The lyrics are from a poem by Heinrich Heine, a Jewish German poet. From the poem "Ich hatte einst ein schönes Vaterland." One could say the poem connects to the song and its title as a lament about the loss of something beloved or beautiful, like feelings of home. "it was a dream." Some feel that Heine foretold of Nazi Germany 98 years before Hitler was born. The Nazi's hated Heine's writings and tried to destroy them, but they were too popular.

foretold? such bullshit. The anti-Semitism in Heine's era was think and fast and in most ways but one, worse than in Hitlers era .

My favorite line is between the therapist and Donnie. The search for God is absurd? It is if everyone dies alone.

Inspired by Gorecki's Symphony No.3, Op.36 (1976). This track will always remind me of when my ex turned off her lights to lie down alone and without me one evening, not long after I moved in with her the first time, in 2013. We had just watched Donnie Darko, and this was of course playing.

Perhaps for pondering afterwards. Like Mister Rogers says at 3:10 in this video ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ecpxjZpqps7Hlo0.html ): "After you've heard someone play beautiful music, sometimes you just like to have a quiet time to remember it. Let's just sit and think about what we've heard."
