I agree wholeheartedly with you, and those were 90k miles of HARD WORK as well. It’s nice to finally see the face behind the voice on your videos. I am subscribed to over 160 KZfaq channels and your channel is the one I get the most excited to see. Always good content, always educational and always spot on. Thanks Arod, more mechanics should be like you. Corporate Ford should see these videos and offer you a job in diesel product development or that guy that gets these motors when they are returned to get dissected and analyzed for future improvements. If I was the CEO of Ford I would have people like you advising my engineers and making recommendations. Thanks again. And Ford if you are reading this take a hint, it’s blue shirts like this guy that really help to keep you on top.

I can say after being in the automotive field before myself the type of technician that ARod is, is the technician everyone hopes is working on their car. He currently is repairing my truck and I feel 💯💯 confident in the work being performed. 👊👊👊💯💯

I have a 2013 F350 Dually that I bought May 2016 with just 46k miles and she just rolled over to 403,000 miles, last week. I haul with my 48ft boat trailer and pull Campers/RV's all over. I'm going for the Million Mile Club myself. I change my oil frequently and use T6 Full Syn. Oil along with 1qt Lucas Black Label Treatment....Its been such a great motor. Its common sense to me, they are just like our bodies, the more maintenance you do to them and take care of it the longer it will last you! Great video 👍

And wow, what it fees to hear yours is at 403k. I can’t wait until I see those miles on my rig. Again well done!! Sup Aarod, great video sir, apologies for the 5 month delay on the comment, LOL. “All being work trucks.” Yup. When I had a fleet patrol car, nobody gave two sh*ts about the check engine light, oil change interval, etc. (except the fleet guys and they were destined for failure because nobody gave a damn). When I got my first take home unit, assigned to me and only me, I put my own spark plugs in it, did my own synth oil changes, pretty much did my own maintenance of my “personal” work vehicle. And you know what? I left that vehicle is such a good shape that my partner went out of his way to have that unit assigned to him when I was promoted. Big difference in mentality between “somebody else’s problem” and “my problem”. Good video!

the problem with most small fleets are the managers have no clue about maintaining a fleet, they get quotes and use the cheapest place, usually a jiffy lube type place and the mechanics have no clue diesel oil is different than gas engine oil, and i do agree with you this is probably a lack of oil changes it could be a oil pump failure, or a leaking oil pan/lack of lube. cutting the oil filter open will tell what failed first.

Being a mechanic and seeing much of this on a day to day basis I can't figure out why someone would spend a hundred grand on a truck and try to skimp on maintenance. No matter what engine oil and filter cost it will always be cheaper than a new engine. I stress that oil should be changed much sooner in a medium duty just because of the fact that it's a pickup engine and works much harder and at higher rpms than your pickup

Number one mistake people make when comes to maintenance, is following factory recommended intervals.
@joeymt3
@joeymt3 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct, the lab results say I should go beyond the factory recommended interval. Now on my 3.5 ecoboost the lab said 7k is Max which is quite a bit less than the 10k recommended. So you are correct in that you shouldn’t follow the OEM...follow the actual facts learned from doing the research.

We do fleet testing with black stone labs. Not only can you learn your actual service intervals, but you can catch catastrophic failures before they happen based on the trace metals. On top of that, we run Amsoil dual remote with bypass filters. There are some engines that run 20K miles on an interval, there are others that only run 5K. We tested all the major brands with the lab and it was absolutely worth the price. Thanks for the video! We've dealt with it because people don't care for things they don't own and aren't responsible for

That is very sad, I say read the owners manual, and if can’t read ask questions. I learned a lot by asking questions, and doing my own work. On my 7.3L and have 223,000 on my 97’ and it been the best truck I’ve ever owned. For the first 3 yrs I changed mine ever 2,500 miles long before I ever reached 200 hrs. And I know change it at ever 5,000 if not sooner. And the only thing I’ve had to fix on mine is power steering hose, ball joints, tie rod ends, brake booster, and a fuel lifter pump. And I’m wanting to get a new 6.7. And with as much as they cost these days, oil changes are more important than anything you do to them. God Bless you all, and thanks for the information your sharing with us, and for letting some that may not know what they need to do and keep up on. Cause this should not happen, costly.

