I know as a United fan it would seem like it’s being made dramatic but it really needs getting looked into because 3 games at the very least haven’t gone our way because of such decisions. The Romero hand ball, the pull on Højlund by Gabriel, the Garnacho “offside”, another pull on Højlund in the city game and the “offside” against Fulham

As a Newcastle fan, the refs were an absolute joke. Firstly, in my opinion, Havertz should've been off for that tackle on Longstaff. Late, high, studs up, reckless & dangerous. He DOES make contact with Longstaff's leg but luckily it's a glancing blow. Half a centimeter the other way and he's snapped his leg. Very lucky to escape another booking later on as well. Somehow 3 Newcastle players, including Longstaff(!) get booked following the tackle. Secondly, Bruno should absolutely have been sent off too. He did the same thing against PSG and somehow got away with it as well. Lucky to escape a couple of bookings too, he was a bit too fired up for this game. Now the goal ... I don't think the balls out, BeIN sports used the same technology that they had in the world cup and it showed the ball was in play, but I think we got a bit lucky for the "foul" on Gabriel. It's a 50/50 but I don't think we could complain if that was given as a foul. As a general point though, Gabriel should be stronger there. Tony Adams in that situation takes the ball, probably both Newcastle players and boots them all into row Z. The offside? I have no idea how/when or where to draw the line. When the 4 players (Raya, Gabriel, Joelinton & Gordon) are all basically in a line and it's so unclear when Joelinton touches the ball forward, there's nothing really that VAR can do with it. If this was the other way around and Newcastle were defending here, I'd absolutely be annoyed, but I wouldn't be crying conspiracy & being so ridiculous about it. Everyone has previously banged on about if it isn't clear and you have to wait 5 or 6 minutes and look at 47 different camera angles then you should stick with the on-field decision. In this case then, I think VAR were right to award the goal. Call VAR a disgrace all you want (and I'd agree with you - I think it HAS to go), but they got it right for the goal. Arteta's interviews after the game are absolutely ridiculous, especially after saying referees are only human and need support.. etc after the Liverpool / Spurs game where there was an actual, factual cock up. The only way this makes sense is if he's doing the old Mourinho trick and trying to create that mentality that the whole world is against his club and that somehow fires up his players. Not buying it though. He needs to chill the fuck out. Same with that club statement as well, what a joke!

The thing is consistency. They refereeing team said that none of the angles were conclusive enough to overrule the on field decision, which makes some sense, its just this logic is not applied equally and seems to be whoever is in the VAR room at the time. To me, the ball did go out of play, Joelinton foul was debatable, could go either way, and Gordon seemed to be onside. I don't think there's a solution, there are things that might help, giving the ref and VAR room mics could help with transparency and alleviate some of the backlash by showing the logic the ref is using, having clear, comprehensive and consistent guidelines for the use of VAR needs to be looked at too. Bring in the automatic line detection for offsides and out of plays.

I don't know how credit goes to Newcastle in this one but the stats show Arsenal were in control and even the Eye Test passes. Arsenal just aren't clinical in the final third. Yes even the stats show that. That game was one of those 'close calls' if you win. Still shocks me how Arsenal are able to play so well with a bare bones of a midfield. Sadly, they lost game because of incompetent officiating. To be fair to Arsenal and fans that reaction from Mikel has been boiling up from last season. Personally I understand that!

I think you massively underrate newcastles performance. Keep in mind newcastle currently have 7 or 8 players out due to injury/tonali betting. We had a winger play striker for large chunks of our last two games. We moved our right back to play at left back vs you because we had nobody else. Matt ritchie and jamal lascelles played in this game and both were starting for us in the championship… If you watched the game you could tell newcastle dominated for decent stretches of the game. We also had much better chances tbh. Arsenal really never even posed an actual threat.

@@WarrandpeaceI didn't mean to "massively under rate" any Newcastle players don't get me wrong. Newcastle defensively are solid. One of the best if not the best. Even going forward were threatening during certain phases of the game. Yes, not every Newcastle player is fit and available. However I still stand by this, Arsenal still played with bare bones of a midfield. Well that's the truth, because you know what Arsenal's midfield can do. Despite that they still created chances, which they didn't take. They were decent, but not good. Again that's the truth. This is just my opinion and what I saw, if it seems like I under rated the Newcastle performance. It's my wording, that's on me.

Including VAR in the game with human beings as decision-makers, added just another level of complexity and incompetence to the EPL refereeing. The referee of the Newcastle-Arsenal match should be awarded the "Incompetence Acts of the Year" trophy. Never mind which team you support, this circus has to stop. I feel for Arsenal, it was a robbery in daylight and I am being kind. The referees attained some divine protection while their bosses, PGMOL given imperious power. What good it is to apologize and then move on to commit yet another blunder in the next match? I believe that referees and their bosses should be accountable, like any other profession, and be sued for damages in front of a court. This is just becoming far too unfair.

1. Change the offside rule to full body being past the last defender. It’s easier for officials to see on the pitch and will allow more aggressive playing. 2. Only have VAR interventions when a team wants to challenge a decision. Give them 1 or 2 challenges per game.
