Far and away, this was the one time that Roger Moore played the role of Ian Fleming’s James Bond! Thanks to a good director, and a superior script - which left out the juvenile quips for which he had become famous - Moore came across as a credible hero. His visible maturity and world-weariness added an edge to his performance. (Too bad he stayed on for those two more films!) Add to that an excellent supporting cast, thrilling action, and a fabulous score by Bill Conti, and you have Moore at his peak as 007!

I think Carole Bouquet is gorgeous. Daring, skilled and dangerous, too. All very appealing. The red Lotus was cool as well.

As far as I'm concerned this and "The Spy Who Loved Me" are the best Roger Moore James Bond movies. And I completely disagree with Stam about the music in this film! I think that its quasi-disco sound fits this early 80s Bond movie perfectly! I love it!

For Your Eyes Only was my first Bond Film and remains one of my favourites. Carole Bouquet, Lyn Holly Johnson and Sheena's Easton were Gorgeous ( & i was 11 !! ). This was my bench-mark.

This one's easily my favorite Moore film. It was a bold choice to have Roger to play the character created by Ian Fleming for once. After a decade of using the novels as drink coasters, EON finally returns to something more akin to From Russia with Love and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Plus, I love how Gogol is a villain in this film. And I seem to be in the minority in thinking that Julian Glover is a great Bond villain.

The 80s TV style character titles was an absolute genius touch.

Carole Bouquet’s eyes completely mesmerized me. A combination of fierce determination and isolation, plus absolutely stunning. It’s too bad her voice was dubbed, but it would be difficult for a French actress to pull off a Greek accent speaking English! 😉

I was 12, this was my first Bond film I saw in the theater, though I had seen The Spy Who Loved Me but on TV.

This is the Bond movie I Reface App'd myself into. Now I can't watch it without seeing, well, me, and it takes me right out of it. I may also remember me from such Refaced movies as Mission Impossible, Star Wars, Gladiator, Rocky, Dumb & Dumber, Back to the Future, and most recently, Braveheart. They may take my face, but they'll never take my freedom. And I'll never see those movies the same way again, sigh. It's never good to be your heroes

It's so fascinating that roger Moore constantly pushed against the young bond girl. He was like, I'm old and proper and I shouldnt be going around with a teenager.

What always bugged me was Bond's line to Gogol at the end. He acted like it was some sort of tie, when destroying the ATAC was a perfectly acceptable option for the British. The fact that it wasn't destroyed was the whole point of Bond's mission. If the water had been deep enough to make it unable to be recovered, they'd have been fine with it. ANother thing is the oxygen tank. For some reason Melina takes off her tank and leaves it at the bottom of the ocean when Bond arrives and they swim up to the ship. The only reason seems to be so that it's available when they escape from Kristatos and have to play dead by staying underwater

Conti's score way better than felt here and that movie is one of the best of the franchise.

Another top drawer review peppered with the usual dose of imaginatively witty analogies. I always look forward to a new Stam Fine installment. They never disappoint. Time hasn't been kind to this Bond film but it still has some stand out scenes. Bond contending with Bibi's advances is hilariously executed by Sir Roger and of course his booting the car over the edge of that cliff! I distinctly remember seeing that for the first time. I think if any other Bond actor had done that it wouldn't have had anywhere near the impact.

This is one of the best Bond movies of all time. James Bond gets to travel to several exotic locations, exciting action especially that underwater scene where the bad buy tries to drill through the window on Bond's submarine, or when Bond and Melina is tied up and taken for a ride through the water, the opening song by Sheena Easton etc. In my view it's the perfect Bond movie hitting all the spots. You're right about some lack of chemistry between Roger Moore and Carole Bouquet, but since I had kinda of a crush on Carole I have to disregard your nonsense 😁 It was a one movie crush, never seen her in any other movie. This movie kinda felt like North by Northwest except dialed up to 11. Both movies feature several distinct locations and sets, it feels like an adventure, or Indiana Jones movie. It even shows a darker side to Bond when he pushes the car over the side in a very satisfying way. I may not be able to tell apart any of Dalton, Brosnan, or Craig's Bond movies but this one stands out just as much as Goldfinger and Dr. No. Dr. No has one of the best death scenes in movie history.

This rivals THE SPOY WHO LOVED ME as Moore's best Bond as far as I am concerned and though some editing and a few jokes do not work, I think it looks great, has a smooth pace, the Conti music score is better and more classic (the skiing sequence music was used for the TV spin-off RUNAWAY WITH THE RICH AND FAMOUS (Moore appeared on both Robin Leech shows) and I would argue the score helped invent 1980s-style music. Glover is good and we don't know he is the villain at first. Bouquet and Moore apparently did not get along that well, but their pairing worked and it is the only time to date Bond has worked with a man who wanted revenge without anyone's help (though we get a scene of something like that in GIOLDFINGER, it is not the same) so when it comes to classy action films, they all want to be FOR YOUR EYES ONLY.