Even proper maintenance is no guarantee. My 6.7 suffered a spun bearing and cracked crankshaft at 273k miles.. As a senior master Ford diesel tech, I have seen many engines fail, even with good maintenance. I got lucky and fixed mine with a new short block. There worst part was the upper oil pan. It was on backorder at the time and they are an absolute PITA to clean out properly. Lots of brake cleaner, a garden hose, and a couple hours of cleaning. I'll be installing a bypass filter setup soon. I plan to make a video when I install it. Along with a custom oil priming system of my own design. The cause of failure on my engine was a spun bearing. I'm not mad, shit happens. The #1 problem I seen constantly was idiots being cheap on oil changes and using 15w40 oil. The 6.7 does not like thick oil. 5w40 synthetic should be used after the first few oil changes or after 20k miles.

That's a nightmare scenario for me. Those are NOT cheap. I change the oil every 5,000mi. I don't idle mine so hitting 200hrs in 5,000mi would require me to drive incredibly slow. So slow I would expect to get a lot of tickets. I do oil every 5k, fuel filters every 10k, air filters (cabin/engine) every year, and I did spark plugs every 50k on my EcoBoost, not sure about glow plug life. I also do the transmission fluid and filter, transfer case fluid, differential fluid (front and rear), and both cooling systems every 50k. That worked for me on all of my previous vehicles, but they were all gasoline. Hoping it works here so long as I don't tow 15k every day all day.

I'm a 5000 mile kinda guy for oil changes on my 2005 6.0 Powerstroke but I think I know where the problem in this story got started. Powerstroke work trucks that belong to companies that also run big rigs, become victim to the oil change interval of the big rigs in the eyes of the vehicle maintenance people. It is not uncommon for fleet maintenance shops to change the oil at 25,000 miles in big rigs that holds 12 gallons of oil, have twin huge filters and operates at freeway speeds 90% of the time. Not such a good idea for medium duty trucks that spend a lot of time in stop and go traffic and idling around the jobsite on three gallons of oil, obviously.

I have a 2017 F250 that is a hot shot rig, that I purchased with 15K on it and two years later it has a little over 150K, and I pull a triple axle 48ft goose neck that is 9K empty every single week, so depending what vehicles Im running I sit around 23-25k. I change my oil every 10K with shell rotella and ford fuel filters every 20K, I also always get diesel at Loves or Pilot so I have the best chance of getting good quality diesel. I have the oil checked at Blackstone Labs every 50K and the samples I send in always have right around 10K to this day the lab tech always states I have at least 2500-3k left on my oil before it even starts to show any signs of needing to be changed. We have talked in depth about running synthetic and he said from all his samples all over the country from work trucks and individual vehicles no matter the brand....Cummins, Duramax, Powerstroke....plain old Shell Rotella has been the best and sees no reason to pay extra for synthetic. He also stated there may be a difference in extreme mileage between oils changes 20-25K however he has not seen it. I do not baby my truck but I do not abuse it either and I maintain it relgiously, I let the engine come up to proper running temp and never run it hard until it is fully up to temp. I have not had one single issue from day 1, not 1. I have owned 3 cummins trucks ( 07 5.9, 11 6.7, and a 16 6.7 ) the engines always run flawless however I had issues with transmissions and other electrical things. I ran a 16 Duramax LML for over 110K towing the same trailer for two years, same maintanance schedule, same oil....not a single issue but it def does not pull or the trans feel near as solid as the Ford. In my opinion the Ford has the best engine / trans combo out there, yes its much better than the L5P and allison 10 speed as a whole. I agree Cummins is the best engine however, the engine is only one piece of the puzzle...you have trans, emissions components, electrical.....even with the CP4.2 in the Ford I still believe it is the best. Most of my friends have new ram 3500 HO with the Aisin which seems to be pretty stout however it shifts like shit and is terrible to drive unloaded, lethargic power, detuned / sporatic shifts, no where near the power and confidence I have in my SuperDuty, yes the engine brake sucks compared to the cummins no doubt about it. Just my opinion but I have owned all three and towed heavy over 100K with all three and the Ford just stands above them all which going straight from one truck to another....and this is coming from a die hard Cummins guy.

