I wanted to do this because one of my Chromecast TV devices is now able to be part of an audio group, whereas the other one isn't because it's stuck an older software version.
To perform this action, ensure that you have another computer connected to the same network as your Chromecast device, and run the following command:
Update command (from Windows PowerShell):
Invoke-WebRequest -Method Post -ContentType "application/json" -Body '{"params": "ota foreground"}' -Uri "[YOUR_CHROMECAST_IP]:8008/setup/reboot" -Verbose -UserAgent "curl"
Update Command (Unix systems [Linux & MacOS]):
curl -X POST -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"params": "ota foreground"}' [YOUR_CHROMECAST_IP]:8008/setup/reboot -v
If you need to reboot and abort, change the parameters in the command from “ota foreground” to simply “now”, eg;
Invoke-WebRequest -Method Post -ContentType "application/json" -Body '{"params": "now"}' -Uri "[YOUR_CHROMECAST_IP]:8008/setup/reboot" -Verbose -UserAgent "curl"

I'm getting the same error. The last update is broken and since there's no way known to downgrade the firmware, I'm trying a forced preview version update and I get this error

Yeah, won't work on all firmware versions unfortunately. To be honest i was quite surprised at how open it was in the first place, so it's no surprise if they've tightened things up security wise. Ah well.

That worked for me too, i had a lot of trouble with my pc's powershell version. I turned preview on and reboot it from the settings and boom! Thanks both of you!

YES !!! It was the issue !!! When you activate the "preciew" program and reboot the Chromecast, it updates immediatly !!! Thank you 👌🏻

My linux machine wouldn't update through terminal, I turned on preview, rebooted my chromecast... it updated! Thanks everyone!

Good video. My Chromecast was on FW 1.35.xxx which I guess isn't compatible with Disney+. I tried this method to force the update. Like you, my Chromecast was stuck on Fetching Update 0% for a very long time. I went into the Google Home App and told it to reboot while it was stuck. After 10 or so seconds it rebooted then it immediately saw there was an update available and started downloading. It finished after about 5 minutes, rebooted itself a few times, and now it is at FW 1.42.172094 which is the latest. Tried to Cast Disney+ from my tablet again and now it is working. Yay! The children are saved.

@@SwitchedOnNetwork Perhaps I just got lucky. I was really annoyed when Disney+ "wasn't available on this Chromecast device" though... Now I'm just annoyed Disney+ won't be available on my PS3. Got any tricks for that?

ha, no sorry... in fact I wouldn't be surprised if there's a backroom gentleman's agreement between Sony/Microsoft and Disney not to allow it on the last-gen consoles in order to propel sales of the newer models! Pure speculation, of course, I have no evidence of that (please don't sue me...)

Great instruction but unfortunately didn't work on my device. What I found did, is to simply switch on Preview Programme and then reboot. It fetches and downloads the latest firmware update automatically.

Show !! Funcionou aqui em casa !! Mais tem lembrar as pessoas que tem de iniciar o Internet Explorer pelo menos uma vez, pois ele não e meu navegador padrão. Por esse motivo o Powershell não executou o comando. Depois abrir o Internet Explorer uma vez e iniciar ele , tudo funcionou perfeito.

Built-in firewall within ROUTER is the culprit. Tried video solution on 2nd gen, didnt work. I was about to buy 3rd gen. Then i noticed something with my phone that directed to solution for Chromecast. My Samsung phone monthly patch firmware would always stop after few seconds and be stuck. So i tried to update firmware over data, it worked. I knew at that point, my ROUTER was the culprit. I reset my router, set it up without security, disable firewall and connect Chromecast using its open wifi, update worked like a charm. Once update done, set my router with password and firewall.

@@Lizzy1911 hey Heidi. All routers has their default ip address which lets user login to router settings through web browser, exp asus router 192.168.1.1, dlink 192.168.0.1. Once you login to router setting, disable firewall, disable wifi security, save, reboot. Once your update completes, please make sure to enable firewall, enable wifi security.

