Ford 1900 Tractor [Smokey Cold Start / Clearing Snow]

This is not my usual style of video. I was at my parents house in Ohio for Christmas and this is the tractor I grew up with. We were lucky to have the first blizzard of the season so my brother and I could have some fun clearing snow from the driveway. I have always loved older tractors especially diesel powered ones. We also used this tractor for mowing our fields, digging post holes, grating our gravel driveway, and any odd job in between. I only visit my childhood home about once a year now, so I thought I would share with you another interest of mine growing up.

I love the old ford tractors. The 1000 series didn’t even have glow plugs and they fire easier than any other Diesel

Eli Renigar Agreed. The old Ford compact tractors were and still are excellent machines. This one we owned never missed a beat, other than a dirty fuel filter years ago. After about 30 years of ownership, we finally traded her in for a JD 4105.

I remember these older Fords, when they started to come into our local dealer with these 'new engines ' . There was some opposition to those Japanese diesel engines at first, but Farmers and others, soon got used to the idea and bought them anyway. I guess folks were so used to the Ford diesel engines and it's hard to get used to new things. These engines proved that they could do the job and Ford Tractors stayed at or near the top of sales in our areas for many years to come.

+Reg Sparkes And further to your point, the engine on this tractor never had a problem except loss of power form a dirty fuel filter. Replaced and good as new.

Yep. Those diesels proved to be great and you still see a lot of them out there today with people holding onto them!

We have a 1910 and it’s amazing how good the old girl cold starts .... I used it to load salt for 15 yrs and it sat in an unheated barn and never once did it fail to start . Only change I made was 5w40full synthetic oil,and treat the diesel fuel with anti gel... it’s started at zero degrees . The trick is to glow longer and don’t stop cranking the engine until it picks up on 2 cylinders! I noticed you kept letting off the key when it would start to hit on one...keep on that key longer! We’ve never had to put a starter in ours so it must not be that bad for it...great video thank you for sharing.

John DiMartino Thanks for sharing your experience with the 1910. I don’t think these Japanese tractors got the credit they deserved in the 80’s. Not once did we have a problem except for a dirt fuel filter once upon a time. Sadly we no longer have her as we recently upgraded to a JD 4105. Was able to shoot one last cold start video this past December :) Good point on the 2 cylinder rule.

I checked out your JT8D sounds and that is a great upload. You have some very accurate characteristic sounds in that sound pack.

Thanks! I love most diesel machinery. Handling diesel is about as close to handling Jet-A as I can get haha but, burnt or unburnt it smells just as good. I thought the anatomy of a tractor would be a nice change up :)

great tractors,a bit surprised that it seemed like you could of let it warm up more before moving it! I have a1600 2 cylinder,1978 model purchased new March 1979 .1st one in my area.Somewhere between 7000-7500 hrs as tach has faded .Done just about everything you would expect and more

I have a coolant heater on my 1900. plug it in for an hour or two and glow plug it for 40 seconds she'll start at any temperature

@@LoveJT8D- Those Japanese engines are quite remarkable pieces of machinery. Particularly from this older generation without emission control add ons. ;-)

crpth1 No emissions are the best 😉. The engine on this one was literally indestructible. The only thing that slowed it down a long time ago was a dirty fuel filter. My dad recently traded it for a JD 4105, but is continuing a happy life with a new owner.

Try using a hair dryer or heat gun .. heat up the intake then suck warm air in air cleaner as you turn it over

Not a bad idea! This one does have a block heater so I'm sure that probably sends some heat up to the intake area. This time we just decided to see what the glow plugs were made of ;) Unfortunately we traded her in for a newer JD a couple years ago.

I think I'd add headlights to snowblower end so one could see what your backing up to.

There's actually a utility light mounted on the rear but, it's not operational at the moment. Agreed, it would be a big help.

I was just about to say that too! All my life since I was a child I have always been into tractors and heavy machinery. Also I am a big car enthusiast as well, but I think aviation stimulates my interests the most. Speaking of JT8D, have you seen my latest upload? The Flight Simulator sounds are finally finished and released.

i hold mine wide open get the glow plugs going then hold the starter to start starts first time,but be sure to catch it for a slow warm up 1979 ford 1900 thanks

i have a 79 1900 too and i think they are all bears to start when they are cold...lol

mine fires right up. dont like common oil reservoirs p.s trans.loader. loader tears up seals, all that dirt goes in trans power steering?? installed racing radiator, now it never gets hot, always wet under fuel cap, now keep filled all the way, shake to get air out, over fill rinse fuel cap w fuel if you see moisture, if you never adjusted valves do it now, then i think each 100hrs? very important..

joe shortt put wide open using hand throttle, get glow plugs hot,crank hold starter in,as soon as it fires cut throttle back to smooth idle for slow warm up.

You seem to know what you are doing!! How do you adjust the clutch on a 1947 8N?

look where the clutch pedal leads to the linkage to the bell housing if there isn`t an adjustment there and your clutch is slipping it needs to be changed and if ran like that too long the flywheel most likely needs to be resurfaced

I know real Ford engines will start at first try in -4°, if they are still in good shape. But this shibaura engine seems to have some more troubles, like Kubota engines

I wonder if one or more glow plugs is bad. My son has one and when he bought it the glow plugs were bad and it cranked forever above freezing. He replaced the glow plugs and it now starts as if it was summer

Hello im luke and have the same tractor but in a 1700 model. And was wondering if u know where i can order a new tach/speed guage. And also having hydraulic problems with my 3pt. Id like to contact you and talk more about this. Whats the best way to contact u by?

Luke Kibbe Hi Luke. Nice to meet another Ford owner. Admittedly I won’t be much help to you regarding the hydraulics. For the speed gauge, check out eBay and do a key word search with your tractor model. You’ll probably have some luck there.

Tokillya1 It’s dyed “premium” #2 diesel with anti-gel additives and cetane booster. Since the red designates ag use only, I think we’re good with the IRS haha 🙂

Depends on the depth of the snow, however this is a gravel driveway so not as easy to use the loader without moving a bunch of stone.

Yes this one had a block heater. Usually used it at sub-zero F temps. Ended up trading it in for a JD a few years ago. That Ford was real tough.

U need to get a blower that will go on the loader

Always wanted to try that however, on this tractor there is no PTO in the front. Not sure if there is an option for one.

Matt Adey Hi Matt, Thanks for watching. We didn't use ether. This tractor never needed ether because of glow plugs and a block heater. This time, we just used a blend diesel (#1 & #2) and glow plugs before starting. Seemed to work okay.

Nice machine. But you were moving so slow I started to get uncomfortable. And not cranking through during the cold start almost had me yelling.

is that what diesel fuel looks like?

+Peter Faust According to my internet seach, this diesel fuel is dyed red to indicate "non-taxed" for off-road use such as farm use. The fuel we use is also a blend of #1 and #2 diesel for easier starting in the winter. Diesel fuel that is clear is used primarily for road vehicles.

It's red for tax exempt and green for highway use
