Lee Van Cleef was basically retired from acting when Leone asked him to play Mortimer. This film revived his career, then the next film cemented his stardom. He went on to make lots of films in Italy, including some great Westerns like "The Big Gundown" and "Death Rides A Horse".

Great watching you watch these classic westerns. I really really hope you watch "Once Upon A Time In The West". Sergio Leone did that right after "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" and it's really his masterpiece. No Clint, but it has Henry Fonda (as the bad guy!), Charles Bronson, and Jason Robards. Also has a great female character played by Italian actress Claudia Cardinale.

In Once Upon a Time in the West Sergio Leone finally had the freedom to do a movie he wrote, and used his platform to flip the script as he was tired of hispanics always being seen as the bag guys when the real bandits of that time were the wealthy white men.

Little fact. Sergio wanted Gian Maria Volonte (Ramon/Indio) to play Angel Eyes, unfortunately he was busy at the time. That's when he had the idea to recast a good guy as a bad guy, and got Lee Van Cleef (Col. Douglas Mortimer) to play him.
@ConstantineFurman
@ConstantineFurman 2 ай бұрын
Not quite; Volonte wanted to play the Tuco part (because it was a really well-written part), but Leone thought Volonte would bring a manicness to Tuco that he didn't think was right for the character. Volonte tested for the part (which is something an actor of his stature would not generally do) but he still didn't get it because Leone wanted Eli Wallach all along. There were some other actors who passed on the Angel Eyes part. I think Henry Fonda, maybe. I know Fonda passed on being offered Colonel Mortimer. Clint suggested Lee Van Cleef, but Leone wasn't sure audiences would accept him as the villain after he had just been the kindly, heroic Col. Mortimer, but of course it worked out.

Correct, "The Man With No Name" was an American marketing gimmick when the films were released in the USA, starting in 1967. Having said that, even though Leone never said Clint was playing the same character (maybe he wanted to keep it a mystery), there are many indications he was.
@CrispyBacon101

@@thundernels you're good my dude. Near the end of Californiablend's post-movie commentary, she'd figured out that those same actors were playing different characters. The only recurring character in the trilogy was Clint's "man with no name" character. I think Wileyjdraws was mostly talking to anyone who might have been confused when they saw the same actor(s) play a similar role, and perhaps were led to believe they were reprising the same character. I'll admit when I first saw the "Dollars Trilogy," I initially thought Lee Van Cleef and Gian Maria Volonté was playing the same character. I soon realized they weren't the same characters; but nevertheless I was confused at my first viewing.

Lee Van Cleef made his film debut as a member of the cast of the classic Western, High Noon (1952), starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. He appeared in dozens of films in a career spanning four decades. Here are the titles of many classics of the genre beyond the three Leone films -- along with some of his later films -- Dawn at Socorro (1954), Gunfight at the O.K. You're obviously a huge fan of Sergio Leone, welcome to the club (it's a big club). This movie saw Leone use two small flashback scenes to explain where the watch (which as you astutely pointed out became a main character itself) originated. Leone would go on to use a strategically placed longer flashback scene (and another musical object that becomes a character) to explain his protagonist's motivation in his operatic Western masterpiece Once Upon A Time In The West, and then he would go on to use multiple flashback scenes combined with powerful music to give a backstory to co-main character "John" in his uneven, extremely violent, and once again beautifully scored film Duck You Sucker (sometimes called Fistful Of Dynamite), which dabbled in political themes for the first time. This would ultimately lead to his final film, the epic inner city gangster drama Once Upon A Time In America, where the nearly 4 hour movie and story is essentially all told as flashbacks (or an opium induced dream as some believe it to be). I look forward to watching your review for every one of those films.

My older sisters took me with them to watch "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," at a drive-in. They loved Clint Eastwood.

Clarence Leroy ( Lee) Van Cleef (1/9/1952-12/16/1989) is not playing "Angel Eyes" he's playing Col. Douglas Mortimer. His first movie was "HIGH NOON" 1952 ,he was Jack Colby he no lines. Clint doesn't smoke, only his character for these three movies.

Object as a character is often called a MacGuffin widely attributed to the great Director Alfred Hitchcock😉

Yes that is the same actors from the other movies, but as you might have figured out they are not playing the same characters..(Angel Eyes, Ramone).. just Clint Eastwood is the same character "Blondie or Manco" , or also known as the Man with No Name :)

Great reaction. If you are really enjoying these "Spaghetti Westerns" by Sergio Leone, strongly recommend the lighthearted film "My Name Is Nobody" which has been said was Sergio Leone's farewell to Spaghetti Westerns. He did not direct it but was involved with developing the storyline from my understanding. Excellent story with a great ending. Terence Hill and Henry Fonda are excellent in it! Music was composed by Ennio Morricone for this one, too.

I think you'll like "Once upon a time in the west", it isn't part of the Dollars series, Clint turned down the part, if he hadn't then it surely would have been. One of my top Eastwood "western" is "The outlaw Josey Wales", maybe not quite as grand as these but one very memorable movie, great characters.

When I was a kid we went to the drive in a lot in the summer and this was one I saw. It is such a great Hollywood (even though it’s Italian) film with the setting the actors and the mood, music it’s all such a great MOVIE! Great choice.

This western was the 2nd of the Sergioni Trilogy with Eastwood. 1. A fistful of Dollars 2. For a few dollars more 3. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.

I LOVE that you watch and react to Spaghetti Westerns. They cemented the careers of some huge and incredibly talented actors. It’s just nice to see them get some praise from modern audiences! Keep doing what you do! I loved your reaction to Oredator so is there any chance you could react to Prey? It’s aesthetic is incredible!

Now you're going to have to watch "Once Upon a Time in the West", which stands independently and elevates the Leone/Morricone films to a new level.

After watching the film several times, what sticks with me is how twisted the character of Indio is. You can tell something broke inside him after that woman killed herself in front of him. He still kills, robs and gets revenge, but mechanically, without any joy. And he has a death wish. He gives some of his enemies a small chance to killing him, and welcomes the main characters into his gang knowing they may be his undoing. That he keeps the watch to remind him of everything is icing on top, just as that he doesn't bother to tell the other gangmember why he keeps it.

Mando takes inspiration from westerns and seemingly Firefly and it's feature film Serenity. Which is a sci fi western and the the best written sci fi since the original Star Wars trilogy.

Your ranking is the same as mine. I never thought about how effective three main characters are to Leone stories, but I think you're right. You'll see some of that in "Once Upon A Time In The West", too. Great reaction!

The G B and U was a film based in the 1863 time frame...this one occured, based on the Colt pistols being used, sometime after 1873, when the Peacemaker was introduced. I chuckled at the comment about Mortimer...

Really enjoyed your reactions to these movies. This is probably my favourite of the three, although it is very close between this and _The Good, the Bad and the Ugly._ If you like Clint Eastwood, _Dirty Harry_ is a must-watch, as his character in that movie is just as iconic as The Man With No Name.

The 50 cents the kid earned was not two quarters. It was a 50 cent piece. You will notice it was just one coin. I am 83 years old and when I was a kid this was in use all the time. It was also called a half dollar or 4bits.