I didn't know about this command. I solved it using the google home app and selecting 'restore factory settings'. it reconfigures everything and updates automatically.

@@SwitchedOnNetwork there are morons in here, right? some people just dont understand how technology works. you give them a process on HOW to update a firmware, they expect it to work ALL THE TIME. they just dont get it that theres a myriad ways on why things dont work. foremost is if there is no update for the firmware. I doubt it, as that's a totally different device that just uses the same protocol. But no harm in trying, or there might be a similar method using different command.

It depends on what version you'd be going from and to. The Chromecast help pages don't tend to give much detail, just current latest version numbers (support.google.com/chromecast/answer/7124014?hl=en-GB) but the blog post and other announcements from Google will let you know of new features, etc. In my case, I was wanting the feature where a TV chromecast could be included in an audio group with other Chromecast Audio devices and smart speakers. One of mine could, the other couldn't. In the end I just swapped them round :)

Running Chromecast2.0, Windows7, using admin Powershell I got an error in red: "The term 'Invoke-WebRequest' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. " My chromecast is already working Ok, I just thought I'd try this for fun. Would there be any significant reason (like my OS) why I'd be getting this error?

Ok, it's because even with my Win7 SP2 the Powershell is version 2.0, and "Invoke-WebRequest" wasn't introduced until 3.0. At this time the most recent version is 5.1.

@@SwitchedOnNetwork Hahah on a 2009 Inspiron that initially came with Vista. Only replaced the HD and doubled the RAM in 2014, and various back-end optimizations. It sat on a fan deck it's whole life, and I re-paste the CPU every so often. I'm in engineering school and it handles very resource intensive CAD programs well, doesn't overheat, doesn't crash. So, the why. I love 7 and I can make any work-arounds I need happen. It's not adding to toxic burn pits in Ghana or elsewhere. 10 runs about 180 baseline processes, almost none of which I want where 7 runs ~90, esp on low graphics (I don't need pretty and polished). And much of that is telemetry and tracking that I already keep off on 7. 10 is also a stepping stone towards corporate centralization, heading towards 11 where you may not be able to even use the thing without working through a MS account. It's my middle finger to BigTech. lol

I tried it but it didn't work. Searching for updates lasted for few minutes then I received an error that asked me to check for wifi or reboot. Since no issues with wifi I rebooted it and all I got was the same error again. Anyways thanks.

Ah shame - sounds like you had almost the same experience as me. It's odd, as my two Chromecasts appear to be the same hardware version when I compare the backs, but must be a slightly different revision as the newer firmware seems incompatible with one of them. Strange and a bit frustrating, but hey-ho :)

The chromecast rebooted with the powershell command, but the version remained 1.36.157768. My other chromecast is up to 1.42.172094. Is there anything else I can try?

You could try opting into beta/preview stuff for that Chromecast on the app, but other than that I don't know of anything

I don't have any other info I'm afraid so you'll have to do that Google search yourself. Bear in mind it didn't even work for my Chromecast ;) I think they may have also strengthened the security on the API now, too, so this method might be defunct for good now..........

I had a similar problem and restarted to factory default. After that the command worked and didn't get the 403 message anymore. However, the device keeps stuck on 0% updating.... :( You can try reseting, perhaps could work for you.

hmm my settings button seems to disappear for some reason 🤔 Time to try updating... Edit: It still seems to disappear after updating, but it seems like I can get into the settings menu by tapping on it quickly before it disappears!

The trick did not work for me... Thus, I decided to reset my Chromecast 2nd Gen before forcing an update. Turn out my Chromecast picked up the latest firmware during the setup stage (after resetting my Chromecast).

Wow, this is great! Is there any other stuff that can be done this way? I'm looking for adding my account info there as my Chromecast has broken wifi and I can connect it only using an ethernet adapter. But I've reset it and now I'm stuck at setup and cannot add it to my google home app :

Hmmm, I'm not sure - I'm sure there is more stuff you can do, but I don't know of any myself. I think (but may be wrong) that it uses Bluetooth for the initial communication when setting up, so if that's broken too you may be knackered I'm afraid!

