My granddad was 84 Sqn aircrew (navigator) during WW2 on Mosquitos. I have his flying log and other memorabilia of his service. He always wanted to fly in a helicopter, but sadly the only time he did was when he suffered a heart attack on a Cumbrian fell side and was medivacked by 202 Sqn from RAF Boulmer in 1991.

Spent a few weeks on 84 Sqn to cover someone who was medivac'd. It was the Whirlwind when I was there. Good memories, especially at the Hovercraft and Canoe Club.

I am ex 84 squadron, (fixed wing Middle East), not quite the same historical past in WWII as relayed in squadron history when serving.

Had a quick detachment out there when I had to replace a medevac'd guy. Rather sunny with Whirlwinds, as I recall.

Still struggle to see why the Govt/MOD stood the SAR Sqdns operating out of RNAS Prestwick in Scotland and RAF Lossiemouth they did a great job and the shouts they went on can only have enhanced the training they already had.

Very interesting history, and current service as well. I watched from beginning to end, but I seemed to have missed the part that I was expecting from the title. They mention time and again that the 84 is the last SAR squadron in the RAF, but is there any part where they actually explain why?

Search and Rescue in the UK was made a civilian role and given to private companies a few years ago (Prince William left the military when it was privatised, but had been based at RAF Valley in Wales in a SaR function).

Interesting to see an RAF squadron operating Hueys.

awmperry they are clearly not hueys. This is a modern helicopter based on the huey

As you say, "Huey-derived airframe" would be strictly speaking more accurate, but that's a bit wordy for a KZfaq comment... It's still a Huey, even if it's not an Iroquois.

Looks to be a UH-1Y or an obscure version of a Bell-412. EDIT: Watched the video through and they are some version of a 412

It’s the same thing the Canadian army uses as there medium helicopter a derivative of the bell model 412 that in Canadian army use is called the CH-146 griffon I don’t know what it’s called in Britain

At 12:33 The sergeant has an empty knife sheath strapped to his right thigh . The sheath looks like that of a US Air Force pilot's survival knife . Maybe it was a similar looking sheath made in Britain ?