I never comment but on this one I have too. My work truck is a 19 f350 with 6.7. It has 14k on it and never had an oil change. It drives me insane. The owner says its cheaper to keep the trucks for 3 or 4 years and do no maintenance and get rid of them than it is to do all the services on them. I feel sorry for the next person that buys those trucks.. In contrast I drive a 2003 f350 7.3 with 480k on it that I have maintained religiously and have had very few problems with. I`ve never worked on the newer diesels but I worked on all diesels until 1992. All of them had high capcity oil sumps, in the range of 11 gallons or so with large and sometimes multiple filters. Back in those days a n14 cummins made 444hp same as the 6.7 fords, Turn up the power turn down the engine life. I agree with you completely about maintenence, those little engines at that power level ( if I bought the truck) would get the oil changed at 3000/miles. oil is reletively cheap compaired to a new engine...........but what do I know?

Well, Fords recommend service intervals are extraction tactics in my opinion. Like the PTO's that have lifetime fluid. With a half a quart in them. I couldn't tell you have many PTO's I've replaced, 5.4 3v timing sets, and many engines gas and diesel, all because if neglect. Clean fluids will make your vehicle last... I think 5k is excessive on the oil change. That would be 3 to 5 weeks for me. I’m hooked to a trailer 95% of my miles at minimum and I change my oil between 11 and 13,000 miles. Ive done many oil analysis with Blackstone and 7000 miles was a waste of money and 10,000 miles was a waste of money and the sweet spot seems to be between 11 and 13 using Amsoil signature series. However, I agree that you should deny warranty on somebody that is going 15 to 20,000 miles or more.

Same here 80% of 6.7 I’ve done have been work trucks with locked up spun main bearings, the regular pick ups were only found during upper oil pan reseals. In the early years the work trucks were spitting rods out the side and curiously we started noticing turbos were replaced on damn near all of them weeks before if you get were I’m going. Anyways turbos don’t fail now like they used to and we don’t see rods making windows anymore lol

At 96k miles you should of change the oil 20 times and have use a marvel mistery oil additive (to keep your egr cooler running like a champ). Keep in mind that in every oil change you NEVER get 100% of the used oil out. about 8-10% stays inside the plumbing system and oil pump.

I've got a 2011 6.7 and I change my oil every 15k to 20k miles running t6 5w-40. 266k miles on it so far and 10k idle hours due to it being a mobile office for 5 years. I tow 18K roughly 4k miles a year and 4k-10k regularly. Oil analysis every time that has yet to indicate there is a problem and it's still running like a top and not losing oil between services. As for engine work done so far I "upgraded" a few annoying components at 17k miles and lost the turbo oil seals at 220k miles and swapped in a non-vgt but that's it. Maybe I got lucky and mine was built on a Wednesday but given the amount of towing I do with it for personal and work use I think proof is in the pudding that oil lasts much longer than people think.

Absolutely the exception. I see factory interval changes with high idle hours and lots of leaks on those that I don't see on the others with more miles. The gasoline engine vehicles with longer oil intervals have destroyed cam chain hardware and variable cam timing actuators (phasers) by 125K in many cases where 5K interval oil service on the same vehicles has no issues with double the miles.

Oil life is tripled or more on these with EGR “eliminated”. Got a used oil analysis on my 2011 with 10k on the oil. Report came back looking fantastic. Could go at least double that interval. Soot is the killer here on a stock engine.

I now I am the odd one out here. I have a 2014 v6 mustang. I change the oil at 50% oil life, (4,000mi approx). Castrol full synthetic with a fl500s filter. As DebossGarage once said "Oil is cheep insurance for your engine".

My 2011 now has 92k miles on it. I have had the dealer change the oil and do all the maintenance when the reminder comes on the message center, Usually around 7k to 7.5k miles. At anywhere between $150 to $200 bucks for a service, It’s hard to justify every 5k miles. Good thing it’s under warantee, I’ve had the fuel pump blow up, spun a bearing, (replaced with a new short block) and had the turbo replaced. Every time the oil sample checked out ok with plenty of miles left. So if indeed the problem is the oil change interval ford needs to fix the reminder display, recommend better oil or keep repairing. I’ve played by their rules and played by their book. What oil do you recommend then that won’t void ford warantee?

If you want to extend your oil change intervals than you better be getting your oil analyzed! Start at 5k to get the break-in oil out of there, and get a sample and see where you're viscosity is. If you're within range, you can maybe bump that up to 7,500 miles and then get another oil sample and go from there. My wife's 22 Navigator has the high output Ecoboost and at just over 5k miles her oil shows it's sheared to the next lower level from where it began. I believe I have heard that is a byproduct of the design of the piston rings, and doesn't have anything to do with the oil. It is afterall, a high performance, twin turbo motor so no worries, oil and filter are cheap compared to tearing down a motor and seeing wear on your bearings, etc.