@@SwitchedOnNetwork I've actually forced it to work. I've forced the update and then added wifi connection using simmilar commands. All this while connected to ethernet. After update google home started to see it connected via ethernet and started configuration :)

Your Chromecast might have been assigned a new dynamic IP by your router after it restarted, so check in the app if its IP address is still the same. Sorry the update didn't work for you - it didn't work for me either!

ACTUAL UPDATE METHOD. "While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV, hold down the button on the side of the Chromecast. The LED will begin blinking orange. When the LED light turns white, release the button and the Chromecast will begin the reboot sequence." IT will update during the new setup. YOU'RE WELCOME.

THIS worked easily, and like a charm -- as my Chromecast was wonky and wasn't showing any details or options on my Home App (eg version) ... rebooted and updated and re-setup, and now my Chromecast works as good as new ⭐🏅👍

According to statcounter.com Windows currently has a 73.21% market share so it's a pretty sizeable majority of users. Just 16.54% use MacOS apparently (!). However, the video shouldn't be a "distraction" to non-Windows users as the same method can still be used. You can install PowerShell on MacOS by following these instructions: docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/scripting/install/installing-powershell-core-on-macos?view=powershell-7.1#installation-via-direct-download This is essentially just issuing a cURL command, which you can also do from the Terminal on MacOS. You probably already have curl installed but if not, here's how to check: idratherbewriting.com/learnapidoc/docapis_install_curl.html#install-curl-on-mac And of course the same applies via Ubuntu command line, too as it's Unix-based like MacOS. I'll certainly bear that in mind... it's a hard balance though, because you can never please everyone and if you include every single bit of extra info and scenario then you end up turning a short video into a long, waffly one which will have low audience retention and then get negatively affected by the KZfaq algorithm. when i look at what the google pages says about firmware versions... I wonder. Mine is not 1.44.XXXXXsomething but it's called 1.49.226077 ...huh... I just had insane flickering issues the last couple of weeks and decided to reset the darn thing on the button. It removed the flickering. But am still wondering about why my version is called this number. Well it for sure started the flickering AFTER that update earlier this month of september. So..more mmm! I am not on any review programme or what others mention. Gen 2 btw.

You might have a different hardware revision so the software versioning might be on a different branch system altogether?

@@SwitchedOnNetwork yeah maybe. I never found out what was wrong. I have to unplug the Cc and restart. Only way to stop the startup flickering. It is not a particular app related, not the chord or power brick and not the TV, I tested it all. How sad , another piece of electronic for the junkyard :(

I think there's a similar equivalent, careful though as if it's not a really new machine you might be stuck unable to upgrade apps etc to current versions afterwards, that happened to me once. Just another way that Apple like to screw people over so they have to buy brand new machines!

Built-in firewall within ROUTER is the culprit. Tried video solution on 2nd gen, didnt work. I was about to buy 3rd gen. Then i noticed something with my phone that directed to solution for Chromecast. My Samsung phone monthly patch firmware would always stop after few seconds and be stuck. So i tried to update firmware over data, it worked. I knew at that point, my ROUTER was the culprit. I reset my router, set it up without security, disable firewall and connect Chromecast using its open wifi, update worked like a charm. Once update done, set my router with password and firewall.

@@SwitchedOnNetwork my problem was this, everything was working perfect until last year i got a forced chromecast update by " google hands " i didnt want update it.. but i had to do it because GOOGLE DIDNT LET ME CHOOSE after that update, next day, problems started google chrome dissapeared, restore device... reconfig again.. sometimes appears, sometimes not, most of the time, chromecast is disabled i made it work many times doing many things, but always it failed again now i found the fix... and i wont give this for free, i dont want money, i just want the people say something to gooogle, because THEY DIDNT HEAR US and we payed money for this stupid device

It didnt work for me.
