If anything, these borrowers should be able to delay their payments till the emergency is over (which it is now) or be forgiven of the debt/payments that were due during the emergency (which would be hundreds of dollars or a few thousand at worst). But not the whole debt. Surely 5 years from now (however long their loan terms are) they aren’t still effected by the pandemic to the point that they simply can’t make their payments.

Agree 100%. But I think it's Congress who needs to take a lesson here. Under our Constitution, Congress is supposed to act as a check on the abuse of the President's power. By passing a statute that was so broadly worded, it completely abandoned its duty to act as a check on the President. Indeed, Congress gave virtually unfettered authority to the Education Secretary, a member of the President's cabinet, and the President proceeded to abuse the hell out of it.

The major reason universities are 'price gouging' is due to federal government backed and directly issued student loans. Colleges and universities see that as a no lose incentive to continually increase the cost of 'higher education' and granting degrees in useless fluff fields that give the student no marketable skills, but are easy to pass with minimal effort. Prior to 1980, most adults didn’t need college educations to find a decent paying job. Gen X have been asked to take on the equivalent of an additional down payment on a home or home mortgage to make the same wages as the ppl who did these same jobs back in 1980. If this country wants educated young ppl, this country can contribute to the education and training necessary to prepare our young ppl for work, like k-12 and every other wealthy country. This "relief" was not universal nor comparable, thus making it an unfair process which discriminated against those Americans by using tax dollars which were taken from individuals who either chose not take a loan or have met their contract to paid it off. This administration could have simply suspended the process of repayment by allowing for deferral, but instead, they chose to discriminate and cancel only certain individuals' contractual obligations in society to repay their debt. They, the administration and congress, had no right to do so as neither were parties to these contracts, and it is simply wrong!

The heroes act does not cover student loans, and what about all the people that lost their jobs or got evicted because they could not afford to pay rent. People that did not go to school should not be on the hook for people that did.

If they forgive student loans then car loans are next, followed by mortgages. College educated people earn more money and can have unfair advantages in getting government jobs and such. Debt forgiveness is kind of a scam as businesses can use it easily enough whereas home owners don't get the same treatment. College is so over priced that it's essentially a burst bubble now. There are lots of important College courses that are needed to train doctors, engineers and scientists to name but a few, but there are lots of courses that are taken for fun and leisure without leading to a high paying job...thus over valued. I have no College education and earn good money because of hard work. I couldn't afford it at the time and young people now are sadly lost and led down the garden path to misery

That line of questioning from Alito served no purpose. He's asking a moot question about fairness when there has always been a group affected by a decision. Poor families get more money during tax season, no one says "I didn't tell those poor fucks to make all them babies, I pay all my bills and pay all my taxes, they should too." Many won't say that, but these kids need assistance, mainly because they have shitty parents who didn't bother to save for their college tuition, but instead bought cases of bud light, and went to Vegas every payday. Yeah ... it's the schools and kids fault.

I don’t understand people borrowing 100’s of thousands of dollars to get a degree that can’t make a living with. I have a nephew that studied anthropology an I related that he had better get a doctorate so he could at least teach. As luck would have it he got a job with the government studying economic trends which really doesn’t go with his PhD. What got him the job was that it proved to the government that he was willing to work hard for 8 years to get his PhD. Now if you go out and get a masters in medieval warfare. Well , good luck with that.

"if anything this encourages people to be financially irresponsible." Yes, as has always been the case with student loan guarantees. Worse, it motivates colleges to be exploitive. What even better, the people who benefit the most are the ones most irresponsible, and their reward is to be financially advantaged in the market at your expense.

Her argument of making sure student loan holders are not worse off is disingenuous at best and just a flat out lie at worst. Student loans were paused during the pandemic alleviating the hardship of paying them during the pandemic. Forgiving student loans would benefit student loan holders not just alleviate the hardship. The heros act doest say that an emergency allows the secretary to benefit student loan holders only to alleviate hardship, which was done by pausing the student loan payments and interest. These loans were not taken out as a result of the pandemic and with bidens economy at the best America has ever seen according to this administration, the pandemic is not keeping people from finding work post graduation. Crazy that they are even asking for this in such a robust economy.