I bought my new 250 a few weeks ago. Like many of my vehicles of the past this one will have a bible for all it’s oil and fuel info. I dont use her for work but she is my daily. I originally was planning on doing my oil changes at 6k. Considering I’m not doing severe duty that should suffice for my needs. Or at least I think it will.

Just listened to a podcast (diesel podcast) and I can send the link if you want. Interview with a shop owner. Gentleman mentioned using the factory recommended oil on the new diesels. He had a 6.7 in the shop with a spun bearing due to starting it in cold weather and the 15w40 he was using. Oil pump was too stiff and slowed the crank but the rods kept going. Interesting conversations with the pros.

I'd been wanting a diesel for some time now and just bought a 2015 Powerstroke. I'm very excited for a vehicle I can take care of and see through many work/personal projects and maintenence cycles. I made a list of the manufacturer recommendations and am in the process of making a chart to track every single thing I do. I was mechanically inclined since I was a kid but lost some of it over the years out of convenience/laziness. I'm ready to get back to being more self sufficient. Thanks for the awesome, informative, entertaining content and real-world skills you apply to personal and work trucks alike.

Yup. 5K KILOMETERS (3K miles) is the oil change interval on my 2016, with nothing but Mobil Delvac Synthetic 5W40 (changed up to 0W40 a few years ago) since new, that I'm about to unload for my forthcoming 2021. Fuel filters have been done every other oil change as well (6K miles). Hopefully the future new owner of my 2016 will be just as on top of doing oil changes to keep it going.

I work on powerstrokes for a living and I will say I contribute all of these issues to a few things. 1st I never had seen these issues b4 ck4 oil came out. 2nd people are lazy and ride the warranty, 3 the 6.7 uses tangles bearings for some reason, and 4 the main bearing oiling issues are very real as hp increases in the 6.7. Every truck that comes through my shop gets Schaeffers 9000 cj4 oil and Motorcraft filter. I recommend 250hrs or 7500 miles with that setup.

You are the world champ at 6.7 talk for sure. Who is the guy for the 7.3 Godzilla talk? I have been battling the choice between the 6.7 and the 7.3 gasser for a dang year now and still can't decide. Waiting on the right 2022 or 2023 to roll around. Diesel scares me to death with all the stories. I want the confidence to get in it and drive from N.C. to Wyoming and not worry about limp mode! LOL. Listening to you gives me a little more confidence in a diesel 6.7. If S&D made a 60-gallon gas tank I would probably decide on the 7.3 gas.

Every 5000 miles, it gets new oil and fuel filters. Fuel filters are cheap enough on line to do every oil change. I had water in fuel and the sensor didn’t come on, and drained about 4 oz of water out. Never again! Test fuel before I fill the tank, and drain the water separator once a month.

I always did a 5k mile interval on my 6.0 with t6 and motorcraft filter, and fuel filters every other oil change. I did first one on my 2020 at 3k miles; the light was at 40% and was about to drag 15,000lbs for 3,000 miles. I’ll continue the 5k oci and 10k fuel filters on this one as well. Any input on the bypass oil filtration systems? I am looking at installing the Amsoil unit. Not with intent to extend oil changes, but to attempt to reduce the soot load in the oil.

I just ordered a 2021 F250 and expect delivery April 13, plan on doing all the fluid services myself regularly and save the receipts of everything, if i show proof that i paid for the oil and filters do i still have a warranty on the engine. Also i plan on doing a 2.5inch leveling kit on my truck. Would that void the warranty on the entire truck or just the parts i messed with? And would you recommend doing a DPF delete on these new trucks (knowing that it voids the warranty.) Would love to 5inch exhaust the truck once the warranty runs out. THANKS!

It’s called penny wise and dollar dumb. I’m in the fleet services business and I argue with these fleet managers all the time. One fleet manager informed me that you never go by engine hours for PM services. He is in the propane delivery business and his trucks go 200 hours a month and only 1,500 miles. Yet when I informed him that he needs a service every month and he declines. He says their intervals are every 6 months or 7500 miles. Needless to say that company quit using me and now they are using a cheaper mechanic.
