One of the most appealing things that brought me here is the adherence to old fashioned morals and family centered culture. I love that filipinos honor their elders and help support them when they can no longer take care of themselves. Also the way they look past disabilities and the way people look. In the west we don't honor our elders and we definitely judge people by their looks and limited abilities. While there are always going to be things that could be improved here, we westerners could learn a lot watching our hosts.

I agree, but respect also goes both ways. Treating a foreigner as an ATM is not being respectful, including any double standards that apply here. Ditto for charging a skin tax.

Another great video, Mike. Respect here is key. You don't have to like someone or something here, but you do need to have respect for them or it. It's their country. It's their culture. We, as guests here, need to adapt and adjust our behavior and attitudes, or you're going to have issues. Speaking for myself, it's been fairly easy for me to integrate because when I'm back home, I live in a small room. Here, my 2 children sleep in the same room as my wife and I. I do that I can live like a common Filipino family. I eat the same foods. I participate in common activities. The way I interact with my wife's family has been altered to be more Filipino like. Now, do I like or enjoy doing some of these things? Not always, but that's not the point. It all goes back to showing respect to the people who've accepted you as another member of society and as family. As I've stated before. Most retired expats are not normal people. It's a testament to the good-hearted nature of the Filipino people. After all, they know that we are not normal men, but they welcome us anyway.

Yesterday my regular trike driver pulled up with his yoing daughter. When I paid, I gave him the fair and gave a tip for his daughter to get a snack. You should have seen the look on her face. Just a simple kind gesture goes a long way!

Yes, Mr & Mrs Po, respect for old people is important. Even I as a foreigner 80 years old get to use the priority lane everywhere, such as at the pharmacy, Jollie Bee, etc. In fact, the last time I arrived was in a PNP chopper but left on the Genesis bus from SM Clark. At that time some Philippino said sir you don`t have to wait in the back of the line and they took me to the front, where some Americans started yelling that I could not cut in line. Guess what, these Americans were not allowed on the bus

Great point Mike. For those of us, who grew up in the western culture, don’t need to go far, when it comes to cultural differences. Let’s take northern and Southern California, there alone, has cultural differences. How much more, between countries?

Cultural respect was something I had to learn, when I first came to the Philippines. Not that I was rude, by western standards, but I still probably came across as more harsh than most people were used to. Many apologies later, and I'm getting the hang of it. It took awhile to get accustomed to getting preferential treatment for being a senior! My Wife made sure I got in the senior/PWD/pregnant lines at the store, got my senior discounts at restaurants, etc. Like you said, the P.I. government can't offer the citizens many things, but the senior/PWD/pregnant benefits shows respect to those

I've experienced a lot of disrespect and scammers in dating apps from Filipinas. Even after I ask them not to do it anymore, and they agree, it still happens. That's when they get ghosted. The first few I would try to discuss it with them, then they act like they can do no wrong. It's just better for both, if I just ghost them.

Mike, good study. Different countries have different cultures. Not knowing the culture before you arrive in any foreign country will put you at a disadvantage. Your own upbringing is in constant conflict with the real world in the Philippines. I, as an American, learned early in my travels that respect is the key to success in any Asian country, no matter which Asian country it happens to be. We've said it before, and I'll say it again. Drop your baggage at the arrival gate when you come into the country. Immerse and explore. If you find the country is not right for you, leave. Mike, you and Arlyn have a wonderful day, and we hope she feels better soon.

Great video Mike, you know I'm wondering as far as both Filipinos and foreigners talking of work ethics as Covid really disrupted all work ethics and l cant talk about USA but l know my Asawas family had to find work in any way possible and the family really had to battle together and in Australia its not much difference and every one is or has to work harder, we have to respect cultures also in the Philippines or in our own country. Respect certainly is a big area and we should show respect for cultures and have understanding. Cheers!

Brein, that actually a very complicated question. Here in the Philippines we are still recovering from covid and the world economy. I honestly think its much harder for locals to make a living now than it was 5 years ago. Thanks for watching.

During my first life lessons in the Philippines I dated a 25 year old and she was scamming me. Once I caught on she cussed me out via messenger something fierce. At the time I didn't understand jack squat of Tagalog so I sent the message to another Philippine friend that told me what she had said. Word for word. OUCH! I ended that quickly. Since that less than exciting moment in time I have "thank God" never ever run into another disrespectful Filipino again. I have been chewed out again by my current girlfriend but I knew that was coming and it hahaha didn't end the relationship. And there were no cuss words exchanged 🤣

Yeah you know this is difficult because I've worked around lots of Filipinos and culture is simply a language and I find that people are no different almost anywhere you go in the world. I guess you got to crack the code But I can tell you that even that seems like a headache sometimes. Still it has to be done generally speaking. I do agree though that if you issue respect, you're likely going to have very few problems anywhere you go in the world.

Misunderstandings occur because people do not speak to be understood. Knowing their culture helps, not knowing the culture is to be misguided by good intentions.

In relationships there must be mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual affection. Our World In Data shows PH has an abysmal 4% trust in others. So, how much can we expect respect to be valued when they see us as nothing more than a walking ATM. Yes, it's their culture and most foreigners I've met seem to treat them with respect. The problem is the men looking for love who aren't Chads. Only-Chads are loved, worldwide. The rest is transactional (fake love). Why is this so hard to accept?