I always thought the ATAC was clearly a desk calculator. Does seem like a severe security lapse that just *having* this device would be so crucial a win. But that's a MacGuffin for you--the precise mechanism that makes it a MacGuffin is not so important.

Best Bond ever. Period.

For my money, this is the quintessential Roger Moore bond film. Moore's usual mugging is discarded and the tone is less campy. For some it may be seen as a loss, but it works like gangbusters for me. And the Warren Zevon-lookalike henchman played by the late Michael Gothard (who sadly gets no shout-out here) adds some realistic menace, as opposed to the cartoonish Jaws, who couldn't even remain a baddie into the final act of Moonraker.

You left out the actor played the villain as General Veers in Empire Strikes Back: You May start your landing.

I really enjoyed this film. I think the film is subtly funny, and very well scripted. I have no problems at all that it is different in style from some of the other Bond films.

For Your Eyes Only is my favourite Bond by far, then Moonraker, then Live and Let Die, then Die Another Day. The Connery ones are good but I saw them way into adulthood as compared to growing up with Roger Moore. Spy Who Loved Me was my first and bored me to death as a kid and not much inspiration as an adult. Moonraker is pure fun, all popcorn. FYEO I like as an actual Bond film.

I can see what you mean about the score. I think that in '81, it wasn't fully the 80s yet ('83 is the year the 80s fully became the 80s imho). In '81, the culture at large hadn't quite figured out yet if it wanted to carry on with what it had been doing in the 70s or if it wanted to commit to something new.

This is my favourite Bond-film, along with From Russia With Love. I disagree with so much in your review, but you do also make som good points. Especially about the bland villain. However, Topol makes up for it with being a charming villain helping out. And Carole Bouquet is just so amazingly beautiful, but I agree with you that the dubbing is awful.

Should have replaced Moore with Dalton for this film as Moore said he wanted leave it would have given Dalton a decent run at Bond (though Octopussy was a Moore bond film). Dalton was busy making Flash Gordon & Brenda Starr at the time.

I always thought the lead lady with Bond was badly acting but now i learn she was dubbed in either all along or after when they ran the edit and saw how bad she was? She has beautiful face but seems a bit wooden when being serious. Glover is always brilliant but here sort of well.... That leaves the sweet Holly adding some much needed "fun" to this film and the rest as dangerous killers all over the place and i think thats why this film seems a bit heavy handed. Great skiing and snow brought in as not enough and a stuntman falling on that rope by accident but captured and used ? Very grounded and serious and gritty and hard this film is but add the monastery and token KGB guy and stolen widget and it gets 6.59/10 i think

I actually enjoyed this. I found it refreshing to get away from the silliness if previous Moore Bonds. Thought I'd check out more about Sir Roger. What a charming man. A real English gentleman. Researching his biography he was not a well man and had suffered a lot of illness since childhood. A little trivia. Nexttime you eat a Magnum ice cream give thanks to Sir Roger. It seems he was at a function and got talking to the CEO of Walls. He,Sir Roger,mentioned an ice-cream he and his friends used to enjoy as kids. I grew up going to see Roger Moore 007 films in the movie theater but can barely stand to watch them, now.

Er, Cubby Broccoli didn't decide that he didn't want to follow Moonraker with a bigger budget Bond movie. That decision was down to United Artists, who lost an absolute fortune on Heaven's Gate, verging on total bankruptcy, and who didn't have the money to splash on FYEO. I'm afraid you fell for the old 1981 PR spin from the producers and you've simply parroted as fact.

Sorry; but, this, by far, was Moore's best Bond. It was the only time I could take him seriously, in the role,. Few stupid jokes, few sight gags, few idiotic gadgets, a good cast, a serious story and excellent action sequences. Prior to this Moore had basically played Simon Templar, masquerading as James Bond. For those of us who were fans of the novels, it was nice to actually see some Fleming material on screen. I agree about the score, which was terrible and hopelessly out of date even then, in 1981, when New Wave hadn't fully ascended in music, but Disco was well dead. Bernard Lee was greatly missed, but, Geoffrey Keen was back for a third time, which brought some continuity and it was the first time they tried to use Bill Tanner, M's Chief of Staff. By the way, that is not keelhauling. Keelhauling consists of being tied and suspended under a ship and dragged either laterally, across the keel (from port to starboard or vice versa) or down the centerline (bow to stern), scraping across the barnacles. What is in the film is just a nautical version of being dragged behind a horse.

This is where dalton should’ve been casted and he could’ve led the franchise with much better results than Moore did. As good as sir Roger was I’m not hating but he was DEFINITELY getting too old and his films were becoming a full on parody of themselves plus his version of bond was becoming very passé in the 80s with action stars like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and many More. He simply didn’t stand a chance going against those action heroes he would’ve if it was the 70s which he definitely fit but not the 80s
