I'm a retired earthwork contractor and remember these tractors when new. In my 20's I'd go down to the dealer and dream. I figured I needed an edge with no college so owning equipment gave me one. The engine and running gear was originally Ford blue with the hood and everything else a light yellow, the early industrial ones anyway . I started with a 1963 2000 industrial Ford that was gas.

Me too, (classic product of the 50's). Retired from ASARCO Silverbell about 10 years ago. I love my "toys." One of my favorites is my "old John Deere 3375 skid-steer." , Yanmar 3 cyl diesel and only 36 inches wide. Fill the fuel tank and add an operator it weighs only 2000 pounds. Boy toys. lol Thanks for watching

I love these old work horses. 6 forward gears and 2 in revers. 3 low 3 high no power steering so low gear was best for load and cornering. The one above is 4.

Do you have any more details on the leak you fixed that you thought could be accessed through the shifter top plate?

Nice tractor, I just acquired a Ford 480 which is identical to yours except it's got a permanent backhoe attached and no 3 point or PTO. Unfortunately mine has a few minor leaks here and there but nothing real major. Hard to find a lot of info on these mid range tractors. I've found that the front bucket hydraulic fluid is in the left side upright pillar that has a filter/ drain on the bottom with a round breather at the top of the pillar. Not exactly sure how to check or even add fluid for the bucket. The backhoe is supplied by the usual rear diff, but the front has it's own separate system. Any insight?

Thanks. I really like mine, but I like all tractors (and other boy toys). Leaks are a cheap fix, just takes a little time. Wish mine had a backhoe like yours but the loader portion of the tractor is sure a lot better than using a shovel. Thanks for the comment!

Ford was in its hay day back then. They're still the best used tractors to buy. Parts are cheap and plentiful, and there's a lot of interchangability between the models. Too bad new holland bought them out, just to get rid of Ford. Although india still has a license to manufacture those tractors, and they do. That's why parts are still available cheap.
