How To Delete File Or Folder That Won't Delete? From time to time we get a file or folder that we can't delete, so in this video, I will show you how to force delete file or folder that won't delete.

I've had a stuborn 20GB video file that has no length that won't delete and Command didn't help. I've just used the EMCO UnLockIT programme Britec mentioned. It really does work for those pesky files/folders that refuse to budge to the Recycle Bin.

I was unsuccessful with running the command but I tried out the "EMCO UnLock IT" software and it was pretty much just a two step process after downloading it. Thank you for showing more than 1 way to solve my issue. Great video!

thanks for the tip. I had to use emco because the force delete would always say it could find the file. I used emco and it worked. But when I went to uninstall it, had to shutdown explorer.exe, But it didn't reopen it. I had to find a way to go into task manager and start it, but it started to flash and I had to force restart my pc. wouldn't recommend using that program again.

Wow! incredibly easy! Had an EXE file that wouldn't boot nor be able to get deleted, so I did the /S function for delete on CMD and it just worked. Nice. Appreciate it :)

In my case the CMD method didn't work, but I suspect it was because the corrupted file was on a different drive than C:\, (I did try using cd first but CMD couldn't accept the path to the file even with the drive letter amended). I went ahead and tried the EMCO UnlockIT freeware you mentioned at the end, and it worked a treat. Thanks for a helpful tutorial :)

You can find the file via: dir C:\mfilename.ext /S /B ----- This will show the file and path in ANY directory on your C: drive, if it finds it. If you have other drives, you can do the same replacing the drive letter. When you look at the command, it looks like it only checks the file in the root, but what it does is just a bit different: it checks for a file with that name, also in the subdirectories. And, since the root of your disk has many subdirectories (well, our whole disk in fact), it looks into your full disk.

Thanks Brian. You could also hold down the "Shift" Key then right click and "Copy as Path" and that will get you the whole path to paste into CMD. For those of us that don't like to type.

Just to let you know there is A much easier way to fix this issue (by using WinRAR, just set it to delete sources files/folder After achieving selected folder/files) it only takes a couple of seconds

Command prompt failed saying, "File was not found". But the 3rd party app, Unlocker worked for me. I just installed it, deleted the files I wanted it and uninstalled the app. All good now. Thank you!

Everytime I do that it says “The system cannot find the file specified” I type in the file name exactly how it is. Ive tried case sensitive, putting underscores inbetween the words. Nothing works.

The system gives each file a different name, you have to go to the file (cd /d [file location, for example C:users\user\downloads) then find the file (dir /x), now see if it's a folder or a program, if it's a folder you use rmdir /q /s [system given filename] if it's a program use del /q /s [system given filename]. If for any reason access to remove it is denied, it's most likely a virus. For that many anti virus softwares can force remove it if you specify it to find/remove it.

its not the file name you need to type.. its the name to the left of the file name.. heres an example of the file i just deleted.. File name: The Synth sounds of Donna Summer Actual name you need to type in: THESYN~1 This drove ME MAD FOR HOURS!! :)

Thanks for your recommendation but still, my folder can't be deleted using this technique. However, I crossed around "task manager" software alike to see if there's any related files running in a background that can't be detected using Win10 Task Manager. I've found a culprit, stopped it and deleted it.

You’ve most likely just written the path wrong

If you want an easy way follow this: -You need 7zip or winrar. 1. right click the folder or file 2. go on 7zip and click "add to archive" in the dropdown menu 3. Look for the option "delete files after compression" and check the box 4. click okay. 7zip will now create a zip file and it will DELETE the undeleteable file. 5. Now you can just delete the zip file and you are done

Under C you can type U and press tab if would auto complete to user. If there is more that one file or folder staring with any letter you can keep pressing tab to go through your choices. I

I have found that when you toggle developer settings for file locations, that sets permissions which block you from deleting files.

These are called attributes in Windows, and the one shown in the video (to override) is just one of them. Apart from the "readonly" attribute, also the "system" attribute can prevent deletion. Check with: attrib filename.exe --- Change it with the same command, see: attrib /?

i had a problem with this and it just jammed up the file in general, but after a few minutes (without using any tutorial or doing anything) the procces somehow finished and it did everything i told it to in the past minutes i tried to move/remove it from my system.... looks like the file hang up in the CPU and lagged it a bit but its now ok

For me, it was a random audio file I extracted from a game, and it simply would not delete or be moved to another folder. This method worked after 27 minutes of waiting.

Another good way to clean up files is just boot into a live USB Distro say Linux Mint this allows you to delete view move copy or even, change partitions and its quick.

the user account is the name your screen has when you have to put the passcode to enter the computer, if you need other location than desktop just put the name of the file like for example:downloads. to find the path i have no ideea

I've got a couple of files that simply will not delete. I put in the exact path and Windows tells me the file does not exist. Yet, it's right there in the folder.

there is another very simple way of doing this too that also works, it will notify that changing a name extension may cause it to become unstable - just rename the chosen FILE without for (example) .jpg or .mp3 and .mp4 etc. then click delete.

I'm trying to delete something in my recycle bin. When I pressed empty recycle bin it deleted all but 2 files but those pesky 2 files are still there and the empty recycle bin option is now greyed out but the items supposedly can be restored but I have no intention of restoring them because I don't want them. I get the message "The system cannot find the file specified." from cmd prompt.
