HMS Rose and the race against time to protect the Revolutionary War wreck

More than a dozen cannons have been recovered from what is thought to be the wreck of British warship HMS Rose which sank in Savannah Harbour, Georgia 244 years ago.
Recovery of the cannons began almost three years ago by the US Army Corps of Engineers as part of dredging works.
Incredibly, the weapons were still loaded prompting a race against time to protect the artefacts after almost two and half centuries underwater.

This is an important site for both US and UK. The operations of HMS Rose of the coast of America caused the order to build the USN and HMS Constitution was one of these vessels - built to easily deal with frigates but be able to sail away from anything big enough to give them a problem. I have an interest because my family built HMS Rose at their shipyard on the river near Hull.

I am afraid the HMS Rose had nothing to do with the building of the "HMS" Constitution. The Rose was a much smaller ship and sank about 20 years before USS Constitution and her sister ships were constructed. The Constitution was armed with thirty-two 24 pounder cannons while the Rose apparently had twenty 9 pounders (although the video says 6 pound shot was found). The American ships were built to overwhelm the average British frigate of the time which carried guns firing 18 pound shot.

@@madthomm9648 Looks like my family history info was massaged by a family member in Australia in 1942 concerned that his UK relatives needed a more important past.

As an American we have a storied and linked history. Seeing it done any other way would be inappropriate. Rule Brittannia

HMS Rose was built at Kingston-upon-Hull, East Yorkshire, England. The modern replica of HMS Rose was procured by the film company and used as HMS Surprise in the film "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" (2003) starring Russell Crowe.

Darn, I wish I was able to work on that site, digging roman ditches is a back breaker and colonial maritime archaeology is very interesting 😅

The discovery is far more significant to US history than it is to the UK. For that reason I think it should stay in the US.

The Yanks better give us that stuff back or we should take immediate military action against the US and have a re-run of the civil war ( it wasn’t a war of independence ) 😂🥊

We built a mill in Hampshire made from the timbers of USS Chesapeake. So, its not all one way.
